Family Day For Young Marines

Future Marines being put through an exercise routine under the watchful eyes of GySgt Joe Clayton and his team of Marine Recruiters.

Photo of Guest Speaker Commandant Bob Beck being presented with the EGA Plaque

This well-organized event took place on Saturday, June 20, 2015, attracting a large crowd of staff and familymembers of all ages. The weather turned favorable, therefore, the first hour was devoted to a hard workoutwith some very unique coed exercises. There were team work movements, runs, stamina builders andtraditional fitness exercises.

After the workout, S/Sgt Jeremy Curcio formed a large group and gave very important and sage advice to all. These soon to be Marines have been well prepared for Boot Camp and life thereafter in the USMC. A veryadequate picnic style lunch was served and the beautiful facility proved to be very comfortable.

After lunch, Gy/Sgt Joseph Clayton spoke to the group. He commented that young Joey is still makingprogress and will undergo further testing in July for accurate diagnosis. He also presented information aboutour coming Golf Outing and distributed brochures.

Gunny Clayton informed me that he will be ending his recruiting tour this year and the leadership role will be taken up by S/Sgt Curcio – amost capable Marine. Gunny Clayton will be staying on at Picatinnny with Golf Company/225.

Membership Procedure

The Slattery Detachment #206 of the Marine Corps League is an organization of Marines, for Marines. TheDetachment is a place for Marines to visit, socialize, and participate in programs of interest.

The Detachment is developing a process designed to engage, orient, and introduce all potential membersinto our Detachment. As such, it is extremely important for all prospective members to be introduced to theDetachment in the following manner:

1. The prospective member must be referred to the Membership Chair in order to ensure thatproperly completed applications, membership fees, and other documentation is completed anddoes not get misplaced.2. The prospective member must complete a membership application.3. The prospective member must pay the membership fee.4. All prospective members must have a DD214 or other discharge document. A review of thedischarge papers by the Membership Chair or designee ensures that the applicant was in theMarine Corps and discharged honorably.5. After the potential member is accepted, the new member will be introduced to the Detachmentmembers at the next scheduled meeting.6. When the new member attends a meeting, he/she will receive a verbal introduction to theDetachment and areas in which the member might be of service.7. The new member will receive a letter welcoming him/her to the Detachment and letting themember know that his/her ideas are welcome.8. New members will receive an information sheet that describes Detachment meeting dates, times, and location. Detachment programs, names and phone numbers of Detachment Officers andproject leaders, and other information.9. Additional follow-up letters, calls, information and encouragement will be provided by theMembership Chair or designee.

We frequently see new members arrive and after a few meetings disappear. Their next step is a lapse inmembership. The major reason that happens is because they do not feel accepted. Therefore, we all mustmake an effort to ensure that new members, as well as existing members, feel confortable and acceptedby the Detachment.

70th ANNIVERSARY VJ Day

August 14th 1945

"America means freedom and there's no expression of freedom quite so sincere as music."

Major Glen Miller

Every one of us has those unforgettable moments that brush past our senses as if walkinginto an air conditioned room from a sticky humid summer day. They can instantly be called forth byany one of the five senses. The fleeting scent of recognizable instance, the glance of a familiaroccurrence or the sound of Glen Miller's "A String of Pearls." Suddenly, the radio announcer lowersthe tune. His voice ablaze with patriotism as he informs the listening audience "Japan hassurrendered, the war is over." It was victory over Japan, it was seventy years ago, it was a summerday August 14th 1945. Moreover, Pete, a thirteen year old "Southie" remembers that gloriousoccasion in the greatest of detail.

" We were all congregated out on the front steps of the apartment houses listening to theradio with our neighbors on 3rd street in South Boston, Massachusetts. Yes, back in those daysradio was how we received our news and listened to our favorite shows. All of sudden, it wasbroadcasted that Japan had surrender unconditionally! Within minutes 3rd street from I to K streetwas flooded with people. They just seem to pour out of their homes like a river. Mothers, wives, grandmothers, aunts, uncles, and the kids, all of them, just all of them were dancing in the streets. Ican remember hearing people shouting from the distance, 'The war is over, Japan surrenders.' Andthe noise, banging utensils against pots and pans like drums making as much a racket as possible.Even using car horns, and setting off leftover 4th of July firecrackers! We marched proudly up anddown 3rd street to Emmett street then by 2nd street and back up K & 3rd Street. Even though I didnot fully realize the magnitude of it, none of us would ever forget. It was a happy time for all and ahistorical date in history. Now the men and women serving our country would be coming home, especially my Uncle Tony from the Aleutians. I can still envision that cherished experience like itwas yesterday. It remains one of the highlights of my childhood."

Meanwhile, in N.Y.C.'s infamous Times Square, they were all "In The Mood," celebrating VJDay lining the avenues singing and dancing. A young staff photographer for LIFE magazine namedAlfred Eisenstaedt most likely heard this tune echoing loudly as he ran through the streets huntingfor the perfect image. In midst of the festivities, he begins to follow a captivating sailor. Almost in arhythmic joyous sway to Glen Miller's jitterbug beat, the sailor is grabbing any and every girl in sight. He picks up the pace with the combination sax and trombone sections, kissing her whether she wasa grandmother, daughter, plump, thin, or old. There is no distinction, just the thrill, the news, themoment. Along with him, Alfred keeps time searching for the exact moment to snap the photo. Asthe trumpet solo begins, he is running just steps ahead of him, dodging groups of merriment as ifavoiding oncoming traffic constantly with his camera over his shoulder. Suddenly, the music softens, their steps move in slow motion until the climactic explosive sound of the entire horn section. Thesailor grabs the white dress, as Alfred turns around and clicks the moment he kisses the nurse.History is made in four pictures. In that unforgettable embrace, he is every serviceman and she isevery gal who waited for her hero to return home safely. They celebrated and honored all branchesof the US military that day, and we have for seventy years and will forever more. For these bravemen and women heeded the call to serve their country so others may be free.

Trip to 8th & I on June 26, 2015

26 June 2015

Members, Family & Friends of the L/Cpl Robert J Slattery Detachment from Whippany, NJ attended theMarine Barracks, 8th&I Evening Parade in Washington, DC on this Friday night. We were guests ofCongressman Rodney Frelinghuysen who represents the 11th District in New Jersey.

Approximately 37 of us attended this event and some took a bus down and a few of us made the trip bycar. To name a few who attended were Detachment Commandant Bob Beck and his wife, formerDetachment Commandants, Pete Gallo, John Andrews and Keith Butler along with many others who makeour Detachment what it is today. We left New Jersey at 1230 on Friday afternoon and most of us got backhome by around 2-3AM. We were all invited by the Congressman for all the work we have done for manyyears helping and supporting the men and women and their families who have wounded in Iraq orAfghanistan. We have also helped those injured and even those with medical problems who are serving inall branches of our Military who have been serving our country since September 11, 2001. This is one ofthose events that I tell people they need to see at least once while visiting Washington, DC. Every Fridayevening in the summer, the Marines at the 8th & I Barracks put on the Evening Parade, a performancefeaturing the President’s Own U.S. Marine Band, the Commandant’s Own U.S. Marine Drum and BugleCorps, and the amazingly impressive Silent Drill Platoon. And always a crowd favorite, an appearance byChesty XIII, the Marine Corps’ English Bull Dog mascot.

Being an invited guest we were able to enjoy a cocktail party on the lawn of the Commandants house andget to meet many current Marines who are stationed at Marine Barracks. We were also were able to meetwith former Marines and those of the other Military services. The events starts at 2045 (military time),8:45pm and approximately 30 minutes prior to the parade Marines who are part of Marine Barracks willstand and talk in front of the crowd and inform them on the history and traditions of the Marine Barracks. They also talk about where they are from, what their job or MOS is and inject a little humor too. A veryProfessional and worthwhile event for all to see. The Marine Barracks is the "Oldest Post of the Corps," itwas established in 1801, and has performed military reviews and ceremonies since its founding. Thepresent-day Evening Parade was first conducted on July 5, 1957.

I have listed below the website for the Marine Barracks with all the pertinent information for any of youinterested in attending the Parade in the future. This is no charge to attend, but I recommend that you calland make reservations weeks out so you can be put on the list otherwise you will have to wait in line withthe general public. www.barracks.marines.mil/Parades/EveningParade.aspx

The Evening Parades are conducted on Fridays only beginning May 1 through Aug. 28, 2015. The starttimes are as follows: 8:45 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. There are pictures on our Detachment’s web site taken duringthe parade and I have listed the link below. www.oohrahsemperfi.net/archives/slattery/yr2015/rodney/

Again, a very impressive and worthwhile way to spend and evening. If you have never seen this Parade, Ihighly recommend that you make plans to do so, no matter what uniform you may have worn. It is an eventenjoyed by all ages young and old.

Semper Fi,

Eddie

PRESENTATION OF ART WORK

Tom Miller Detachment Artist on behalf of the Slattery Detachment presents the framed Eagle print toRodney P.Frelinghhuysen and the Iraq Afghanistan print to Deputy Commandant Glenn M. Walters

Trip to 8th & I on June 26, 2015

I was not sure what to expect at 8th & I so I went with an open mind and no preconceived expectations. Itturned out to be an extraordinary and noteworthy occasion.

Upon arriving by bus, we were met by several marines who then escorted us to the Commandants homewhere we were greeted by Deputy Commandant and Mrs. Glenn M. Walters, Rodney Frelinghuysen, aNew Jersey Congressman, and Pete Visclosky, an Indiana Congressman. We had the opportunity to viewthe Commandants home and then to enjoy the refreshments in the Garden.

Both Congressmen gave brief speeches. It was a proud moment for our Detachment when the MCmentioned our Detachment and then Rodney Frelinghuysen specifically introduced us. We wereconsidered V.I.P. Guests and treated as such.

Tom Miller brought his beautiful art work that he and Commandant Bob Beck presented to our New JerseyCongressman. Additional art works were left for the Sgt/Major of the Marine Corps and General JosephDunford, Commandant of the Marine Corps, who were not present.

Our Detachment members were escorted to special seats to view the Parade. It was spectacular. Itincluded the MC Band, Drum & Bugle Corps and the MC Silent Drill Team.

All and all a very exciting day and even the weather cooperated.

Gloria Beck
