    Al-Azhar Park

The Aga Khan Trust for Culture appointed Sites International as the lead consultant to develop and de-

sign the final master plan, landscape architecture, selected architecture and site supervision/project man-

agement of Al Azhar Park. The 74–acre site is uniquely situated amidst the splendor of Old Cairo, atop

a 500 year old landfill and is defined along its western boundary by the 800 year old Ayyubid wall. The

design theme is derived from the contextual Islamic heritage of Old Cairo and the design intent is to pro-

vide green open space for the densely populated city. The master plan centers on a major pedestrian spine

that extends north–south, linking the topographically–varied landscape elements of the Park. Furniture

and lighting fixtures were custom designed by Sites International, using local artisans from a nearby

quarry district. Al Azhar Park, now a Cairo landmark, was instrumental in the development of environ-

mental awareness and a better understanding of the profession of landscape architecture in Egypt. The

Park’s diverse planting material is a valuable educational resource for botany and horticulture students.

Throughout the design process, Sites International was mindful of sustainable design issues. Native and

adaptive trees and shrubs were used to provide shade and heat relief and the irrigation system uses raw

water from the Nile. Al Azhar Park transformed one of the poorest, most populous and historically rich

parts of Cairo into a sustainable open space, stimulated social and economic development and generated

revenues exceeding operational and maintenance costs.

    Dubai Park

Sites International prepared the master plan, engineering and landscape architecture design for Dubai

Park. Located at major Dubai street intersections, the Park is intended as a passive recreational space for

the nearby office buildings and neighborhoods. Small pergolas provide a gateway entry to the park. Lush

planting around the park perimeter provides color throughout the year while the central lawn and water

features provide respite from the heat.

    Bab Qinnesrene Park

Bab Qinnesrine Park is a 32-acre park located near the historical district of Aleppo, facing the histori-

cal gate of Bab Qinnesrine. The site is characterized by its natural rolling topography that offers distant

views of the old city and of the famous historical Citadel of Aleppo. Sites International’s comprehensive

design includes large green open areas, playgrounds, small buildings and an attractive urban spine with

shops, cafes and plazas that act as an extension of the “souk” urban fabric of the old city.

    Al-Giza Park

The Giza Governorate invited Sites International to convert part of a former airport into a 38–acre park

for the densely populated district of Embaba. The design theme reflects Egypt’s major ecological zones:

Nile River, valley, oases and hills. The architecture of the park buildings evokes the rich and diverse

aesthetics of the different ecological zones through distinct vocabularies, motifs, building typologies,

materials and finishes. The Nile’s centrality to Egyptian life is represented by a stream that originates at

the visitors’ entrance and winds through the entire site, connecting all the park activities. The oasis oc-

cupies a secluded area, offering a peaceful zone covered with palm groves surrounding a central water

spring. Among the highlights of the park are boat rides, re–created agricultural fields and waterwheels.

Shams City - Central Park and Waterfront

Sites International transformed the initial schematic landscape design for Shams City to a fully devel-

oped design that is visually rich and diverse. The 305,000 m2 project is a mixed-use development of open

spaces, a major park, lakes, canals, restaurants, cafes, recreational and educational amenities that aims to

be the new heart and metropolitan center of Abu Dhabi. Among its features are an environmentally sound

boardwalk and observation point that border the protected mangrove area offering captivating views of

    Al-Seka Al-Beda Park

When the Governorate of Cairo embarked on a major greening effort for the capital, Sites International

was asked to lead several of their projects. Al Seka al-Beda Park is one of the endeavors located in a

heavily congested urban community. The 10-acre park features a children’s playground, service areas,

strategically-located pergolas surrounded by colorful groundcovers, major promenades and water fea-

tures connecting various areas of the park. The focus is a centrally-located sun dial. All walkways radiate

from it and all plazas and common spaces revolve around it. Selected for its aesthetic, historical, and

educational value, the sun dial also acts as a major water feature attraction. Other highlights include a

historical brick smoke stack, which was integrated into the park design and custom-designed, carved

stone furniture that serve as art displays where visitors can enjoy a quiet meal or just relax.

The J.W. Marriott Hotel is the central attraction of the Mirage City and Golf Course Project. Sites Interna-

tional designed the master plan, landscape architecture, architecture and engineering and took on site super-

vision and project management for all of Mirage City, including the JW Marriott Hotel. The hotel features

more than 430 rooms and suites, a grand presidential suite, five-star restaurants, function halls, a 1500-person

extravagant ballroom and elaborate water features. The hotel’s design was conceived and structured through

careful integration of the building mass within the site topography. The hotel’s uniquely curved and stepped

design and transparent facades provide rooms and public spaces with extensive, unobstructed views of the

golf course and Mirage City, while softening the physical presence of the hotel itself within the surrounding

landscape. Sunken cabanas, pools and tennis courts serve as outdoor recreational venues.

    Nabq Touristic Center

The Ministry of Tourism invited Sites International to prepare a master plan for a 2700-acre major tour-

istic center adjacent to the Nabq Conservation, located on the eastern coast of the Sinai Peninsula. Nabq

represents the Gulf of Aqaba’s largest coastal conservation and is a touristic magnet, with 600 km2 of

protected virgin landscape sheltering a variety of ecosystems. The diverse landscape features deserts,

mountains and valleys. The Tourist Center will be developed over two decades in four phases. The mas-

ter plan hosts a variety of hotels, chalets, apartment units, retail and recreational facilities, and services

to attract investors across the socioeconomic spectrum. Residential accommodations for the on-site labor

force were also incorporated in the plan. The master plan made use of the natural plateau of the land-

scape, keeping buildings inland in order to maximize panoramic views and access to the Gulf of Aqaba

and the two islands of Teran and Sanafeer. Streetscapes, plazas, ample green spaces and shaded trails are

located throughout the site. When the project is completed, over 25,000 hotel rooms will be available in

    The American University in Cairo

Sites International, working closely with multiple international and local firms, developed a master plan

and landscape design for the 260–acre New Cairo campus of this notable university. Sites International

played a key role in technical site coordination/site supervision. The design vision for the site is a tight-

ly–knit learning environment that encompasses indoor and outdoor spaces. The central spine serves as

the backbone of the campus, while geometrically–configured architectural features in the form of gate-

ways, plazas and courtyards, subtly introduce new spaces along the course of the spine. Sustainability

was central to all facets of the project. Every landscape decision was made with a limited irrigation water

budget in mind. Sites International created a catalogue of planting material used in their design for future

use by the community and in the classroom. The landscape as a whole is an environmental showcase for

the best of things Egyptian in an institution that uniquely brings together what is American and Egyptian.

New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD)

NYUAD is a comprehensive liberal arts campus scheduled to open in 2012. Sites International prepared

the landscape master plan and design guidelines with the intent of creating an oasis-like haven for stu-

dents and staff. The highly urbanized campus and extensive building land coverage posed a real land-

scape design challenge. Almost all landscaping is built on roofs, including parking garages, academic

buildings and student / staff housing. Extensive studies were conducted to respond to the extremely hot-

humid climate of Abu Dhabi. Native and adaptive plant species were selected. Hardscape materials with

minimum heat gain were specified. The design provides sheltered and shaded areas for students’ outdoor

use. Roof gardens play both an aesthetic role and minimize heat gain through the roofs of buildings.

    Nubian Museum

The Nubian Museum, recipient of the 2001 Aga Khan Award for Architecture, is a true illustration of land-

scape architecture that is sensitive to site topography and context. In the late 1980s, UNESCO sponsored

the establishment of a museum to display the history, culture and heritage of the Nubian people. The mu-

seum rests on a unique hilltop site overlooking the Nile River city of Aswan. Sites International’s design

concept centers on creating several themed outdoor display areas and includes a long stream representing

the Nile River as it flows through Egypt. The stream symbolically starts in the topographically rough land-

scape of ‘Upper Egypt’, descends through several cataract style waterfalls and ends in the ‘Lower Egypt

Valley’ with palm trees and greens of the Delta. The 43,000 m2 site contains numerous indigenous plants

spread over natural rocks. An amphitheater is carved out of the steep adjacent slopes. A small Nubian vil-

lage street brings Nubian culture and daily activities to life.

The rapidly expanding Egyptian population calls for moderately priced housing in well planned,

new communities outside metropolitan Cairo. Sites International designed the master plan for Beit

al Hana, a 145-acre, self- sufficient community that combines residential, retail and community

facilities in a green neighborhood. The project transformed an underutilized area into an active and

energized residential environment. Multiple open landscaped areas soften the potentially grid-like

feel of apartment buildings and roadways.

Cairo Festival City (CFC) is a 3 million m2 premier, mixed–use development that brings together

retail, dining, entertainment, hotels, luxury villas, apartment buildings, offices, schools and an au-

tomotive park in one self–contained city. Sites International updated the master plan, prepared the

detailed planning and landscape architecture for the entire site and was responsible for supervision/

project management. CFC’s network of formal and informal vehicular and pedestrian pathways

weave through the site, linking the residential and business districts, intimate parks, public squares

and the retail district. Oriana is the prime residential district in Cairo Festival City. Site International

designed neighborhoods reflecting Spanish, French and Italian themes. On completion, Oriana will

    accommodate around 13,000 residents.

The master plan capital izes on Cairo ’s un-met demand for adequate open space. The qual i ty, quant i ty, and var iety of New Cairo’s open space network are unparal le led.

The Central Park is the pr imary organiz ing element of the master plan. It is at the intersect ion of the community ’s four distr icts, and is the community ’s largest open space.

Connect ing the community together are l inear parks cal led, Wadis. These l inear open spaces range in width from 10 meters to 60 meters. A range of act ive and passive act iv i t ies wi l l be accommodated in the Wadis. In addit ion the Wadis can also act as swales for storm water runoff, detent ion, and f i l ter ing.

In the center of neighborhoods are modest neighborhood parks. These parks are usual ly located at the neighborhood entry, and provide a var iety of act iv i t ies within a short walk of every resident. Neighborhood parks are envis ioned to take on the indiv idual character of the surrounding neighborhood.

At the center of the three resident ia l v i l lages, and within the Central Park, are Distruct Hubs. The Distr ict Hubs are geared towards act ive recreat ion such as swimming, tennis, and kids play areas. These distr ict or iented recreat ion centers also offer spaces for smal l meet ings, neighborhood serving retai l , and smal l mosques.
