I came across a couple of free maga- zines recently. One, Car & Driver, Jan 2018 issue, had an interesting article on some new automobile technologies coming our way. One of ‘em is a new shock absorber that adjusts its rebound rate at a fantastic rate in nanoseconds. Kinda like the very expensive shocks that come with pricey Cadillacs and Corvettes. Only these are supposed to be cheap. What’s not to like about that? Other technologies include a new internal combustion engine that ignites fuel without a spark plug. And its not a diesel. It keeps the fuel/air ratio in the ul- timate sweet spot for efficient power and emissions. And there’s a new LED head- light design that turns the light beams as the car turns by illuminating bulbs that would be otherwise be dark. No moving parts. And from Bosch, a new fuel-in- jection system for boosted engines is coming. It utilizes water injection to keep the charge cool, increasing power and lowering emissions. Another mag, Automobile, Decem- ber 2017, (Hey! Free mags are often old mags!) came to me from a car guy buddy. There’s an article about a special edition Challenger. These are in 2-tone paint, black with blue, or Billet Silver or Pitch Black. There will be only 80 editions of these specials made, and beyond custom touches like emblems and a shaker hood, but they are all 392 Challengers. Anyhoo, the writer drives the car, a 6-speed manual, over a long distance journey and absolutely raved about its pow- er, cornering ability, and comfort . He quotes an industry analyst who says of the 10 year old design, “It’s hard to say a bad thing about Mopar. They’re just damn good at what they do.” Which brings me to vintage cars. My ‘67 Cuda, namely. It seems my 50 year old headliner has finally fallen apart. So, I called Legendary, Classic Industries, Year 1, all the places for a correct headliner. Nobody had it in my color, Medium Copper. It was recom- mended by them that I contact their source, SMS Auto Fabrics to get one in correct color and fabric. So, I did. They tell me they have what I need, takes a month, and the price is $275+shipping. I give ‘em may card number. My account gets billed 2 weeks later for 300 bucks. A week later, another 50. Hey, All Clubmembers! The Twentieth anniversary of our All-American Car Show will be here shortly, on Saturday July 21. We have volunteers signed up for parking/traffic control, working the raffle table, and vendors committed to attend with their displays. What is needed is for all 140 Clubmembers to commit, too, by volun-teering, contributing $20 or so to our prize fund, and/or especially to enter the show. If you’re out of town, or if you just don’t want to display your ride, that’s ok! But please enter anyway! Your raffle contribution and entry fee goes to support USO, Homefront, Warrior Foundation Freedom Station, and Wounded Warrior Homes. Last year we gave $2500 to each of those charities. We’d like to double that this year, but we can’t do it without your help. So clip the form at right and please enter!

And since Ralph lives downtown in a high-rise condo, storing the car with space to work on it was an issue. So Ralph rented a small single car garage in Clairemont, and he began the task of getting the car safe and reliable. First off, Ralph is quick to credit Clubmember Jack Henton for his advice and manual labor. Among the many items attended to include new extra heavy-duty rear leaf springs to replace the worn out units, new electrical wiring, a new exhaust from Ed Hanson, a good 904 Torque-Flite transmis-sion to re-place the thrashed 727, and new tires. The rear sheetmet-al around the trunk was straight-ened, as well as the front right fender. At the interior, Ralph, installed new Leg-endary front bucket seat covers and vinyl dye on the rear seat, new front door panels, painted the door sills, installed a good used instru-ment cluster with a 150 mph speedome-ter, a Grant steering wheel knock off in good shape, a cover over the cracked dash pad, and installed a new am/

Clubmember Ralph Vagnone has nothing against vintage cars that are restored to a shiny, like new condition. In fact, Ralph owns such a vehicle, his ‘70 Plymouth Scamp that he tirelessly took from one foot in the junkyard to pristine condition (see PentaGram, Dec 2014 ). Ralph has been a car guy since his early teenage years, inspired by classic car movies like Bullitt, The California Kid, and Two Lane Blacktop. He became a Mopar Man with Vanishing Point. And when those movies were still fresh in the theaters, older kids that Ralph knew were inspired to build their own machines. Most were more go than show, as their owners did what they could with ten year old cars to start with and built them for speed rather than looks. But they drove ‘em hard. Decades later on Craigslist, Ralph came across this ‘68 Barracuda that its then teenage owner hopped up and drove hard for twelve years, and then parked it for the last forty. The Cuda looked rough, dented, scratched and dirty. Its original 318 c.i. V-8 had been swapped out for a 360. The steel factory wheels dumped in favor of slotted aluminum wheels. It had a non-factory Bumble Bee stripe, or at least its owner’s interpretation of it, on its tail. To Ralph, it looked like

sion, and converting the front drum brakes to disks. As for the rough ap-pearance? Well, that’s what attracted Ralph to the Cuda in the first place. It shows that its previous high school owner drove it hard. And that’s just the way Ralph intends to drive it, too.

Clubmember Ralph Vagnone remembers the young rodders of the ‘70’s doing what they could to increase their street machines’ performance. Ralph remem-bers that they got their cars going faster, but often their cars were lacking for looks. Ralph came across this ‘68 Plymouth Barracuda and its modifications & condition took Ralph back to that time. Ralph is bringing the Cuda to a safe and reliable state, but he’s going to keep it looking pretty much just as he bought it.
