Native American News

Dr. Denise Lajimodiere has been with NDSU since 2006. She

completed her schooling at University of North Dakota and

previously worked as school principals for Turtle Mountain

and in Newtown school systems. She has spent 21 years total

as a school principal. Currently, she is an Assistant Professor

of Educational Leadership and mainly teaches graduate

student courses for those interested in becoming school

principals.

Over the last four years, Dr. Lajimodiere has been researching

long-term effects of Native American boarding schools and

the intergenerational trauma committed by those boarding

schools. She is a part of the National Native American Boarding School Healing Co-

alition (N-NABS-HC). She is specifically liking the ‘NABS’ portion of the acronym

because the boarding schools would, literally, nab the children from their homelands

to be forced into the schools. The main goal of N-NABS-HC is to help in the healing

process across Indian Country along with helping elders break the silence of the cruel

abuse experienced in boarding schools.

When speaking with Dr. Lajimodiere, it was evident she was very passionate about

helping and staying current with the steps taken to help the healing process. She em-

phasized the importance of the work N-NABS-HC is doing, since the Canadian groups

are about 20 years ahead of the US tribes. When considering the acknowledgement

from government agencies and the churches, the Canadian nations have already been

received. Dr. Lajimodiere is currently working with Canadian groups in gaining the

recognition and apologies from churches and other organizations and also, currently

seeking Congressional an inquiry of the treatment of Natives for on the abuses and

atrocities committed by the boarding schools.

For more information on the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coa-

lition, contact Dr. Denise Lajimodiere in the NDSU School of Education:

student enrollment is also up, he stated,

“I’m pleased to note that among other

enrollment gains we have a 20 percent

increase in Native American students this

year.”

November 2013

Fund raiser ideas for the year — Yard sales (May 2014); Craft sale at Red Raven (No date specified); Hot cider and hot chocolate sale (Nov. 9 or 30th) – out doors!

Wild Mushroom Picking — I have a contact in MN who can help us in 2014 to get this activity done.

High School Plays— At the Sept. meeting they asked for infor-mation on high school plays that are going on in the area. From the list we compiled, they decided to attend “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” at the WF High School theater.

Mystery Holiday Workshop – Nov 23 at WF Fairgrounds 11:00 AM to 3 PM. They decided to create rock figurines. We will need some help on that day – parents!

2nd Horse Stable visit — I am checking to see if this can be done over the Thanksgiving Break.

Next 4H Meeting:

Date: Monday, Nov. 18; Time: 7 PM; Location: Agassiz Bldg.

Moorhead students — There are a number of Moorhead students who want to join but need a ride to the meetings. We are trying to figure out how to do this.

Fair Projects— The members are already discussing their projects for the 2014 Red River Valley and ND State Fairs.

Contact me if you want more information about 4H. 231-7314.
