President’s Message

Page 3 Shepherd News

Once again the cold weather is upon us which is evidenced by the slowing down of training particularly on Wednesday evenings. I can only suggest that every one stay warm! Just a reminder that the Club has its 2018 National raffle well underway so please help the club’s fund-raising campaign by buying a ticket or selling a book. Please see Salvatore or approach Steve Collins to pick up a raffle book to sell. Kelly Smith is also after ideas for fundraising to help with our National so please speak to Kelly and Kym Leonard who have agreed to help in this area. National Clothing and memorabilia will soon be available for purchasing and once finalised, order forms will be made available via the club’s website. Buy the time this Shepherd News comes out we should have held a meeting to discuss the future of The German Shepherd Dog Council within the WUSV and also the future of our club with our affiliation to the Council. Members will be keep informed of the results as they come to hand. To highlight some of our achievements in Australia in fighting for the breed in this country I have cop-ied some information that was posted recently on a social media site which I thought quite pertinent. 1929 to 1972 - 43 year importation ban of the GSD into Australia. (GSDCA became member of the WUSV after lifting of the ban). "There seems little doubt that the establishment of the GSDCA and the subsequent staging of the first National Show in Sydney in 1967 provided the background to which enthusiasts could be motivated to mount a concerted campaign to have the Import Ban lifted". (A condensed history of the GSD in Australia) 1960 - Establishment of the GSDCA 1975 - Tattooing in NSW 1977 - First Breed Survey (Australia was the first English speaking country to introduce the BS scheme 1982 - HD Scheme born 1993 - ED Scheme (2004 compulsory in Germany) The GSD in Australia has come a long way through self regulation, schemes, recommended breeding practices, conscien-tious breeders and the determination and tenacity of people such as, the late Roy Brabham, Hon. Don Chipp, Sam Boni-facio, HJ Neddermeyer, Tom Luxton to name just a few. As always look after yourselves your family and four legged friends.

First Vice President

Our training school has been well attended by members and numbers are pleasing from week to week. Thank you again to Head Trainer, Robert MacPherson and all our dedicated team of instructors who attend each week to ensure our obedience members are well looked after. Despite the weather, mem-ber participation has been good and steady. The Animal Expo was held 28 to 30 April 2017 at the Wayville Showgrounds and the GSDC SA again had a stand where our breed was promoted. Thank you to Sophie, Ben and Alex Lawrence, Andrew O’Lough-lin and Isabella De Lucia who manned our stand with their well behaved dogs. There were many members of the public who attended the expo again this year and were able to come up and meet the dogs and ask questions about the breed. We will be holding a C&W test soon at the club so if any member is interested in participating, please see Robert to register. Information about the C&W Test is available on the GSD Council website if any member is interested. More information will be printed on the club website and facebook page about this in due course. Unfortunately, our Balmead Shield Trial has had a change of date this year. It will be held in October so hopefully, the extended time will allow our own team extra training and put them in a good position to win the shield! To those of you attending trials, good luck and hopefully the titles you work towards you will achieve.

Just a couple of highlights since the last Shepherd News.

The GSDC of A have voted in favour of Micro chipping being the only recognised form of identification across the range of Breed Improvement schemes.

The GSDC of A have been advised of the WUSV Harmonisation program to be implemented progressively over the next Four (4) years

The GSDC of A NBC and Judges Committee meetings will be held in Adelaide on the weekend of July 29th and 30th.

ALL MEMBERS WELCOME Our Balmead Trial will be held on Sunday 29th October this year. We will require a number of Stewards and helpers on the day. Please contact Andrew O’Loughlin if you can provide assistance. The Club membership has grown to over 400 members, which is very pleasing, this is almost a ten (10%)percent increase over last years numbers. Our membership is at a ten (10) year high. To All those member breeders who are signing up new puppy owners well done and keep up the good work. Planning is well under way for the 2018 National Show and Trial. Many members have already taken Raf-fle books to sell, however, more books need to be sold to make the National a success.

Roundworms A large percentage of puppies and kittens are born with microscopically small roundworm, or ascarid, larvae in their tissues. The larvae is introduced to the developing pup (or kitten) right in the mother's uterus -- via migra-tion through the mother's tissues!

Roundworm larvae can also be transferred to the nursing pup or kitten from the mother's milk. The larvae make their way to the intestinal tract where they can grow up to five inches in length. They start shedding eggs and try desperately to keep house in the small intestine of the pup or kitten.

The eggs that the adult worms pass in the stool can now reinfest the animal or other dogs and cats if somehow the egg-bearing stool is eaten. When the worm eggs hatch, larvae are released inter-nally to migrate to the animal's lungs where the larvae (remember, the larvae are microscopic in size) are finally coughed up, swallowed, and finally grow up to adults in the small intestine.

Female roundworms can produce 200,000 eggs in just one day. These eggs are pro-tected by a hard shell, which enables them to exist in soil for up to years. Puppies and kittens with active roundworms in the intestines often have a pot-bellied appearance and poor growth. The worms may be seen in vomit or stool. If not treated in time, a severe infestation can cause death by intestinal blockage.

Roundworms don't just affect young pups or kittens, though. They can infest adult dogs and cats, too. How-ever, as mentioned above, the larvae can encyst in body tissue of adult dogs and cats, remain dormant for peri-ods of time, and can activate during the last stages of pregnancy to infest the puppies and kittens.

Worming the mother has no effect on the encysted larvae in the body tissues and cannot prevent the worms from infecting the newborn. Almost all wormers work only on the adult parasites in the intestinal tract.

Whipworms

This parasite is more often seen in dogs than cats. Adult whipworms, although seldom seen in the stool, look like tiny pieces of thread, with one end enlarged. They live in the cecum, the first section of the dog's large in-testine. Infestations are usually difficult to prove since the whipworms shed comparatively few eggs; so an ex-amination of even several stool samples may not reveal the presence of whipworms.

If a dog is presented with chronic weight loss and passes stool that seems to have a covering of mucous (especially the last portion of stool the dog passes), and lives in a kennel situation or an area where whipworms are prevalent, the veterinarian may prescribe a whipworm medication based upon circumstantial evidence.

Although they seldom cause a dog's death, whipworms are a real nuisance for the dog and can be a problem for the veterinarian to diagnose.

Hookworms

These are also much more common in dogs than in cats. They are very small, thin worms that fasten to the wall of the small intestine and suck blood. Dogs get hookworms from larval migration in the uterus, from con-tact with the larvae in stool-contaminated soil, or from ingesting the eggs after birth. As with roundworms, the hookworm larvae can also be transferred to the nursing pup from the mother's milk.

A severe hookworm infestation can kill puppies, often making them severely anemic from the loss of blood to the hookworms' vampire-like activities! Chronic hookworm infestation is a common cause of illness in older dogs, often demonstrated as poor stamina, feed efficiency and weight maintenance. Other signs include bloody diarrhea, weight loss, anemia, and progressive weakness. Diagnosis is made by examining the faeces for eggs under a microscope.
