West Point and Fort DuffIeld

Founded in 1796, West Point is one of the oldest towns in Kentucky. At the confluence of the Ohio and Salt Rivers, many famous people visited the town in its early history, including John James Audubon, Henry Clay, Andrew Jackson and John Muir. During the Civil War, the Union built a hilltop fortification in West Point overlooking the Ohio. Named Fort Duff-ield, this impregnable fortress was never challenged. Today, it is on the Civil War Discovery Trail and is open year-round. Camp Young, later Camp Knox, was established in West Point in 1903. In 1918, thousands of WWI soldiers trained here. Later, the camp was moved away from the river and became Fort Knox.

Bourbon History in the Area

Distilled spirits have been a part of southwest Louisville for quite some time. Illegal moonshining has a rich and notorious history in Kentucky and the South Points Scenic Area is rumored to have had its fair share. The swampy and hilly areas south of Louisville were able to provide camouflage and ensure privacy. Moonshining had been documented in the wet woods by Jacob Niles who tells a story of local moonshiner whose best customer owned a local tavern and kept bottles of his product in a gunny sack submerged in a nearby pond. When a customer entered the tavern and let their secret preference be known, the owner would say to his assistant, “Oppie, take a walk.” This was the signal for retrieving a pint. If he said, “Oppie take two walks”, he came back with a quart.Legal bourbon distilling has a very strong connection to southwest Louisville. In the early 1900s the Pleasure Ridge Park Distillery produced 10,000 gallons of bourbon daily, making the brands “Old Pepper Springs,” “Old Times” and “Aristocrat Rye.” The only vestige of the distillery is a street named “Railroad Avenue” that connected a railroad spur to the distillery. After prohibition (1920-1933) eight distilleries opened in the Shively area.One, the Stitzel-Weller Distillery, opened on DerbyDay in 1935 and for decades it was known formaking some of the very finest bourbon available.It was originally operated by Julian P. Van Winkle,Alex T. Farnsley, and A. Ph. Stitzel. In 2014, Stitzel-Weller reopened to the public as the home forBulleit Frontier Whiskey. Located only five milesfrom downtown Louisville, the Bulleit Experienceat Stitzel-Weller is one of the most convenient andimpressive along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.http://bulleitexperience.com.

Can you tell me how to get to Mann’s Lick?

Any local will tell you that there’s more than one Manslick Road. Frankly it can be confusing, but at one time all roads led to a famed site of one of Kentucky’s first industries: salt making. In frontier Kentucky, the longhunters followed big game or their trails to salty springs where the animals would lap from salt water pools. The salt licks were critical in an age before refrigeration. One salt lick, Mann’s Lick, was one of the biggest and best and was discovered near present-day Fairdale. It is said that in the late 1790s the area had hundreds if not thousands of kettles boiling and produced salt 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Iroquois Amphitheatre

The Iroquois Amphitheatre opened in 1938. It was built by Works Progress Administration (WPA) workers during the Great Depression. The amphitheater was built in 75 days for a cost of $50,000. Over the years, a number of famous names have performed at the Iroquois Amphitheatre. They include: Jeannette McDonald, Elaine Stritch, Don Ameche, Audrey Meadows and Liberace. Today, the 2,366-seat amphitheater is a hot venue offering concerts, performances and movie screenings throughout its season. Recent performers have features such diverse acts

as author Steven King, Wilco, The Decemberists, My Morning Jacket, Garrison Keillor, Gregg Allman, the Artic Monkeys and Rob Zombie. The Iroquois Amphitheatre is the Official Amphitheatre of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Churchill Downs

Organized in 1874 as the Louisville Jockey Club by sportsman Colonel M. Louis Clark, what is now the world’s most famous horse race track was built on land leased from Clark’s uncles, John and Henry Churchill. Its twin-spired grandstand, a National Historic Landmark was first used in 1895.Referred to as the “Run for the Roses,” the first Kentucky Derby was run on this track, May 17, 1875. African-American jockey Oliver Lewis rode H. P. McGrath’s Aristides to victory.

The Wet Woods along THE Wilderness Road

A large part of south Louisville, including area just north of present day Fairdale and straddling both sides of present day I-65, was at one time a great dark swamp. The swamp was created by beavers who had dammed up the many creeks which flowed into the large pond in the center of the area, called Oldham’s Pond, and thence into the aptly named Pond Creek. Called the Wet Woods, it was a mysterious and at times a mythical place with a long history and an abrupt ending. Wilderness Road, the main route used by early settlers to reach Kentucky from the east passed through the eastern edge of the wet woods, along a large buffalo trace that extended from the Falls of the Ohio River to Bullitt’s Lick

in the south. The area was impassable in high water all the way up through the 19th century. The wet woods was a hunter’s paradise, teaming with wild-life, yet it was also a dangerous place and a notorious hangout for thugs and thieves. There were numerous taverns and inns throughout the wet woods that were known for nightly brawls. Alas, the wet woods is no more having been drained by a series of ditches in the 20th century.

Nature at its Best!

Southwest Louisville is truly an oasis within the community. Ten thousand acres of beautiful parks, forest, meadows and preserved riparian areas are found within the South Points Scenic Area, and nearly 70% of the entire acreage of the Louisville Metro Parks’ system. Nature is at its finest in southwest Louisville from the valley of the Ohio River where one can witness sightings of nesting bald eagles to the tops of the knobs with its magnificent Chestnut Oaks. Opportunities for exploring the great out-doors are plentiful whether one is seeking the solitude of a woodland hike, the serenity of primitive camping, or the pleasure of dipping a line. The Farnsley-Moremen House

The Farnsley-Moremen home is the centerpiece of a 300-acre historic site on the Ohio River. The house is named for the people who brought it to life through their farming and river trade: Gabriel Farnsley and the Moremen family. Built in 1837 by Gabriel Farnsley, the house, farm and landing were purchased by Alanson and Rachel Moremen in 1862. Throughout most of the 19th century, Riverside boasted an active riverboat landing. Boats traveling on the 19th century superhighway of the Ohio River might stop to take

on supplies, fuel, or rest at Riverside’s landing. Today, Riverside is an Ohio River landmark. The prop-erty includes the restored Farnsley-Moremen House, a reconstructed detached kitchen, seasonal archaeology digs, a pavilion and gardens. Special events and programs are offered throughout the year where visitors tour the house and grounds.

The Little Loomhouse, Lou Tate & the Happy Birthday”song

“Happy Birthday” was sung for the first time at what is now the Little Loomhouse. Louisville sisters, Mildred and Patty Hill, were kindergarten teachers who wrote and published many songs. In 1893, during a birthday party at a friend’s summer cabin, they suggested the lyrics to their song “Good Morning to All” be changed and the “Happy Birthday” song was created! Lou Tate (1906-1979) was a nationally-recognized collector, teacher, and proponent of textile arts. In the 1930s, Tate developed a portable teaching loom attracting national attention. When Tate began teaching textile arts to children at the Loomhouse, Eleanor Roosevelt sponsored her first students. Today, the Little Loomhouse preserves Lou Tate’s legacy and continues to promote the textile arts.

ButtonMold KnobLouisville highest elevations are found within the “knobs” of the South Points Scenic Area. These steeply sloped large hills are erosional remnants of great deltas created as the Appalachian Mountains were rising and being eroded by rivers. One such knob, Buttonmold Knob, located right along Kentucky’s famed Wilderness Trail. Buttonmold Knob is so-named because of the circular, flat shape of crinoids fossils found there. These fossils made their way into the hands of such scientific luminaries as the eccentric French-born Constantine Samuel Rafinesque who published the first paper on the fossils of this late Paelozoic era. As a result of his work, Buttonmold Knob fossils were studied in every major museum and university in Europe.
