Methodology

• Survey questions were administered through the TrendWatch Alberta Omnibus between March 28 and April 9, 2018.

• TrendWatch Alberta is a monthly omnibus survey of 900 Albertans, ages 18 and over. The margin of error for a probability sample of 900 people is plus or minus 3.3 percentage points, 19 times out of 20 (i.e., at a 95% confidence interval).

• Surveys were conducted using our “True Random Sample, Hybrid Delivery (TRS-HD)” methodology. This approach involves live telephone interviewers initially contacting respondents at random, and giving the respondents the option of answering the survey over telephone at that time, answering over the telephone at a more convenient time, or receiving the link and answering the survey on-line.

• The initial sample list contains approximately 50 percent landlines and 50 percent cellphones. Interviewers make up to five attempts to reach each phone number in the sample before classifying it as unreachable.

• All surveys were conducted by qualified interviewers working out of Trend Research’s centralized CATI facility in Edmonton. Field supervisors were present at all times to ensure accurate interviewing and recording of responses.

• The interviewing staff at Trend receives extensive training on the proper administration of interviews and are closely monitoredby supervisors. A minimum of 10 percent of each interviewer’s work was unobtrusively monitored for quality control in accordance with the standards set out by the Canadian Marketing Research and Intelligence Association (MRIA).

Should Calgary Bid on the 2026 Winter Olympics?

Ski Jumping Canada – Spring 2018 Omnibus Questions 4

Just over six in ten Albertans (62%) believe Calgary should bid on the 2026 Winter Olympics. Interestingly, Calgarians (55%) are less likely to think their city should bid on the Olympics than Edmontonians (68%) or those living in the rest of Alberta (62%).

Support for an Olympic bid is particularly high among young people (75% of those age 18 to 24 vs 49% of those age 65 and over), who are not old enough to remember the 1988 Olympics.

There has been a great deal of discussion lately about Calgary hosting another Winter Olympics. In your opinion, do you think Calgary should or should not bid on the 2026 Winter Olympics?

Interest in Holding Events in Other Cities

Ski Jumping Canada – Spring 2018 Omnibus Questions 5

When asked about the idea of having events hosted in Calgary and the surrounding area only, or having events in a number of cities in Western Canada, half of Albertans (50%) say they like the idea having events in only the Calgary area. Another 43 per cent like the idea of multiple locations in Western Canada, and seven per cent are unsure.

A majority of Edmontonians (57%) like the idea of a multi-city Olympics, which would include events in their city. However, most residents of Calgary (58%) and the rest of Alberta (55%) like the idea of a Calgary-only Olympics.

Looking specifically at the 62 per cent of Albertans who want Calgary to bid on the 2026 Winter Olympics, 55 per cent of them would like to see the Olympics in only the Calgary area, compared to 42 per cent who want a multi-city Olympics and seven per cent who are undecided.

It would appear that a multi-city approach may increase support for an Olympic bid among Edmontonians, but this approach could decrease support among Calgarians and those in the rest of Alberta.

If Calgary does win the 2026 Winter Olympics, would you prefer (ROTATTE) to have all events to take place in Calgary and the surrounding the area OR to have events happen in a number of different cities in Western

Canada, including Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver.

Location of Ski Jumping

Ski Jumping Canada – Spring 2018 Omnibus Questions 6

When asked specifically about ski jumping, and told that this event could either take place in Calgary or Vancouver, over three-quarters of Albertans (77%) say they would prefer to see this event held in Calgary. Interest in having ski jumping take place in Calgary is high across the province.

The preference to have ski jumping take place in Calgary is particularly high among:

• Those who think Calgary should bid on the 2026 Olympics (85%), and

• Those who think all events should happen in Calgary and the surrounding area only (89%).

Thinking specifically about ski jumping, if Calgary does win the 2026 Olympics, ski jumping could take place in either Calgary or Vancouver. Would you personally prefer to have ski jumping happen in …
