• USF looks to snap a four-game losing streak and notch program victory No. 1,000 at home this weekend, where the Cougars (5-5, 2-4) will host the NSIC North’s top two teams, MSU-Moorhead and Northern State.

• Head coach Chris Johnson is 4-1 in the first games of the New Year. His first time ringing in the New Year with a loss came in 2013, a 71-62 defeat at Upper Iowa. • The Cougars’ strongest scoring signal remains from long-distance, as they are draining the NSIC’s second-most (42nd nationally) three-pointers per game, at 8.9 per contest. USF is fourth in the NSIC with 89 three-point field goals this season (Minnesota State, 111).

• The Dragons enter the weekend at 9-1 overall (5-1 NSIC) with their only league loss to date being a 70-69 setback at Northern State on Dec. 21. MSUM boasts the NSIC’s number one offense (36th in NCAA D2) at 86.9 points per game and are also the tops in the conference in scoring defense (64.4) and scoring margin (+22.5). The Dragons are ranked in the top-5 in every NSIC sta-tistical category except 3-point field goal defense (.333, 6th) and lead the league in 3-point field goal shooting, at 44-percent (92-for-209).

• Senior Derek Brown is tied for third in the NSIC in 3-point field goals made (22).

The University of Sioux Falls women’s basketball team suffered a 62-50 loss to MSU Moorhead Wednesday night in the first round of the NSIC/Sanford Health Women’s Basketball tournament. The Cougars, who shot at a 26 percent clip, struggled to find the back of the net early and never really got things going.

The defeat ends the Cougars season and gives them a 12-15 record in their first full season as a member of the NCAA DII and NSIC.

The two teams went back and forth early, and by the 12:38 mark of the first half the Cougars’ claimed their third lead of the game, 8-7, following a Bailey Bouman 3-pointer. However, that lead would be short-lived as the Dragons responded with four-straight points to take charge and closed the final eight minutes of the half with a 15-6 run to hold a 30-20 advantage at the break.

Laura Johnson was perfect (2-of-2) from the field with six points, which led USF, but her numbers were not indicative of the Cougars’ first half shooting. They shot 23 percent to score their lowest first half total of the season. USF hung around early in the second half, sizing up the home team to make their move. Trailing by eight at the 12:57 mark, the Cougars found offense. Back-to-back 3-point makes by Alyssa Rushton and Johnson cut USF’s deficit to two, 40-38, with 10:59 to play. Just when it appeared the Cougars had gained mo-mentum, MSU Moorhead would answer with a devasting 13-3 run, to make it 54-43 with 6:13 to play. USF would continue to fight, but six points is as close as they would get before dropping their second game against the Dragons this season. Johnson led all scorers with 19 points.

The University of Sioux Falls shot a season-low 35% tonight as they were unable to overcome a 20-point first half deficit en route to an ugly, 80-53 loss at Minnesota State University Moor-head Friday night. It was their largest defeat of the season. Senior forward David Maxwell was the lone Cougar in double figures tonight. He finished with 11 points and two assists.

A combination of turnovers and 61% shooting, 64% (7-of-11) from 3-point range by MSU Moorhead, made for a 20-point first half deficit for USF, which was their largest this season.

The Dragons converted eight USF first half turnovers into 15 points and never looked back. The Cougars entered the game averaging just 6.7 turnovers in the last three games.

Alex Novak led the way for MSU Moorhead, making his pres-ence felt down low with 14 points in the opening period alone. He led three Dragons in double figures with a game-high 18 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor and 8-of-9 at the line.

With the exception of the initial 30 seconds of the game, USF was chasing the home team the entire game. Near the 17:00 mark of the first half, the Dragons delivered a devastating 20-6 run that lasted nearly eight minutes, as the home team sank 8-of-10 shots from the field and went 4-of-4 of the line to claim their first big lead, going ahead 30-12 with 9:19 to play in the first half. The Cougars allowed a season-high 49 first half points and headed into the locker room facing their largest first half deficit of the season, trailing 49-29 at the break. USF posted their second-lowest second half total of the season, tallying 24 points in comparison to 31 by the home team. The Cougars couldn’t find the back of the net, shooting 28% in the final 20 minutes of play.

Cat Scratches • Northern State enters the weekend at 8-2 overall (4-2, NSIC) and opened the season with five straight victories, including a 96-88 win over Minnesota State Moorhead in their conference opener. The Wolves then lost two straight to Minot State and U-Mary before re-turning to their winning ways with three straight league victories. NSU has been led by Rachel Krogman and Alison Kusler who are averaging 16.0 and 15.0 points per game, respectively. Krogman is also pulling down a team-high 9.9 boards per game.

• Senior Alison Kusler is less than 30 points away from 1,000 with 971 total in her Northern State career.

• The Wolves are adept at taking care of the basketball, as they rank 19th in NCAAD2 at 1.19, which is also the 4th best ratio in the NSIC. Northern State is also tops in the nation in turnovers per game, recording an aver-age of just 11 hiccups per contest. USF hasn’t been as careful with its possessions; ranking 114th in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio at .85 and 44th in turnovers per game (14.9), which places them 13th in the league.

• Laura Johnson appears in the national rankings in seven different categories; free throw percentage (92.9, 10th) blocked shots (1.3, 92nd), double-doubles (4, 38th), points per game (14.6, 209th), rebounds (7.6, 187th), 3-pointers (2.2, 105th) & 3-point % (36.1, 115th)

• Jordan Stotts’ 34-point outing against Upper Iowa is the most points scored by a Cougar player since Jan. 11, 2011 (Eric Tisby, 37).

• The Cougars are 20-54 all-time against the Wolves. Their historic in-state rivalry dates back to 1927. • USF remains 11th in the NSIC in defensive rebounding (34.5 per contest), while the Wolves are 6th (31.8). • The final box from the USF-SMSU game on December 21 (a 63-51 Cougar loss) is noteworthy for the wrong reasons. Jordan Stotts and Cutler Finneman led the Cougars with nine points each, which stands as the first time in more than a decade that a USF player failed to score double-digits in a regular season contest. Prior to last Saturday, the last time USF didn’t finish a game with at least one double-digit scorer was December 19, 2003, where Chad Van Hill paced the Cougars with eight points in a narrow 49-46 loss at Valley City State University. The streak lasted for 318 games or 3,655 days/315,792,000 seconds. • The Wolves are coming off a thrilling buzzer-beating 70-69 win over MSU-Moorhead. NSU is tied atop the Northern Division along with the Dragons at 5-1 in NSIC play. Northern State is 8-0 when leading at halftime, 5-0 when scoring at least 80 points and a 7-0 at home.

Free throws proved to be the difference in the Cougars’ 54-48 loss to Northern State Saturday afternoon inside Wachs Arena in Aber-deen, S.D. The game was tied at 48 with 2:36 to play and Northern State closed it out from the stripe, going 6-for-8 in the final minute to secure its fourth-straight NSIC win.

Bailey Bouman led USF with 12 points and was 4-for-6 from beyond the arc. She has shot 61 percent (11-for-18) from three-point range in the Cougars’ last four games. Junior forward Laura Johnson chipped in 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Northern State was led by the tandem of Rachel Krogman and Al-lison Kusler, who combined to score 39 of the Wolves’ 54 points. Kusler finished with 21 points on 6-14 shooting (6-6 FT). Krogman finished with 18 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

After a Kusler layup made it 8-2 in favor of NSU, the Cougars rattled off 10 straight points to lead 12-8 with nine minutes remaining in the half. Bouman’s third trey gave USF the 21-16 advantage and Teagan Molden’s three with 2:33 left gave USF it’s largest lead of the game at 24-18. At that point, Northern State closed out the half on a 6-1 run to cut USF’s lead at the half to one point, 25-24.

After the break, NSU regained the lead 26-25 and the game would go back-and-forth until the final minutes. After two Johnson free throws tied it at 48, the Cougars missed their next three shot at-tempts. The Wolves hauled in every defensive rebound and went 6-for-8 from the line to create the final margin.

Sioux Falls played like a team with nothing to lose Wednesday night at Wachs Arena in Aberdeen, S.D. The seven seed from the NSIC South— the Cougars did all they could to pull off the upset against NSIC North No. 2 seed Northern State.

But when Robert Goffney’s three-point attempt fell short at the buzzer, so did USF’s hopes and its season ended with a 63-60 loss to the Wolves. USF ends the year with an overall record of 12-15 (8-15, NSIC). Goffney finished with a career-high 23 points on 6-for-13 shooting, including 11-12 from the free throw line. Senior David Maxwell chipped in 14 points and four rebounds. He finished his Cougar career with 989 points and 522 rebounds.

It was an intense game all-around, but the referees appeared to believe the teams perhaps took that effort too far—43 com-bined personal fouls, 27 of which were charged to the visiting Cougars. The Cougars forced six turnovers in the opening period and held the Wolves to just 16.7 percent (1-6) shooting from beyond the arc. On the strength of going 7-for-7 from the free throw line (vs. 9-for-16 for the Wolves), USF held a 33-30 advantage at the half. A different NSU team took the floor after the break, as the Wolves opened the second half with an 8-0 run to lead 38-33 with 16:37 to play. The Cougars led 46-42 but the Wolves followed with a 7-2 spurt to go in front, 48-47.

Holland tipped in a Derek Brown miss and the Wolves led 63-60 with nine seconds left. The Cougars had the ball in the right player’s hands with a chance to tie, but Goffney’s three-point attempt fell just short.
