Leggett & FDI Cash To Burn Victorious at Cloverdale RodeoBy Hope Sickler Kamloops, British Columbia cowgirl Julie Leggett didn’t have to travel very far to take home over $22,000.00, a pair of handmade spurs and the coveted Cloverdale Barrel Racing Championship in Surrey, British Columbia. Leggett and her 13-year-old home raised gelding, FDI Cash To Burn, a beautiful grey gelding that she affectionately calls “Ice”, car-ried her to the championship in Cloverdale. ““Ice” is by Judge Cash and out of a mare, Burn It Brownie, that I got when I was 13-years-old. She just passed away this past Febru-ary. She was a very special mare that not only I won a bunch on but my daughter as well. She ended up having a total of four foals but we sold two and one ended up dying so “Ice” is the only one that I have,” explained Leggett. Leggettandherhomegrowngeldingmadeasolidrunintheirfirstrun at Cloverdale, clocking a 16.61, good enough for third place. “HeissupersolidbutcansometimesgetbythefirstbarrelalittleandheendedupdoingthatinourfirstrunatCoverdale.Itwasn’tterriblebutIthinkitdefinitelycostussometime.”Knowing what she needed to be prepared for in their second run, Leggett and “Ice” cleaned up their pattern and made a beautiful run of 16.54, good enough for another third place. “Oursecondrunwasmuchbetter.Henailedthefirstandtriedhis tail off. He lost his front end coming into the third but kept running run through it and didn’t miss a beat. He is honestly such a hardworking, gritty horse. I cherish every run that I get to make on him,” said Leggett. With a day off to rest, Leggett had substantial time to think aboutwhatshewantedtogetdoneinthefinalroundonMonday.She knew that all she needed to do was make a nice solid run and “Ice” would take care of everything else. “With every run that he makes, he gets better, so I knew that Ineededtobeontopof mygameonMondayforthefinals.Heblastedinthereandhuntedthefirstbarrel.Itwasabeautifulturnand the two after that were just as good. We ended up being fast enough to win it which I am very happy and grateful for.” Leggett and “Ice” stopped the clock in their fastest run of the week witha16.195,whichwasgoodenoughforfirstplace,acheckfor$20,000.00 and a pair of spurs. “I actually won a pair of spurs at Cloverdale on “Ice’s” mother several years ago and so it made it extra special that he won me a pair here as well. I am going to cherish this moment forever and I am so grateful that her legend is living on through him.” As far as for the rest of the season, Leggett hopes to qualify for the Canadian Finals Rodeo again and make the best out of the runs that she gets to make on “Ice”. “We ended up 4th in the Canadian standings last year so we got a

berth into Calgary this year. I am very, very excited for this opportu-nity and cannot wait to see what we can get done there,” Leggett said.

4-Day Rodeo and Country Fair Brings In Big Crowds ItwasanexcitingMayLongWeekendastheCloverdaleRodeoand Country Fair celebrated its 69th year of world-class Rodeo ac-tion and 127th year of family fun entertainment at the Country Fair. Over85,000fairgoersattendedtheCountryFair,andover23,000rodeofansattendedthefiveRodeoperformances. With some of the best weather B.C. has seen all year and an enthusiastic rodeo crowd, the Rodeo performances saw some of the strongest crowds in decades. Even with the added seating, the Rodeo saw two back-to-back sell-outs for Saturday and Sunday afternoonperformances,andanearsold-outstadiumonMondayaswell. The 69th annual Cloverdale Rodeo showcased the world’s top cowboys and cowgirls at one of the world’s top ten rodeo events.

This year, the winners split over $325,000 in prize money. Jessy Davis walked away with the $20,000 First Place prize, domi-natingBarebackRidingallweekendandfinishingoff strongwithascoreof 89onMonday. Tyrell Larsen dominated the Saddle Bronc competition from start tofinishatthisyear’sCloverdaleRodeo,winning$20,000inthefinal. Kamloops native Julie Leggett rode to victory in the Ladies Bar-rel Racing with an impressive time of 16.195 seconds. The 2014 Cloverdale Rodeo Bull Riding champ Steve Woolsey onceagaintakesthegrandprizeof $44,000withascoreof 86.5.Hewillbegoinghomewithatotalof $46,800fortheweekendaswell as the title of 2015 Cloverdale Rodeo Bull Riding Champion.

By Tanya Randall Carman Pozzobon and her two Frenchs Hula Guy mares had a spectacular weekend in Cardston, Alberta, at the South Country Futurity & Derby. Pozzobon and Ripn Lady nearly swept the entire Futurity for $6,205, and aboard Eyes A Hula Lady (“French Fry”), Pozzobon earned reserve honors worth $3,537. She and French FryalsoswepttheOpenfor$1,842.Pozzobon’sweekendtotalwas$11,584. “I love that futurity,” said Pozzobon, a 29-year-old trainer and professional barrel racer from Savona, British Columbia, just west of Kamloops. “They’re like family there. They ended up getting $10,000 added this year. It was awesome to get that money added and the sponsors that helped with it.” In the Futurity, Pozzobon and Ripp, a 5-year-old, swept the two opening rounds, so Pozzobon thought it best to play it safe in the short round. “I was ahead pretty good, so I knew I just needed a clean run. In the short go, I just made sure they stood up,” she said. Ripp has a tendency to get tight running indoors, and Pozzobon even got to Cardston early to work the mare and “open up” her barrels. “I started her on barrels in November when I was in Arizona,” she said. “She took to it pretty quickly. She hadn’t been indoors until I got back to Canada. I took her to two futurities, I won one and was second at the Frozen. Then I took her to two pro rodeos, and she started tipping. She’ll be happy to get back outside.” Going into the Derby short go, Pozzobon had another strong lead, having won both opening rounds with the fastest times of the event—which also won the open races and open average with car-ryover times—with 7-year-old French Fry. “I’m pretty sure we would have won the Derby, but we ended up falling in the short go,” she said. “Her whole hind end went down (at the third barrel). For a split second, I thought ‘Do I need to get off?’ I knew I had to keep running to stay in the average. She was doing such a nice job, too.” Both Ripp and French Fry came from Keri Bloor. “I got French Fry when she was 4 and ran her as a futurity horse,” Pozzobon said, “and I liked French Fry so much I bought Ripp when she was 3.” Both mares are by Frenchs Hula Guy, a son of Frenchmans Guy out of a Dash Ta Fame mare. French Fry, whom she owns in partnership with David Harrison, is out of Powerful Cause, by Eyes Of Power. Ripp, whom she owns in partnership with Bruce White, is out of Bijou Betali, by Eli Betastreak. Although both mares have similar personalities, they have differ-

ent styles of turning, said Pozzobon. “One gets really low and runs around the barrels, and the other is straight up-and-down. Ripp runs really 4x4. (French Fry) runs around, but is a little more in-and-out. They have the same person-ality. They’re very aggressive and try really hard. They have a lot of heart,” she said. Immediately following the short round, Pozzobon loaded up and made a nine-hour drive to the Falkland, B.C., Stampede Rodeo, where she placed second on French Fry. Pozzobon is hoping to qualify for the Canadian National Finals Rodeo this year as well as win the Canadian Barrel Futurity title for Ripp. “We’ll see how it all works out,” she said. “I’m trying to get the Canadian Futurity Championship wrapped up for Ripp; it’s good for resale value. I usually just train them all and sell them, but I’m trying to hold on to a few so I can get some goals done.” Next up for both Ripp and French Fry is the Prairie Quarter Horse Breeders Futurity & Derby in Cadogan, Alberta. (At this event, they’ll make one run inside and one run out.) The following week, French Fry will see more action as Pozzobon starts her push

We had arranged for her to go to Craig Brooks after OKC where we had some other horses and he placed her in the 1st go of the Southern Rebel. She went on to run 1D to top of 2D times with him while she was getting ready for us to pick her up and bring her home to Canada. She has ran two futurities up here were she was 13th in 1st go, 2nd in 2nd go and 3rd in aver-age at the first one and at Blainville she was amazing, ending up 7th in 1st go, winning the 2nd round and average as well as getting 3rd in the Slot Race. She has limited earnings, so far over $10,000.perSonal hISTory: I started barrel racing in youth and open events in 1992 and started riding colts in 2009 and had a colt every year from then on. We started doing business with Craig Brooks from Georgia and have him train our colts when they are 3 and have him run them in the U.S. fu-turities and take over the reins in the summer months when our season gets underway. your runS: In the 1st go I just wanted to stay smooth and Barbie turned a good 1st and 3rd barrel but I got her a little wide coming into the 2nd barrel and she kind of pulled on me but still kept moving on and still clocked good enough to place and stay in contention. The 2nd go she warmed up great and she again had a good 1st barrel and drilled her 2nd barrel but kinda cut me off on the 3rd but her being a little small she came in out of position on her 3rd but still turned it good and she won the go round.BIT: We train and run her in the Jolene bit and may throw a tie down on her for training but not to run her. Have you ever held a belief that you arrived at through experience, and then bam! one day it was just blown out of the water? How did you feel about it? Did you recognize

that you were WWRROONNGG and change, or did you bull ahead and hold on to that way of doing things IN SPITE of the conse-quences? I can tell you, I have tried it both ways. Why I have to learn the hard way sometimes is a mystery. But honestly, I think it’s just pride and I don’t want to be embarrassed that I was sooo opinionated and WWRROONNGG. I remember one day about 35 years ago (amazing how some things just stick with you), I was sitting with a lady at a barrel race and she started telling me about how a horse needs to be in the proper lead to really get around a barrel. Hurrumph! Because I had a much more dominate personality, I tried to talk her out of it, and I did….…..Isn’t that just the dumbest thing? It embarrasses me just to write it down! What did I know about leads? Nothing! But pride had me argue with her because I didn’t know a thing about it. I just sent ole brown in there and they would turn (or not). Surely I knew everything…..NO….I….DID….NOT. Early on in my walk with the Lord, I started hearing about watch-ing what you say. You know, don’t say “you drive me crazy” or “that

scares me to death” or “I’m so broke I can’t pay attention”. The Bible tells us to call those things that be not as though they were. Romans 4:17. So I was calling things that were, like they always would be and I was getting nowhere. How dumb. So now, I practice not cursing myself or anyone else with my mouth. I use my words on purpose and speak blessing words. Like, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Phil. 4:13. “God supplies all my needs according to His riches in glory.” Phil. 4:19 and in I Pet. 2:24 “by Jesus stripes I am healed.” It’s a much better way. Just like leads. What a basic good thing to know. LOL! God’s Word will make a winner out of all of us. If He’s been dealing with you about changing something, like your temper, gossiping, your eating habits, your work ethic, whatever, just do it! You’ll be glad you did!
