From the Rabbi’s Study

1,000 Thank You’s From Our President

Over the past month as Rabbi Charles Arian has been recovering from sur-gery, something wonderful has been happening at Kehilat Shalom.

So many of our congregants have stepped forward to help fill-in to make our services more meaningful on so many levels by helping to lead our daily Minyan, Shabbat, and Holi-day Services. We have had some wonderful Torah and Haftorah readers, congregants giving speeches and introducing the various weekly portions, and many wiling and able to help when asked.

A special thank you to Rabbi Raphael. Thank you for being there for us during Shiva Minyans, read-ing Torah, giving speeches, and helping to lead our services. We owe you so much and thank you for offering our congregation spiritual, emotional, and educational support during this time.

Proud of our accomplishments

As I walked thru the halls of Kehilat Shalom the other day my eyes glanced at some names on plaques on our walls like Rosenfield, Mintz, Klinger, Feldman, Eisig, Press, Krones, Ettinger, and Levin-son who financially helped put and keep us on a great path over the past 45 years.

President’s Message

If you or someone you know within the con-gregation family is in need of help, please contact the synagogue office. We can’t as-sist you if we don’t know you need us. Our community is for sharing joy as well as sor-rows, so don’t be afraid to reach out.

We also want to know of your achievements, joys, and life events. The Shofar is your place to brag a bit. Often when we hear that others are doing well, it gives those who of us who may be in times of stress hope for the future. So, on that note, please share your happiness with us and contact me at [email protected].

Be well,

Keleigh

Shalom! I'm your new Kehilat Sha-lom administrator, Leann Sherman. I

am delighted to be part of a congre-gation which is quite clearly com-prised of very warm, friendly mem-

bers. I am a proud native Pitts-burgher and lived for 22 yrs. in scenic West Hartford, CT. Two years ago, I moved to

Rockville where I have family. My professional background includes geriatric social work, com-munity outreach, events planning and office ad-ministration. I also enjoy writing and editing and

am excited about contributing to the Shofar!

In my spare time, I enjoy walking, antiquing, discovering local music and of course, exploring the D.C. area. I am looking forward to meeting everyone and I invite you to stop by to say hi.

Membership Corner… Join us on Sunday May 31, 1-5pm at the Rockville

Town Center for the Israeli Fest . Enjoy Israeli food,

music, arts and crafts, dance, and vendors. Kehilat

Shalom has been invited to have a table at the Fest, so

if you or your family are available to help for a few

hours, (we really need the participation of young fami-

lies) please contact Bob Goldberg at:

[email protected]. Bobbie and I would love it if

you could join us!

Becky Rutchik is leaving Kehilat Shalom in June. She has done a great job working the front office and

as our Youth Director. We’re planning a Simcha

Shabbat on June 20 in her honor to say “thank you”

to Becky for her contributions to Kehilat Shalom and

wish her the very best in her new life in Texas. We’ll

all miss her. Contributions to the Simcha Shabbat are

welcome and appreciated.

If you attended the first Kehilat Shalom Volunteer

and Community Celebration Event in honor of

Tom & Linda Loggie, then you know what a suc-

cess it was and what a good time was had by all. A

really BIG THANKS was given to Tom and

Linda Loggie for all the hard work, endless hours and

contributions they made to Kehilat Shalom over the

past few years. A big thank you to everyone who

worked on the event and helped to make it such a suc-

cess.

If you haven’t already heard, Rabbi Arian is probably

home now and recuperating. He welcomes your

phone calls, emails, and text messages. If you want to

stop by the house, just give Keleigh a call to let her

know you’re coming by.

Also, we’d like to thank everyone who has been able

to lend a helping hand to Steve & Andi Epstein.

They’ve asked us to say thank you to everyone for

their kindness on their behalf.

See you next month,

Bob and Bobbie

Torah Fund

In choosing mishpachah as the theme for the 5775 Torah Fund pin, we are acknowledging both the sanctity that comes with being one big family and the complexity of our families and relationships. There is no one kind of Jewish family in the world today. Our families are di-

verse, and this pin is something to be worn proudly by women in all stages and kinds of family life: married, partnered, single, divorced, widowed, LGBT, straight, mothers, aunts, sisters, daughters.

As we support the programs of The Jewish Theological Seminary, the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies, and the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies, we proclaim that we as women in all walks of life are proudly shaping the future of the big, 3,000-year-old Jewish family.

Men’s Club News Involving Jewish Men in Jewish Life

Jim Feldman had everyone's attention at the Men's Club April breakfast meet-ing, regaling the attendees with his stories about his volunteer stints with the group Volunteers for Israel. The organization sent Jim and fellow volun-teers to work on Israeli Defense Force bases, as-sisting with such tasks as folding parachutes, clean-ing tanks and other jobs. To learn more about these volunteer opportunities, go to the organization's website at http://www.sar-el.org/.

At the May 17 breakfast meeting, members spent some time eating and schmoozing and then joined forces with other volunteers to perform vital upkeep and maintenance of the synagogue's grounds. Thanks to all who volunteered for this activity and to Rich Jaffe--as always--for preparing breakfast.

We really need to restructure the Men’s Club from the ground up. It should be interesting to all men of the Synagogue. An organizational meeting will be held June 14, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. and the next breakfast will be held on Sunday morning June 21, following the morning minyan.

Hope to see you there.

PAID SICK DAYS PLAY DAY IN MONTGOMERY VILLAGE

No one should have to choose between their health - or their children's health - and

their job. But families across Maryland and in Montgomery County are struggling.

Without access to paid sick days, parents have to send sick kids to school (where

they can infect others!) or lose much-needed pay and risk losing their jobs.

Join Moms Rising and Jews United for Justice for a free family story and play time, where families can have fun and

take action to support the local campaign for paid sick days in Montgomery County … so that all families can stay

home and get better when they need to.

Featuring:

a special musical performance by Oh Susannah ✿

storytime ✿ healthy treats ✿ face painting ✿ arts + crafts

kids and parents taking action for social justice together!

New legislation would ensure that all Montgomery County's working parents can be there for their kids or

take care of themselves. Sick leave keeps us all healthier by letting sick folks get better - instead of com-

ing to work or school sick and spreading germs. Let's get the kids in on the action because our council

needs to know that paid sick days doesn't just help workers, it helps our families.

Join Moms Rising and Jews United for Justice for a fun afternoon of family-friendly activities and opportu-

nities to change the world right here in Montgomery Village - with award-winning storybook A Sick Day

for Amos McGee, arts and crafts, healthy treats, and simple, powerful action you can take as a family!

Please sign up so that we can plan for your family. Designed for ages 2-10 - all are welcome.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL News

We would like to thank all of our teachers: Tammy Jaffe, Lindsey Jackson and Elissa Balsley for a great 2014-2015 school year. The year culminated with a wonderful Reli-gious School Shabbat service with many prayers and readings led by the Religious School students followed by ice cream sundaes.

Our board, made up of so many talented individuals have a lot to be proud of. We have accomplished so

much in the past couple of years. As my term as President winds down, I am confident that future

boards will continue to make the decisions needed to keep us on track.

In no particular order, here are some of our accomplishments I have been proud of;

*FINANCIAL HOUSE IN ORDER-By selling our education building, having equity in our main building,

and refinancing, we will have capital to sustain us for many years.

*GREAT COMMITTEES - Many important decisions are now made at this level.

*BOARD MEETINGS - We all work a lot better together now, and Executive and General Board meet-

ings end by9:30PM.

*EVENTS - Cantors Concert, Installation and Shabbat Dinners, Celebrations to numerous to mention.

*ADULT LEARNING - Kiddush Konversations, joint programming with other shuls.

*RELIGIOUS SCHOOL - Ran in the black last year for the first time ever. Great Youth Programming.

*RENTALS - Income now accounts for 25% of our overall revenues.

*COMMUNICATIONS - So many internal and external sources to get the word out; Shofar, Announce-

ments, Rabbis Message, and Social Media sites to name a few.

*CLERGY - Learned Rabbi, and award winning Cantor.

*MEMBERSHIP - Has stabilized over past couple of years.

*VOLUNTEERS - Many give time in office, kitchen, landscaping, serving on various committees and

boards.

*GOOD AND WELFARE - Shining star offering support for Shiva Minyans, meals, and persons in need.

Kehilat Shalom. “Where friends become family.” I think we have moved much closer to this goal but

much more work needs to be done.

What is Leadership Anyway?

For those of you who will step up to lead our congregation into the future, Leadership has nothing to do

with seniority or position, nothing to do with titles or personal attributes. Leadership is having a vision

and getting things done thru other people.

I am proud to be a member of Kehilat Shalom, and proud to be joining a group of great Past Presi-

dents Goldgraben, Moskowitz, Lerner, Beitler, Rutchik, and Feldman to name a few and continue to offer

my leadership.

Enjoy the Summer!!

“They will be remembered”

Kehilat Shalom has two sections of cemetery plots at the Gan Zikaron Memorial Park in Comus, MD.

The Garden of Remembrance (Gan Zikaron) Memorial Park has been established by Washington Hebrew

Congregation as a service to the entire Jewish community of the Greater Washington area.

Developed and managed as a non-profit organization, it is the only cemetery in the region that is Jewish

owned and operated, and open to members of all congregations and those who are unaffiliated with a

congregation.

In a tranquil, beautifully landscaped setting amid gently rolling hills in northern Montgomery County,

the Garden of Remembrance is on 152 acres of meadows and woodlands at the foot of the majestic

Sugarloaf Mountain. It is just off Interstate 270, convenient to reach from everywhere in the Greater

Washington area.

The Garden of Remembrance provides comprehensive services in accordance with all branches of

Judaism, reflecting the full range of Jewish practices and honoring personal preferences.
