    Introduction

This document is a guide to Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance Simulator setup and initial

configuration. The Simulator introduces you to the power and simplicity of the

Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance software using VirtualBox and is identical in every way

to the appliance version, with the exception of clustering.

    VirtualBox Setup

Complete the following steps to set up VirtualBox with the Oracle ZFS Storage

    Appliance Simulator.

    1. Download the latest VirtualBox image and extension pack version that is

compatible with your operating system and install it according to the

instructions on http://www.virtualbox.org. The earliest supported version ofVirtualBox is 4.2.12, with its extension pack.

    2. Download and decompress the latest Oracle ZFS Storage Simulator from the

    Oracle Technical Network, http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-

    storage/sun-unified-storage/downloads/sun-simulator-1368816.html.

Note: The Simulator is configured with 2560 MB of memory and 125 GB of dynamically

allocated disk space. Please ensure that your host system has sufficient resources

(memory, disk space) to support this configuration.

    3. Start VirtualBox and select Import Appliance from the File menu. Choose thesimulator OVF file and complete the steps in the VirtualBox Appliance Import

    Settings wizard.

Note: The Simulators default configuration uses a Host-only Network. If the virtual

machine does not already have a Host-only Adapter defined, go to Main Menu >

Preferences > Network and click on the plus icon to add an adapter to the Host-only

    Networks.

    4. Select the Oracle VM labeled Oracle_ZFS_Storage and start the VM. The boot

screen appears. When prompted, press any key to begin configuration.

    5. The configuration screen appears.

    6. Use the Arrow Keys on your keyboard to navigate among the fields on this

screen. Many of these fields should be filled in for you. Here are some tips if you

are unsure how to fill in any of the required fields:

Host Name: Any name you want.

    DNS Domain: localdomain

Default Router: The same as the IP address, but put 1as the final octet.

DNS Server: The same as the IP address, but put 1as the final octet.

    Password: Whatever you want.

    7. After you enter this information, wait until the screen provides you with two

URLs to use for subsequent configuration and administration: one with an IP

address and one with the hostname you specified. Direct a web browser to the

URL with the IP address (for example, https://192.168.56.101:215/) to complete

the appliance configuration. The login name is rootand the password is the one

you entered in the initial configuration screen.

    8. Press the ESCkey followed by the 1key to finish with these settings.

    Advanced Networking Setup

When first installed, the Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance Simulator can only be accessed

from the computer on which it is running. You can enable access to the Simulator from

other machines on your network using the following steps.

    1. Configure Network Adapter 1 so that it is attached to the Bridged Adapter. Refer

to the VirtualBox documentation for detailed information aboutbridged networking

and limitations for your operating system.

    2. From the Simulator BUI, use the Configuration > Network screen to configure the IP

address, netmask and gateway that are appropriate for your external network

connection. Networking can also be configured through the Simulators CLI. Refer

to the Simulator online help for detailed information about network configuration.

    3. From the Simulator BUI, use the Configuration > Services screen to configure DNS,

Name Services and NTP. You can also configure services through the Simulators

CLI. Refer to the Simulator online help for detailed information about service

    Preparing for Remote Replication

To prepare for remote replication between two simulators, assign a unique appliance

serial number to each simulator by performing the following steps. This procedure

only needs to be performed once because all settings are retained, even when

powering on and off the simulators.

    1. Create two appliance simulators as described in section VirtualBox Setup, but

create a different host name and IP address for the second simulator in the

    configuration screen (step 6).

    2. Complete initial configuration of both simulators as described in section

Configuring the Simulator. Do not log out of the second simulator when finished.

    3. On the second simulator, navigate to Maintenance > System, click FACTORY RESET

    and confirm your action.

    4. When prompted in the VirtualBox boot screen, press any key to begin

    configuration.

    5. Complete all required fields marked with an asterisk (*). Be sure to enter the

correct host name and IP address for the second simulator.

    6. Now press the ESC key, followed by pressing the 1 key to finish with these

    settings.

    7. Direct a web browser to the URL with the IP address of the second simulator, and

log in. The simulator Welcome screen appears.

    8. Click STARTand repeat the setup procedure.
