Ing M.G.Spagno started his own business at 28 in 1961, soon after graduating in Mechanichal Engineering with AutomotiveConstruction Major, creating Contech, a small engineering consultancy company, focused on the study and design ofsealing elements for reciprocating and rotating machines, initially aimed mainly at non-lubricated applications.

Contech immediately established successful cooperations with all of the major OEM Manufacturers and numerous EndUsers, particularly in the compressor industry, which soon resulted in actual partnerships that still last today with mutualsatisfaction.

These partnerships allowed Contech to accumulate vast and important experiences concerning the problems related toreciprocating and rotating machines and their heavy duty employ.Soon after, Contech was asked by its customers to directly supply also the parts, beside their design and engineering.

During its activity, Contech has given an important contribution to the development of sealing technology and engineeringon the Italian market: from new designs to the introduction and diffusion of new breakthrough plastic-based lowfriction/wear materials, Contech was the very first company to introduce PTFE and polyimide resins in the manufacturingof sealing elements for reciprocating compressors on the Italian market.

More than 55 years on, Contech is still an independent family company, where the second generation is successfullyexpanding its core business and new ideas in the digital era, facing new challenges and supporting its customers in highlycompetitive and demanding markets, true to the core values and that have made it successful over the years.

Packing rings ensure gas sealingalong the piston rod, avoiding gasleakage from the cylinder to thecrankcase.

Contech can supply the mostcommon type of packing rings in awide range of materials, and alsohigh performance special rings forthe most demanding applications,such as the production of LDPE - LowDensity PolyEthylene, whereoperating pressure vary between1200 and 3500+ bar.

For these kind of severe applicationson Hyper-Compressors, whereusually the traditional sealing set upswith piston rings and rider bands arereplaced by special piston-rods andspecial packing cases, we supplyspecially designed packing rings,manufactured in high performing,low frictional bronzes.

OIL SCRAPER &

SEALING RINGS

Oil scraper rings are speciallydesigned to scrape oil in excess fromthe rod and to evacuate it throughthe draining channels, delimiting theareas interested by the lubricationand separating them from thepumping areas (cylinders).

These elements prevent oil leakagesand are very important to bothoptimize the oil consumption of themachine (thus the maintainance andrunning costs) and, in some specificapplications for safety and/orenvironmental reasons, where thecontact between lubricant andprocessed gas must be avoided.

Materials are usually metallic-basedbronze, aluminium, cast iron, whitemetal (Babbitt) - with the possibilityto specify hybrid set-up designs, aswell as plastic special materials forparticular applications.

Traditional packing rings aredesigned to ensure the correct gassealing mainly when the compressoris running, but their sealing efficacyrapidly decreases when the machineis stopped, allowing gas leakagealong the piston rod.Static rod seals solutions in ourproduct range are designed toguarantee gas sealing along the rodwhen the compressor is not inoperation, they are specified whenprocessing toxic and highly expensivegases, and as a general rule, for allthe applications where it ismandatory to eliminate gas leakage,as requested by plants' andenvironmental guidelines.

Packing cases are composed bymetallic cups containing the rodsealing rings. Piston rings, installed in groovesmachined on the piston, will ensurethe correct gas sealing between thepiston and the cylinder/liner,maximizing the performance of themachine.These components can bemanufactured in one or more pieces,in different materials - with standardor special design - and can be alsoconfigured as multi-elementalmultimaterial sealing solution.

Choosing the correct combinationwill allow the achievement of longdurations of the sealing elements,which can in turn lead to significantsavings on energy and maintenancecosts.
