We must provide a safe, caring and respectful environment to promote high scholar achievement, academic excellence and emotional wellness.
Scholars should be challenged to become confident, self-directed, lifelong learners by creating high expectations for excellence in learning.

River Oaks Academy SMART Goals Provide a duty-free lunch period for every teacher on a daily basis. Provide duty-free instructional planning time for every teacher under G.S. 115C-105.27 and -301.1, with the goal of proving an
average of at least five hours of planning time per week, to the maximum extent that the safety and proper supervision of students may allow during regular student contact hours.

2014-2015 River Oaks Academy School Improvement Plan Reportcommunity. Our motto, “Empowering Scholars for Academic Excellence!” serves as a reminder to the school community that our goal is to ensure that our scholars are given the tools to meet with success wherever life may lead them. This is evidenced in the collaborative team efforts of our staff, PTA, and our commitment to establish business partnerships, as we provide scholars with optimal opportunities to excel academically, behaviorally, and socially in a learning environment that is reflective of the high expectations set by the adjoining groups.
ROA is a diverse Title I school, with approximately 650 scholars. We have an ethnic population of 70.6% African American, 16.6% Caucasian, 3.2% Asian, 10.4% Hispanic, and 3.2% multi-racial. Further, we have 5.2% of our students identified as LEP, 7.7% Exceptional, 1.8% Gifted, and 72+% ED.
In kindergarten, we have 5 classes, averaging 20 students each; first grade-5 classes averaging 22 students; second grade-5 classes, averaging 22 students; K-2 Multi-age-2 classes averaging 23 students; third grade-5 classes averaging 23 students; fourth grade-5 classes, averaging 24 students; and fifth grade-4 classes, averaging 25 students.
This school year begins with its scholars at 32.1% in Reading and 32.1% in Math based on 13-14 data, though that includes the 5th graders that have moved on to middle school.

Class size will be adjusted to address student individual instructional needs through flexible grouping of students in the most effective utilization of teaching teams. Maximum teaching load will be used to allow teachers in specific areas of the curriculum to teach students designated for specific skill needs and to address the large number of students requesting elective classes.
