From the President and the Executive Director

Our families achieved significant accomplishments this year. All four of our current resident adults are currently employed in full-time jobs that provide benefits. With support from our career counseling coach, one of those residents completed the necessary training and certification exam to obtain a full-time position as a certified

medical assistant, her chosen career. One family moved from Sinai House into a home they purchased in a neighborhood in which the family feels they can live safely. Executive Director Sadija A. Smiley has taken steps to increase the coherence of our services and the coordination among our service providers. In July 2018, she convened a full-day

retreat with Sinai House’s President and the entire team of consultants, which yielded a new motto – “Journey to Independence” – and a game-plan for improving communication and better integrating the consultants’ work. During each quarter of the year, the consultants emphasized one of our four major goals. In the first quarter, the consultants all focused on education; then mental health and well-being; financial matters; and job seeking and employment. Each consultant has either presented or brought in a presenter during their themed quarter’s focus at one of the residents’ monthly community meetings. Throughout the year, the consultants work with each resident one-on-one, as well as facilitating group discussions, which build community and enable peer support.

Personalized Case Management Executive Director Sadija A. Smiley works with each mother to develop a plan that focuses on the mother’s career and educational development, the educational and emotional development of her children, and mental health support for each family member where needed. She regularly meets with the families and confers with our professional service providers to continuously assess the progress of each family member and adjust their plans accordingly. She is a recipient of both the 2019 Prince George’s County Social Innovation Fund Forty Under 40 and The Leadership Center for Excellence 2019 Forty Under 40 awards! Mental Health & Well-Being Many of our families have experienced trauma in their lives, including trauma the adult residents suffered as children. The goal of the therapy we offer to the adults is to help each mother function as a single, independent person and to transition to life without the Sinai House program support. Our child therapist assesses every child who arrives at Sinai House, helps our staff monitor each child’s emotional progress, and provides therapy, when appropriate.

Financial Education We expanded our program beyond our traditional focus on the critical skills of budgeting, saving and improving credit scores, to include training on the importance of obtaining wills and life insurance to safeguard our families’ long-term financial security. In the past year, a team of pro bono attorneys – Temple Sinai members - prepared medical and general powers of attorney for our adult residents and a Certified Financial Education Instructor joined our team of consultants. Most

residents succeed in leaving Sinai House with about $5,000 in savings through the Tricia Davis Matching Savings Program, which requires them to set aside a specific amount each month, which we match on at least a 2:1 basis.

Career Development Our career development program trains the residents to assess their interests and abilities, develop job-related networks, discover job opportunities, prepare for interviews, and maintain commendable performance once they land a job. This year, we added a crucial component to the program, securing funding for tuition-assistance to help our residents obtain training and certifications to advance their careers. In addition to working individually with the residents, our consultant, Darren Cox, Director of Employer Services at the University of Maryland University College, teamed with So Others May Eat’s (SOME’s) Center for Employment Training to sponsor a job fair attended by employers, including Office of Personnel Management (OPM), R & D Computers International, Fastenal and uVision Software. Recruitment events were also held throughout the year.

Parenting Three of our four current adult residents are young mothers, who requested guidance in parenting their pre-school children. Chastity Lewis, an educational psychologist, led the parents through a “Parenting Journey,” a structured, 12-session, evidence-based program designed to help the mothers develop their skills and enhance their self-confidence in raising their children. We plan to continue the sessions in Fall 2019 and add group parent-child outings.

Keeping Connected to Our Past Residents

Since its founding, in 1992 by Temple Sinai members, Sinai House has served 45 families and more than 90 children. It's always a joyous occasion when our former resident families join the families of our current residents and families of the Sinai House Board at our annual Holiday Party. There is no longer room to host the party at Sinai House. This past

December the party was held at the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy. We are working to maintain consistent contact with our program participants, to track their progress and determine their needs after they complete their residency. To address this need, we recently acquired software that will enable us to computerize and better access, analyze and utilize data on our past, present and future residents. We also secured the services of a VISTA AmeriCorps member for a year, whose primary responsibility will be to input our data, locate our alumni and develop a survey instrument to collect the information we need to more systematically evaluate our program.

Our Backyard Transformation

Scott Taft, one of our playtime volunteers, is a landscape architect who, on his own initiative, designed a complex of playground equipment, gardens and patios to make the backyard a vibrant gathering place. Eagle Scout Daniel Rosentover volunteered to engage his troop and their families to install the equipment and vegetation to turn landscape architect’s vision into a reality for our families. Our residents now enjoy gardening, playing and relaxing in our reconditioned space.

Other Green News

The solar panels that were installed on our two buildings in 2016 saved approximately 7700 KwH from July 2018 thru June 2019. According to government standards, this saved: • Greenhouse gas emissions

from 1.2 passenger vehicles driven one year.

• CO2 emissions from 615 gallons of gasoline consumed.

• Carbon sequestered by 6.4 acres of U.S. forests for one year.

Our Volunteer Community Members of our all-volunteer Board of Directors attend bi-monthly meetings, help plan programs, write grants, and serve on our Building and Community Outreach committees.

Tutors meet with elementary and middle school-aged children weekly and work on math, reading, science and language arts.

Playtime facilitators come to Sinai House weekly to play board games, walk to the park, or watch movies with resident children. Mentors spend time one-on-one with a child once or twice a month to go to a basketball game or engage in another shared interest. Enrichment Activities: Throughout the year, volunteers from Temple Sinai engage our children in fun activities, including baseball games, festivals, and camping trips. Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church’s Missionary Ministry donates Share Food Packages and Thanksgiving baskets and invited our residents to their Harvest Fest.

Fifth Annual Tricia Davis 5K Walk/Run for Sinai House

Rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the 150 runners, walkers and dogs who braved the elements to celebrate Mother’s Day at the 5th Annual Tricia Davis 5K Walk/Run for Sinai House on May 12, 2019 at Rock Creek Park. Personal trainer Errick McAdams warmed up our bodies and revved

up our enthusiasm. Moms were presented with roses at the finish line. All of our hardy participants and volunteers enjoyed Bullfrog bagels, Mars fruit & nut bars, bananas from Whole Foods and bottled water from the Van Ness Giant Food. JDBaker Photography took the fabulous photos.

Thank you to the more than 300 generous business and individual donors and over 300 registrants who contributed more than $116,000 to support Sinai House!

Fundraising Sinai House depends on the support of its generous donors and does not receive any government funds. In our fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2019, about a quarter of our revenue came from foundation grants, about one fifth came from individual donations throughout the year and 40% came from the donations, business sponsorship and registrations fees for the 2019 Tricia Davis 5K Walk/Run for Sinai House.
