People Profi le

Chris Gordon, developer of The Village Coconut Island, reveals how a childhood Christmas gift launched a life of sailing that took him from Portsmouth, England, to the world's most exotic places before he dropped anchor on a stunning patch of paradise off Phuket.

Chris Gordon

When did you move to Phuket, and what made you decide to come and live here? It was gradual, it just sort of happened. I fi rst came to Thailand in 1980 with the British national sailing team for a race in Sattahip, Pattaya. I fell in love with the food and culture, and returned in 1986 after I had launched Sunsail yacht charter in Greece. I took a speedboat around Phuket and thought, 'Why not?' I was young and careless. Soon after, I set up the second branch of Sunsail in the area that is now Yacht Haven Marina. I moved here permanently in 2005.

What did you do before you came to Phuket? I've been involved with boats since the age of seven, after my grandfather gave me an optimist boat he had built himself. I soon got into racing and that led to work as an instructor. I set up six boats for charter on the beach in Chichester Harbour before opening Sunsail on the Mediterranean.

Tell us about your current project, The Village Coconut Island. By 2001 I was ready for something diff erent. I was becoming a 'suit', so I sold Sunsail and got into property development. My fi rst project in Khao Lak was wiped out in the tsunami. Not long after, I met a guy in the Watermark restaurant who told me he had sold 85 rai of land on Coconut Island (Koh Maphrao) but the buyer had pulled out of the deal at the last minute. Within 24 hours I bought the land, and soon developed it into The Village Coconut Island. Phase two is now underway and will be fi nished this October. To the existing 44 villas, we're adding 116 jacuzzi suites and 76 two-bedroom villas, plus new restaurants, bars, a golf course, a conference/event room, bowling lawns and other leisure facilities.

How does doing business in Phuket compare to back home? I did business in 25 countries before settling here and have found that every culture has its challenges. You have to learn about a place – don't go charging in assuming you know best. Treat people with respect. Every day is a challenge but I always enjoy getting up to face it.

Whereabouts do you live in Phuket and what determined your choice of location? I rent a converted shophouse in Old Phuket Town. I didn't want to live in expat land. I like living amongst the Thai people, seeing all the weird and wonderful shophouse dwellers, and going to the cafés and bars scattered amongst them. I like that it's still got its old Chinese pharmacy and a motorbike repair shop that only does Lambrettas, and that you can have a nice meal for 100 baht..

What kind of car do you drive? Why? I drive a clapped-out Toyota Fortuner. It's the best car for the island. Practical and safe, and you can see what's happening around you.

How old are you? Mentally, mid-30s. Physically, 57.

Do you have family here? I am separated, but I have a good relationship with my wife, who lives in England. She has a boyfriend and I live here with

my Thai girlfriend. I have four sons, aged 17 to 24, who are all in England. My 22-year-old son just fi nished university and is planning to move here soon.

What do you think the future holds for you? After fi nishing the expansion of The Village Coconut Island in October, I hope to have more time to enjoy my boat. I'm sure I will start a new project next year, maybe in Phuket or elsewhere in Thailand. No matter where I do the project though, my life is here in Phuket. This is my home.

How do you evaluate success? At this age, success is having four healthy, well-adjusted kids. Also, seeing my project evolve into what I had spent nights dreaming it would be. I can walk around this place and feel proud at what I've achieved...

What are you most proud of? To date, Sunsail. I started out as a 20-year-old with no money and built it into the biggest and most profi table sailing and water sports company in the world.

What do you do with your free time, if you have any? My free time is taken up with boating and golf at Blue Canyon. I'm about to go to Bali to do some sailing around there, maybe to Lombok and Flores, and fi nish in Singapore for the Grand Prix.

Are you involved in any local charities, clubs or associations? I'm the founder and chairman of Khao Lak Community Appeal, a foundation set up in memory of friends lost in the tsunami. We raise money to help build and maintain schools, employ teachers and sponsor children whose parents died in the wave. I also support the Phuket Has Been Good to Us foundation with donations of free stays at The Village, etc.

RACHA ISLANDSRacha Yai lies 10 miles to the south of Phuket, with Racha Noi a few miles further. In local dialect they are often pronounced, and often written, as ‘Raya’, so don’t be confused. (Racha means ‘king’, yai is ‘big’, and noi means ‘small’).

The Racha is a 5-star resort in the North West Bay of Racha Yai which is the fi rst development of its kind on the island. There are also a few bungalows and restaurants on Racha Yai, concentrated near the north of the island.

Longtail day trip boats make the journey to these islands from Phuket, and beach umbrellas are set up in anticipation. Excellent diving, snorkelling, and fi shing are to be found all around this group.

RACHA YAI BAY14 miles from Ao Chalong

A

This is one of the real tropical paradises of the area. A fi ne white sand beach is framed by a bay fringed on both sides with coral. The clear waters are a vivid aquamarine tending to turquoise. Most of the shallower part of the bay now has moorings and the only anchorage opportunity is in 10-15 metres on sand and calcifi ed coral in the outer bay. Sandy patches do exist closer in, but care must be taken to avoid damaging the reef or fouling your anchor.

The Racha Resort has installed a high season fl oating jetty in the southern corner where they run their boat operations from.

The diving and snorkelling are excellent. The beach is frequented every day by dive boats and day trippers so, if you have crew leaving, opportunities for transportation back to Phuket are many.

The evenings are peaceful after the day-trip boats have departed, making this a delightful night anchorage, following a spectacular sunset in this west facing bay. There are several walking tracks to other beaches and across the island. Dive tanks can be fi lled on the beach.

RACHA YAI EAST14 miles from Ao Chalong

B

During the southwest monsoon, the east coast of Koh Racha Yai lends shelter for overnight stops in all but the strongest conditions. There is a deep water anchorage in 10-20 metres on a broken coral and sandy bottom. A few day dive boat moorings are available but are mostly too shallow for keelboats.

It also affords access to two small beaches with excellent snorkelling and diving, although sometimes there are strong currents. A pleasant, easy 20-minute walk takes you through coconut plantations to the north and west beaches. Ashore is the Ban Raya resort.

RACHA NOI WEST21 miles from Ao Chalong

C

This is a good lunch destination from Koh Racha Yai in the northeast monsoon. Look for a deep water anchorage in 10-20 metres close to the small gap in the island; passage through this gap in a dinghy should only be attempted at high tide. There is good diving and snorkelling along the shores on a mainly rocky bottom. Fishing, trolling and bottom, are good.

RACHA NOI EAST23 miles from Ao Chalong

D

This anchorage in 15-20 metres is similar to that off Koh Racha Noi West. It makes a convenient daytime lunch stop during the southwest monsoon. The swimming, diving and snorkelling are great, with the added attraction of a sandy beach connected to a small rocky islet. Please take a garbage bag if you visit the beach as much fl otsam and jetsam collect here.

prosperity and plenitude, while yellow noodles symbolise the desire for longevity. Beautiful fruit carvings of animal fi gures and decorations of fl owers with candles, are off ered and incense is burned. An important and attractive feature is the off ering of cakes made in the form of turtles – they come in all sizes. Originally they were made from semolina fl our, and had a distinctive red dot on the shell. The turtle is a symbol representing long life, and the colour red, of course, is very auspicious for the Chinese.

You really shouldn’t miss the opportunity to observe this celebration. It off ers a unique insight into the cultural richness of the island’s past traditions. It's celebrated at the Por Tor Kong Shrine in Bang Neaw district, in the central area of Phuket town, on the road leading to the Saphan Hin mining monument (see Streets of Phuket, P95 B1). Stalls are set up featuring local games like darts, shooting galleries and a fi shing game which is great fun for all ages. There’s a huge plastic tub fi lled with water and live goldfi sh and the idea is to try to catch the fi sh with a paper sieve. It’s harder than it sounds. Any fi sh you catch you can take home, but if you tear the paper and the fi sh escapes, then it’s 'game over', and somebody else gets to play. These games often off er prizes of stuff ed animals and the like. They are, in the local view, a form of merit-

making in themselves. Temporary shops sell souvenirs and with all this focus on food there's plenty of it on off er – including those delicious and lucky turtle cakes!

The shrine itself is beautifully decorated and plays are staged depicting the events on which the celebration is based.

This really is an event that encapsulates the fascinating cultural inheritance of the Phuket people.

Originally they worked as tin miners in what is now the Cherng Talay area of the island. It was upon this industry that Phuket’s prosperity was originally built. Over the years, the Chinese and local cultures blended to create an exceptional fusion represented by Sino-Portuguese architecture, unique cuisine and distinctive dress and cultural traditions, which were then passed on from one generation to the next. Out of this melting pot of beliefs came new forms of traditional Chinese observances. One conspicuous example is the merit-making tradition (this means performing charitable acts for the purpose of spiritual enlightenment and self enhancement) called the Por Tor Festival.

The festival is celebrated in the seventh Chinese lunar month which approximates to August or September in the western calendar. The Chinese believed that at this time the gates of Hades were opened so that the spirits of their ancestors could return to their former, earthly homes for a visit. This is contrary to Thai animist beliefs which normally class spirits as portents of bad luck. However, on this occasion the event is characterised as auspicious. Por Tor Kong (who is also known as the Gwan Yin Goddess) is one of those responsible for releasing the spirits and shepherding them back to Hades, after the end of their visit. During the festival each clan worships its own ancestors, making merit to show their gratitude for the contribution they made to the development of the present-day community. At this time children are admonished not to leave home after 6pm – it’s regarded as bad luck.

Special off erings of food are made to appease the hungry ancestors. Dishes of steamed pork, duck and chicken represent the wish for

Many of the early settlers in Phuket were of Chinese descent. They were Fujian Chinese and became known here by their Thai name, Hokkian Chinese. They arrived from Singapore, Penang and mainland China itself.

Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Place over low heat, shaking frequently, until any remaining moisture evaporates – about 1 minute. Meanwhile, in a small pan over low heat, heat the cream and using a potato masher or the back of a wooden spoon, mash the potatoes. They should be smooth without being overworked. Add butter and almost all of the cream mixture and salt and pepper to taste, then mix until combined. Taste and, if desired, add additional butter and/or cream mixture. Serve immediately.

ServingThe dish should be made from selected good products and best quality beef tenderloin. Finish the dish with fresh herbs and topped with sauce a smooth taste, aroma of red wine and serve. A glass of LITTLE YERING Pinot Noir red wine would be a perfect match

The Siam Supper Club International

The Siam Supper Club is defi nitely an icon!! It screams the word. There are few places in the world that provoke such a sense of time and place.

The venue is a long bar and grill that has become synonymous with the cool of a bygone age still leaving it's sophisticated imprint. It's cool... in the same way scotch on the rocks is cool. Beautiful... no glorious jazz fi lling the few empty spaces. One of the most interesting collections of sepia black and whites remain true to this same time and place.

When one is at The Siam Supper Club, one has to give up the mantle of tourist or visitor and for a brief time assume the rank of resident or... Phuketian. For when you're at The Siam Supper Club you are well and truly placed in a subtley lit and timbered comfort zone where a cocktail is still a cocktail damn it, the wines are big and the fabulous food reminds you of how things used to be. Ah! The tropics!

Big wines. Fabulous food. Great music.

The Royal Spa and Health Club

In the heart of bustling Phuket Town lies a quiet haven of heavenly peace. With the continuous sounds of water, trickling, bubbling and steaming, and with the sweet fruity scents that fi ll the air, the being is enticed into a fl owing stillness of body and mind.

The Royal Spa and Health Club is a popular tropical day spa with both locals and visitors alike, which is managed by the Royal Spa Development and Management Company. With an excellent reputation in the spa development industry through its experience and attention to detail, the Royal Spa and Health Club off ers a distinctly personal experience.

Of the signature treatments, the Royal Stone Therapy is one that is particularly interesting. The Hot Stone massage technique, founded 5000 years ago, uses black volcanic stones, which are heated and placed on the body, producing a profound eff ect, stilling the mind and easing the body.

Unlike many of the high-end spa complexes on the island, which market themselves exclusively to tourists, the reasonable prices and relaxed but professional staff at the Royal Spa, means that many local Thais, as well as tourists, are beginning to use the spa. This has helped to erase the often stiff , and over-formal atmosphere at many of Phuket’s spa resorts, giving the Royal Spa an ambience of authentic relaxation and pleasure.

All the therapists working at the Royal Spa have been trained at the in-house 'Phuket Spa Academy', established in 2004, to provide a comprehensive spa training course. The curriculum and assessments provide a measurement of therapist expertise and knowledge within the Thai spa industry. Since then, the Royal Spa Development and Management Company have provided comprehensive and professional spa management, and development programs, for spa retreats throughout Thailand. Their aim is to provide a standard of service and expertise throughout the Thai spa industry, to ensure a high quality of service and standard of treatment, throughout Thailand. It truly off ers the ‘one stop services for Thai spa business’ and a quality of relaxed professionalism, rarely found in luxury spa resorts.

Right now The Royal Spa have 12 branches that are managed in resorts in Patong, Kata, Karon, Panwa, Ao Chalong and Phuket Town and you are welcome to experience our spas with us anytime. As a special for our 8th year anniversary, we off er 'BUY ONE GET ONE FREE' value.

Sukko means "Beyond Happiness". My fi rst feeling when I stepped through the impressive gates of the Sukko spa was, "I’m in paradise". The Sukko staff are dressed beautifully in traditional Thai style and the spa design, infl uenced by the ancient Siamese capital, creates a haven of calm yet regal serenity. I felt I had left all my troubles behind.

Chilled out by the soothing background music, my mind was fi lled with a peaceful wellbeing as I enjoyed the warm traditional welcome (again from Sukko culture) of the ‘Flower Floating Ritual’ – similar to ‘Loy Kratong’, where the idea is to fl oat away past stresses and wish for luck and joy from that moment on.

A variety of 40 spa treatments – prepared by Sukko's certifi ed Thai Herbalist and based on ancient Thai medical theory – is off ered at Sukko, in packages lasting from 2 hours to 4 hours. Each package has a specifi c purpose and can be selected to suit your lifestyle or the way you feel on the day. These herbal recipes and procedures have been handed down through generations and are totally free of petrochemicals, synthetic perfumes or colouring. Some of the herbs and spices are grown in Sukko’s own herb garden and picked just for your treatment, ensuring they are as fresh as can be.

I was pampered with the ‘All-Soother’ package, a 2 1/2 hour experience that left me feeling relaxed and refreshed. This four-treatment combination began with 30 minutes in the steam room and the Jacuzzi, followed by a Thai Turmeric Body Scrub designed to soften your skin and awaken your senses. The scrub was followed by a traditional Thai massage, the pressure applied gently but fi rmly. "Is this pressure okay? Too strong? How are you feeling?" my therapist asked me from time to time. “Mmm… perfect…” were the only responses that seemed to suit how I felt. My last step, which came all too soon, was the Thai Herb Purifying Facial Treatment, using creams and herbs that left my face feeling smooth and glowing – and even looked good enough to eat!

Bobby Duchowny studied aromatherapy – a healing art that promotes massage, when combined with specifi c herb and spice oils, as a method to reduce stress, boost energy and heal certain physical ailments – at the American Aromatherapy Association.

Some years ago while on holiday in Thailand, he visited an organic farm in Petchaboon province and became interested in the natural healing properties of Thai herbs and spices.

“I was particularly attracted to lemon grass as it was used in many popular Thai foods, as a medicine for stomach disorders and even as a repellent for mosquitoes,” he recalls.

Bobby used lemon grass as his signature herb to create a line of essential oils, face and body creams, shower gels and bath crystals, which he and his wife Palita sold at Bangkok’s world-famous Weekend Market.

What started, several years ago, as a modest enterprise has blossomed into a successful operation off ering over 90 oils and a wide range of body care products through many outlets, as well as supplying many of Thailand’s top resorts and spas with aromatherapy oils.

“Our advantage is that we produce the freshest spa products and our stock is never kept longer than three months; using fresh spa products can be likened to eating fresh food rather than processed food.”

Lemongrass HouseTo visit this home of award-winning spa oils, creams, soaps and so many other exquisite products is a delight. The aromas are enchanting. At Lemongrass, you can enjoy a spa treatment to sample and choose from their huge range, then take home your choice to enjoy at your leisure. They even have a great range of kid’s spa products.

Based on his years of experiences at some of the top spas in Southeast Asia, Bobby has developed a full line of healthy skin care products. For example, his hydrating face and body creams have 25 per cent aloe vera, white orchid and cucumber extracts. And he’s developed a revitalizing mineral muscle soak made from Andaman Sea salt crystals, blended with white orchid and chamomile extracts, to help draw out impurities and soothe and revive tense muscles.

“People are sensitive to diff erent scents at diff erent times of day. It’s a good idea to get a variety of essential oils and experiment with what smells and feels good to you,” he says. “Our aromatherapy massage and body oils can be either uplifting or calming to the spirit. They’re carefully balanced hand-blended oils created by adding pure essential oils to nourishing, vitamin E enriched, sweet almond and jojoba base oils.

Lemongrass has won many awards, including Condé Nast Hot List 2007, and has been featured in several top magazines, including Time Magazine’s “Best of Asia”. According to Time, “If you want to smell like no one else, try mixing a selection from the more than 90 natural scents at Lemongrass House.”

Lemongrass House is located in Cherngtalay, Surin Beach and Chalong, where you can buy their full range of spa products at modest prices, making perfect gifts for friends and family who can enjoy the aromatic scents of Asia in the privacy of their homes – no matter where in the world they live.

LEGAL DIFFERENCES BETWEEN A CONDOMINIUM PROJECTAND AN APARTMENT PROJECT IN THAILAND

In Thailand the distinction between a condominium and an apartment is a legality in nature. A condominium project may look almost identical in every way to an apartment project but what defi nes whether or not it is classed as a condominium is whether it has been registered with the Thai authorities as a condominium according to the Thai Condominium Act. In order to register as a condominium, an application will have been made for this designation which may involve more documents and paperwork needing to be fi led in the pre-construction phase than would be the case if the project is to consist of apartments rather than condominiums. Additionally, there should be disclosure that the building will be a condominium building on either the Environmental Impact Assessment (“EIA”) documentation (required for condominium projects with 80 rooms or more or with a usable area of 4,000 square metres or more) or the Initial Environmental Evaluation (“IEE”). Once the construction of a condominium project is fi nished, or all but fi nished, an application is made to register the project as a condominium which will involve the submission of a number of legal and other documents to the authorities. For a condominium project the law also provides procedures for the common parts to be owned collectively by all owners and for owners to have a say in how the project is managed. For an apartment project there is no ability in law for a foreigner to own “freehold” nor is there any mechanism in law providing owners with common ownership of the common areas or a stake in the management. Contractually, however, this issue can be overcome in Apartment projects. For this reason, in an apartment project you should check carefully how ownership and maintenance of the common parts is dealt with and ensure that you are provided with suffi cient rights in the purchase contracts. The Condominium Act defi nes a condominium as a building that can be separated into units for individual ownership and which include personal and common properties. The Condominium Acts does not specify in any detail the specifi c requirements necessary in order for it to be identifi ed as a condominium. As long as the building is able to hold ownership separately according to the area, whereby each area consists of private ownership in the property and joint ownership in the common property. There are no specifi cations in the Condominium Act itself outlining height or space requirements, nor are there any specifi cations outlining the minimum amount of individual units necessary within the building. Local rules and regulations will apply. Once the property is registered as a condominium the Land Department will issue title deeds for each of the condominium units. This process ought to take place under law within 90 days of the “completed” application submitted to the authorities. It should be noted that incomplete applications or questions from the authorities often in practice delay this process sometimes in excess of a year. Foreigners who qualify for ownership under section 19 of the Condominium Act are permitted to have individual freehold ownership of a condominium unit within the foreign ownership quota. This means that in case of 100 equal condominium units in a project 49 can be foreign owned. The remaining 51 units are restricted for foreign ownership and must be owned by Thai nationals or Thai entities. The rules for the qualifi cation of a foreigner to own a condominium freehold according to section 19 of the Condominium Act are as follows:

Foreigners permitted to have residence in the Kingdom of • Thailand under the Immigration law;Foreigners permitted to enter into the Kingdom of Thailand • under the investment promotion law; Foreign persons as provided in Section 97 and 98 of the Land •

Code and registered as juristic persons under Thai law; Juristic persons which are aliens under the Announcement of • the National Executive Council No.281 dated November 24, B.E. 2515 and have obtained promotion certifi cate under investment promotion law; Foreigners or juristic persons regarded by Thai law as aliens who • have brought in foreign currency into the Kingdom of Thailand or withdraw money from Thai Baht account of the person who have residence outside the Kingdom of Thailand or withdraw money from a foreign currency account.

Generally foreigners qualify for ownership by transferring foreign currency into Thailand at least equal to the purchase price of the condominium unit and having obtained a Foreign Exchange Transaction form issued by the fi nancial institution inside Thailand that exchanged the foreign currency into Thai baht.CONCLUSIONForeigners should note that there are two types of condominiums in Thailand, which are registered and unregistered condominiums. Unregistered condominiums are not licensed under the Condominium Act and therefore do not off er freehold ownership but only leasehold and should be referred to for clarity at ‘apartments’. If a foreigner intends to invest in a condominium project off -the-plan the respective sale agreement should clearly mention that it is a project under the Condominium Act and that transfer of ownership will take place at the land department and if it concerns a leasehold or freehold purchase. In case of a true condominium each condominium unit will have a government issued title deed. Leasehold apartment sale structures will usually involve a lease agreement. A leasehold apartment could have separate house book stating the address of the unit, but as a foreign investor do not confuse a house book with an ownership document for a condominium. l Vaccines are weakened or dead bacteria or viruses that we put into the body to stimulate our immune system, thus preventing us from contracting a disease or becoming ill. There’s a bit more to it than that, but essentially when we’re vaccinated, we’re fooling our immune system into believing that the real virus or bacteria is invading our body.

Our immune system fi ghts the disease and because the bacteria or virus is already dead, our immune system usually wins the fi ght, and in doing so, makes antibodies. These antibodies which remain in our system, sometimes for life, are always ready to fi ght again, the next time the bacteria or virus invades our body. We become in eff ect, immune to the disease.

The fi rst vaccine was developed over 200 years ago to fi ght smallpox and because of its success, smallpox has now been totally eradicated from the world. This is the fi rst and only time that an infectious disease has been eliminated from the planet. There are a few frozen samples that are held in laboratories in the USA and Russia. Following the 9-11 terrorist attack, the US government requested manufacturers to start making the smallpox vaccine again, just in case terrorists were able to access the frozen samples and mass produce the smallpox virus. Today there’s enough vaccine on hand to protect the American people in the event of a smallpox outbreak. There’s also a continuing debate on whether the frozen smallpox samples should

VaccinationsVaccines are one of the medical and scientific breakthroughs that have made a dramatic impact on the control of disease and illness. Simplifying the discussion as we do here, fails to convey the impact they’ve had on society. But how much do we know about the vaccinations that have been assimilated by nearly everyone on the planet?

cause chickenpox in children and shingles in adults, are also optional. There’s also the controversial HPV vaccination which immunizes females against cervical cancer and genital warts.

Most vaccinations are given whilst we’re children. However even adults should ensure they’re immunized against disease. You should consider yearly infl uenza shots, as well as ensuring a tetanus booster is given every 10 years. The new HPV vaccinations should be considered for women under 50 years of age, and if you’re elderly then the MMR vaccine is recommended, if you haven’t already had it. The VZV vaccine is also recommended for adults over 60 years.

There’s also some controversy about the safety of vaccines and there are cases where reactions, sometimes severe and leading to death, do occur. Usually reactions are mild such as a slight fever or a sore arm where the injection was given. Court cases in the United States are proceeding in which parents have claimed that childhood vaccinations cause complications such as autism and other neurological disorders, claims that are strongly disputed by experts.

There’s no doubt that vaccines have contributed to eradicating some diseases and they certainly have prevented millions of deaths arising from illness. If you’re unsure of your immunization status, discuss this with your doctor.

be destroyed, eliminating the risk of terrorists accessing them. Scientists, of course, want to keep the samples for further laboratory study.

Thailand follows general standards recommended by the Pediatric Society of Thailand when it comes to vaccinations, and this normally commences at birth with the BCG vaccination being administered for protection against tuberculosis or TB. At birth children also get the Hepatitis B jab, which is repeated after one and six months. The DPT vaccination provides protection against three diseases; diphtheria, pertussis or whooping cough and tetanus. DPT is given in a series of fi ve injections at two, four, six and eighteen months of age and again at four to six years of age. The OPV vaccination commencing at two months protects against polio, which is followed by the MMR vaccine, another mixture of three vaccines to immunize against measles, mumps and rubella. MMR is usually given around one year of age, with a booster between four and six years of age. The JE vaccination for protection against Japanese encephalitis is a series of three shots, the fi rst given at one year of age, the second, one to four weeks later, and the fi nal shot at two to three years of age.

All of the above vaccinations are compulsory in Thailand. There are additional vaccinations that are optional and many doctors would recommend that parents consider including them in the overall vaccination schedule.

These include the Hib vaccine which protects against ‘haemophilus infl uenza type b’ bacteria. This can cause epiglottitis, a swelling of the throat, and a disease called bacterial meningitis. A new vaccine is the PVC vaccine which protects against pneumococcal infections including pneumonia, septicemia and bacterial meningitis. This vaccine also protects against the Rotavirus which causes severe gastroenteritis. The infl uenza vaccination is another optional vaccination that parents should consider to protect against this highly contagious respiratory viral illness. The HAV vaccine, for hepatitis A and the VZV vaccine for varicella-zoster virus, one of the eight herpes viruses that
