By Cindy Martinusen Coloma I’d driven by the Shasta Family YMCA for many years, had friends who were members and said good things about it, and I liked that it had both outdoor and indoor heated pools. I also knew the famous song and the hand motions to Y-M-C-A. But when I was comparison-shopping with other local fitness centers, I was in for quite a surprise as I discovered that the Y is not just another gym. Its rich history began in the 1800’s in London; and by 1851, the concept had inspired the YMCA movement in the United States. In 1867, the Y in Chicago offered the first safe and affordable housing to young men moving from rural areas to the cities. The facilities expanded and pro- vided gyms, auditoriums and dormitories with the goal from its inception to reach out to their communities and meet its diverse needs. By 1940, the organization offered rooms for up to 100,000 people across the US, more than any hotel chain at that time. Martin Luther King Jr., Jack Kerouac, Malcolm X, and journalist Dan Rather were a few who resided at a YMCA facility. Today, there are over 10,000 Y locations. While it’s evolved with the times, the Y holds true to its roots and beliefs: ”By nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving the nation’s health and well-being, and supporting and serving our neighbors, the Y ensures that everyone has the opportunity to become healthier, more confident, connected and secure.” During national and international crises like Katrina, 9/11, the Pacific Rim tsunamis of 2004, and the 2010 Haitian earthquake, the Y responds by fundraising, efforts to assist in rebuilding, and by shoring up hope to the survivors. It also supports our military and their families through various programs, it was chosen as the venue for First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” program to get children to exercise, and has the goal to provide 7.5 million children with after- school meals and snacks. And that’s just a glimpse into the many reaching arms of the Y. At our Shasta Family YMCA, I was amazed to discover the wealth of programs offered. Our Y has local partnerships to fight childhood obesity and programs to give hope, help and opportunity to children raised in Shasta County motels. There are coat drives, children’s read- ing programs, specialty camps, two preschools at area schools, and financial assistance to be sure the doors are open to everyone who wishes to join. Adults have programs in everything from swimming and triathlon training to martial arts and chess games. Youth and adults can get First Aid, CPR, and babysitting certifications. Also, it was the Record Searchlight Best Health and Fitness Center in the North State two years in a row (2012, 2013). With four studios, there are group exercises of every kind including: yoga, Pilates, Zumba, weight training, high cardio, low impact, and senior classes. There are newly remodeled workout rooms and of course, the two swimming pools that offer lessons for every age as well as open swim times. After becoming part of the Y, I’m still continually impressed at the new aspects I discover. It’s not just there to help me with my fitness goals, or to offer its members a diversity of pro- grams, or to have a fun childcare program. It does that while staying true to its history to build our nation, one person and one community at a time. It’s about changing lives. It’s about changing our world. With all of this and much much more, the Y can hardly be called just a fit- ness center. And now that’s what I think about when I pull into the parking lot or do the hand motions to the song. v SHASTA FAMILY YMCA 1155 N. I’d driven by the Shasta Family YMCA for many years, had friends who were members and said good things about it, and I liked that it had both outdoor and indoor heated pools.

Martin Luther King Jr., Jack Kerouac, Malcolm X, and journalist Dan Rather were a few who resided at a YMCA facility.

Today, there are over 10,000 Y locations. (CEO CORNER cont. from page 1...) Taking the liberty to borrow from a recent Record Searchlight editorial, “…life involves change and the challenges of growth are far better than the problems of decline.” Standing on the shoulders of those before us, your growing Y has undergone significant changes over the past five years in the areas of program development, organizational realignment and business practices. These changes have been driven by an extraordinary senior management team that now welcomes Kristen Lyons as Director of Health and Wellness. Kristen will bring her extraordinary combination of education (B.S. in Recre-ation Management, a Master’s in Business Administra-tion, and a variety of fitness related certifications) with rich and diverse work experiences that include heading up and growing the City of Pismo Beach Recreation Divi-sion. It will be exciting to watch the growth and increased diversity in aquatics, wellness, youth and family programs under Kristen’s leadership.

As Kristen said, “It’s an honor to join the Y’s first-rate team that is moving so rapidly in serving our community.” Your Y exists to help many people in the community, especially children and families, to become healthier and happier. The 2014 New Year promises continued growth, and it would not be possible without the generosity of our community. v

EXCERCISE FoR KIDS by Dale T. Maynor, Personal Trainer & Nutritionist

Training children is different than training adults in principle. The main difference is the end goal – generally children just want to have fun. Adults, on the other hand, require formalized training with a specific goal and purpose (ie: weight loss, weight gain, sports performance, etc.) It’s the experience that children are having now that is so essential to their long term suc-cess with health via exercise. We want to turn kids into healthy adults.

Kids should not be burdened with body image prob-lems. We want them to feel good about themselves and exercising. Kids are prone to boredom, confusion, frus-tration and apathy more so than adults, so it’s critical

that kids make exercising memories that are positive and fun – the Y’s youth group exercise classes do just that. Look a little closer at Youth Agility and you’ll see smiles and crazy energy as each action develops stronger bodies through games and offbeat exercises. Kids love T’ai Chi Swords yet they are learning grace and discipline of mind and body. And what child doesn’t enjoy beating “drums” in Kid Beats? Yet, you’ll know they are developing rhythm and challenging hand-brain connections. Not all children are engaged in traditional sports nor do they need to be. There are many ben-efits to non-traditional activities and general play. Most importantly, kids (and adults!) need to be having fun, because if they are, exercise will be a life-long habit. v

Rebecca Hoerber - gymnastics InstructorRebecca leads and teaches the Y’s gymnastics program which is targeted to wide range of ages and abilities. She is USAG certified and continually learns through online seminars to increase her knowledge and expertise. One of Rebecca’s favorite things about teaching/coaching is getting to know the personalities of her students. Rebecca says, “I’m not just shaping gymnasts, I’m helping shape people - and I love being a part of their lives.” In addition to her time at the Y, she coaches her daughter, Elizabeth, in competitive gymnastics. She is pleased to say that Elizabeth suc-

cessfully completed two levels in one year and even qualified for the State Competition.

WELCoME! NEW INSTRUCToR - Stacie HamannStacie enjoys teaching a variety of group fitness classes. She is AFFA and Yoga Fit certified and currently teaches spin, core, and yoga. Stacie also has a background in massage therapy. When she’s not indoors teaching classes, she can be found out on the trails mountain biking or running. She craves the energy and stress relief that exercise gives her and loves to share it with her classes. She has a family of 8 and loves being a part of her students’ journey to a healthier life.

at the Y for over 10 years. His teaching focuses on form, punching, blocks and kicks and building honesty in the heart, strength and body. Martial arts has taught him and his family discipline, respect and hard work within the dojo, and has carried throughout his family’s lifestyle and hopefully in yours as well.

THE ANNUAL CAMPAIgN - THE Y.So MUCH MoRE.Our annual fundraising campaign is right around the corner and it is a great time for us to share the many ways the Y helps strengthen our community. Many see the Y as a gym but the Y is so much more! It’s a cause, dedicated to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

Take how we work with local organization The Eagle Soar Youth Activity Center, which reaches out to near homeless children and families living in area hotels. In the program, the children develop relation-ships, get homework tutoring and also mentorship. Some of the children may have never played anywhere but a parking lot. The Y is partner-ing with this program so the children and their mentors can have a safe place to be active.

Or take a look at the Y’s work with many families facing financial challenges. Did you know that the Y is ensuring as many families as possible can come to the Y to be together and be active even in the face of hardship? Or that the Y assists families so they can be a part of the afterschool program, even on limited income? The Y offers as-sistance so that kids can have an enriching, fun, and safe place to go after school.

Consider one of our flagship programs, Camp McCumber. A week of summer is packed with fun as kids experience the outdoors, being with peers, and learning important life lessons. Did you know that many children would not be able to attend without sponsorship?

These are just a few ways that the Y is touching the community, but every day the Y is helping thousands live healthier and happier lives! You may know the Y as an amazing place to swim, take a group class, meet with friends, but we are a vital part of the community. I hope you will join me and consider a gift to the Annual Campaign. The campaign will kick-off soon with a goal of $190,000. A lofty goal, for a lofty

cause. For as much as we do, every-one has a role to play. Together we can make a difference.

Together, we can achieve…so much more!

SHASTA FAMILY YMCA YoUTH SPoTLIgHTSAoife Biehle (member since 2004)

Aoife is 8 years of age and a second grader at Turtle Bay School. She is the fourth of five children. She is very proud of being half Irish and loves the visits from her Irish family. Aoife loves going to the Y. She loves all of Dale’s classes and can regularly be seen there. Kid Beats is another class she really enjoys - she loves to practice all the clapping and cup songs at home, much to the annoyance of her siblings at times. Aoife is not afraid to join in classes and try out new things. Whether its Zumba classes or T’ai Chi swords, she will give it a try!

Euan Harrington (member since 2004)

Euan is 16 years of age and a little known fact is that he is actually Irish, but you would not know it from his accent now!! He came to California from Ireland when he was 3 1/2 years old. Euan loves going to the Y. Dale has been a very big positive influence on Euan. Euan loves to attend Dale’s classes and loves to learn from him. Euan is a Junior at Foothill High School. He plays violin with the Shasta Youth Symphony. Euan volunteers two Saturdays a month at Turtle Bay working with the animals. He is the eldest of five children and is a very good big brother.

Emersyn Ortega (member since 2011) Emersyn is in first grade and enjoys reading, writing letters, and drawing pictures. Her favorite work at school is art. She recently participated in her first 2 mile fun run! Emy loves cook-ing class at the Y. She is learning to be a very big help in the kitchen and helped make Thanksgiving dinner this past year.

Deven Ortega (member since 2011) Deven is in his first year of school (pre K) and he is learning so much. He has recently learned to write his name and loves to draw. He likes get-ting new lessons at school. Deven recently participated in his first 2 mile fun run, and he also ran 13 laps in his school’s jog-a-thon, without walking. A future track star? Maybe.

MEMBERS & FRIENDS | A newsletter for members and volunteers of the Y

There’s a unique group of children enjoying the activities at the Y. Most are on the honor roll at school and thrilled to be at the Y. The difference comes when they pack up their duffle bags. Instead of returning home to eat dinner and relax in their bedrooms, these kids go “home” to a crowded one-room motel with no available food until their free breakfast at school the next morning.

According to Patti Brent, co-director of Eagles Soar Youth Activities Center, there are hundreds of children in Shasta County who live in difficult situations. They often go to bed hungry every night. “These are amazing kids, but by the second grade, they know they’re different. They don’t get invited to birthday parties; they can’t have other kids over to their houses. It’s almost impos-sible for these children to get out of their situation without help,” Patti Brent explained. To provide that help, a joint effort between ESYAC and our local Y is opening new activity-based opportunities to give these children a vision for a better future, while enriching their lives today.

ESYACSince August of 2007, Eagles Soar Youth Activities Center has been reaching out to children in the Redding Area, particularly those living in local motels. Their mission is “to provide at risk children and their families the support to succeed and the opportunity to believe so that they may realize their full po-tential through a program of tutoring, mentoring, and adventuring.” To achieve this goal, the group, run completely by volunteers and on donations, offers numerous activities including Homework Club every every week and a twice-monthly Adventure Club. These kids experience adventures such as kayaking, fishing, hiking, gold panning, and spelunking to name a few. And a meal is always provided. ESYAC also supports the families. With a high illiteracy rate among adults, the volunteers offer assistance in filling out paperwork and in communicating information to the parents of these children. While their goals are defined, ESYAC regularly meets whatever needs arise, which are varied and innumerable. “What’s true of all of us, the mentors and volunteers, we get as much out of the time with the children as they get from us,” Patti Brent said. “These are such great kids.”

While the program officially ends when local children turn eighteen, the relationships continue with ESYAC mentors and volunteers offering support in ways like helping prep young adults for job interviews and in filling out applications to Shasta College. “We want kids to see beyond their normal circumstances to discover a different life, a life that they can have,” Brent said. “The Y is always helping children and families in our community. This partnership was a perfect fit.”

YMCA and CDBG The Y intentionally reaches beyond being a “swim and gym” facility. CEO Al Boren explained how they regularly create programs and assistance for the community at large. Outside of the many unique programs onsite, the Y is also found at local schools where they provide preschools and afterschool programs. Previously, the Y collaborated with ESYAC on a number of child improvement programs. But with the added support of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), the Y Eagle Membership Assistance proj-ect provides 50 Y memberships for ESYAC kids and mentors. The CDBG is awarded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to the City of Redding who then allocates the grant in numerous ways for community improvement.

The OutcomeThe partnership between the Y and Eagles Soar Youth Activities Center, through CDBG, accomplishes more than just providing memberships to at-risk kids and their mentors. The time at the Y is targeted toward shaping these children’s lives. The main results are in two areas. First, the children get exposed to people. The second is exposure to activities. They find out they’re good at something and want to do more. Kids and mentors from ESYAC come together after exercising at the Y for an indoor picnic before they climb into a van and head back to their challenging lives. Juxtaposed between the two worlds, these children are honing new skills, discovering people who care and support them to succeed, gaining a vision for a better life – one within their reach. http://www.mosaicministriesreddingca.com/esyac/

Thank you for Steve Woodrum - Steve, a long-time Y member, generously donated an energy-saving pool cover for the Y’s outdoor pool. This cover is crucial in helping the Y reduce costs, allowing the outdoor pool to remain open during important, high-use times. He also donated furniture, a fountain, fans and curtains for our new yoga deck which will be used for quiet conversation and contemplation. Steve’s generosity of spirit and philanthropy in memory of his wife, Barbara, and the Luby family has inspired others throughout the North State to contribute to numerous charities. Steve says, “Money can’t buy happiness, but donating money can create happiness.” Steve leads an active and healthy lifestyle participating regularly in group exercise and working out in the wellness center and Y pools. Thank you, Steve, for believing in the Y!

Y AFTERSCHooL ENRICHINg LIVES THRoUgH “KID APPRoVED” CLUBSThe Y afterschool program offers a diverse variety of enrichment clubs giving children an opportunity to find a real passion. Y Afterschool Clubs range from chess to traveling soccer to Cooking Around the World to the Fashion Girls Group. The Y also offers church-based clubs, such as Campus Life, Extreme Kids and The Good News Club. When the children are asked what their favorite club is there are a wide range of opinions, as expected! Some liked the Hot Wheels Racing Club and Minute to Win It game challenge. Others said they like the daily art classes offered by a “real” art instructor. Whatever the club choice, the kids are involved with the planning to make sure all of the clubs are kid approved. v

Forty children and 3 staff members had an opportunity to meet friends from different afterschool programs as well as see some familiar faces. The children learned the Cha-Cha Slide, played basketball, created pic-tures using chalk, and had fun with the hula-hoops. The kids especially enjoyed the snow cones, popcorn and cotton candy. The children had a lot of fun at the event and enjoyed getting to ride a bus to the event. v

PRESCHooL KIDS gET MoVIN’ WITH JUMPIN’ NUMBERS AND SHAKIN’ SHAPES!Research shows that in order to get the best learning outcomes possible, children need to simultaneously use as many of their senses as they can when they practice. For example, if you are trying to teach a child a new word, the child should ideally see it, say it, hear it, and do it- all at the same time.

The curriculum Jumpin’ Numbers and Shakin’ Shapes does just that in a fun and motivational way! This program also meets the new Common Core State Standards. Jumpin’ Numbers and Shakin’ Shapes includes a short song for each number zero through ten, seven basic shapes, and a song to teach counting. The children and staff enjoy the songs and movements while learning their numbers and shapes.

VoLUNTEER SPoTLIgHTKELLI BRoWN, MEMBER SINCE 2000

CHILDCARE FAMILY SPoTLIgHT KRISTI TAYLoR ANDTRI CoLEMANThe Manzanita YMCA Afterschool and Preschool strive to build relationships by creating a strong family-friendly environment. Each day we develop a partnership with parents to create a positive learning experience by teaching students about good character. The Y’s core values that we highlight are Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Honesty and Sportsmanship. These character traits not only influ-ence the children during the school day but also follow them home.

Kristi Taylor and Tri Coleman are one of the families that the Man-zanita YMCA Afterschool Program serves. Tri is a second grade stu-dent and is in our afterschool Blue Group. He loves to play basket-

ball, run and is an awesome reader. With Tri’s high energy, the core value that he learned from his teacher, Ms. Jenn, is Responsibility. By learning the meaning of Responsibility, Tri slows down during homework time to focus on getting all his homework finished on his own which allows him to spend more time with his mom and sister when he goes home. Tri also has learned good Sportsmanship from Y

teacher Mr. James. Tri has learned that it’s okay to lose sometimes. Tri is a student that brings joy to the staff at the Manzanita YMCA Afterschool Program.

Tri’s mom, Kristi, is a preschool teacher at Manzanita YMCA Col-laborative Preschool. She instills the Y’s character values in the preschoolers by teaching them how to be great students. Kristi has been working with kids for 10 years and loves working for the Y because it gives her the opportunity to keep her family involved in the community. Just like her son, Kristi loves to read. They read together often.

One of Kristi’s favorite things to do as a teacher is to share a moment of discovery with her students and join in the satisfac-tion that the child feels when they learn something new. Kristi is a valued staff member who has brought great activities as well as a positive environment to the Manzanita YMCA Collaborative Preschool.

Manzanita YMCA Child Care Programs take great pride in develop-ing a family environment, and Kristi and Tri are a great example of that. Through a partnership with families, the Y gets to be a part of a greater goal – to build strong kids. v

He comes to the Y program every day with a smile and he brings joy to our program.

THE SINDERSoN FAMILY Members since 2007

Karen Sinderson has been a runner since she was young. It’s no doubt since her father was an avid runner and the family would fol-low him to area races. As Karen got older, she would participate in races as well and continued competitive running through high school and college.

THE BoND FAMILY Members since 2012

You may see (or hear) Jen working out early each morning at the Y! Jen is always happy and ready to exercise, whether it’s in Silas’ early morning Spin class or Dale’s hour-long High Intensity Functional Train-ing class. Jen’s enthusiasm is infectious and she gets her family moving too.

Jen and husband, Will, live an active life. They are both avid skiers and spend their winter weekends at Mt. Shasta Ski Park with their family. Their children Addison (age 7) and Ava (age 5) have been skiing for years and enjoy the family time up on the slopes. The Bonds take an annual ski trip to Tahoe each year with Jen’s extended family. And, in the summer they continue their active lifestyle on Lake Shasta, wake boarding, surfing and swimming off their ski boat. They continue to stay busy into the fall with family hunting trips, hik-ing and participating in family events like CASA’s Superhero run. v

As an active adult, Karen has continued running, including several marathons and long trail runs. She also cross-trains, participates in triathlons and rock climbs, and is learning to ride horses.

Karen has encouraged her family to stay active, whether it is in orga-nized sports or just playing. When her daughters were young, they would ride their bikes alongside Karen as she ran. Eventually, as they got older, they started running in area races with Karen, such as the Sunset Thru the Trees, Turkey Trot, or Mercy Christmas Dash.

Nicole Sinderson participates in cross-country, volleyball, soccer and basketball. Her sister also plays basketball, soccer and runs track. The family loves to hike together to the waterfalls, explore lo-cal trails and they’ve even done some cave exploring in the surround-ing area. They also like to swim, go for walks at the Sundial Bridge, roller skate, sled, ice skate and have even gone snowshoeing. They “love being so close to so much outdoor beauty and having the opportunities to explore it!”

If you can catch them, next time you see the Bonds, say “hi” and ask them how and where they get all that energy! v

“At first, I thought the YMCA was just another choice in gyms,” said Dr. Keri Barnes. The local chiropractor was attracted to the Y because of what it offered her family. Her three-year-old son, Eli, has attended a toddler cooking class and swim lessons, and as he grows up, she plans to enroll him in martial arts and other activities. Barnes arrives at 5 am during the workweek for her own workout. She looks forward to trying out the Drums Alive class. “I like that it offers a variety of programs that we all can enjoy. Then, I found it very interesting to hear about all that the Y does for the community.” Eli is a fan of the pool and the swimming programs. “I love to swim with Scuba Steve in the inside pool when my pool at home is cold.”

“At age forty and pregnant, my body hurt. I remembered that indoor pool and joined the

Y for the water aerobics program. I was welcomed into a group of varied ages and

physical abilities. Others there told me how they had shoulder surgery or other physical reasons

which made water exercise perfect for them. It was the ultimate fitness solution. In the water, I felt no pain and was able to exercise until just

weeks before having my baby.“ -Anonymous
