Classes from six primary schools in the Ellesmere Port environs attended performances of a play based on the folk tale “The Pied Piper” at Action transport Theatre. Subsequently each school chose a folk tale from a pre prepared short list. The director and I then visited the schools, spending three days in each. During the first day the children took part in various drama activities, concentrating on reading and writing scenes based on folk tales. On the second day I set up a temporary recording environment in the class room and over the remaining two days recorded the children reading their chosen folk tale. It was organised so that each child had at least one line to read (depending on the choice of story and number of children in the class). I also recorded the children making sound effects to support the story. I then edited the six stories to produce a series of radio style recitations. I also wrote and performed a series of short musical pieces appropriate for each story as intros and outros. I then compiled these into an audio CD, which I produced copies of for each school, and for Ellesmere Port library. The stories were premiered at the library as part of an initiative to encourage the children to go to the library. I also did the graphic design for the CD case and inlays.

In addition to the usual stage management functions I also wrote lyrics and co-wrote the music to a song inspired by one of the stories in the play. I played guitar accompaniment to the song live during the performance. After the final performance of the play I set up a temporary recording environment at the director’s house and recorded the performance as a radio play to be broadcast on hospital radio and to be used in various staff training activities. I edited this recording to produce CD versions for distribution. I also did the graphic design for the publicity poster/flyer, producing print ready copy.
