SGR February Newsletter This month's St. George Races Newsletter features a recap of the St. George Half Marathon, 5k and Kids Events; a quick highlight of two of our upcoming events; the runner spotlight piece, honoring the late David Scott; a hidden oasis as the Town's Treasure; and a list of our upcoming events. St. George Half Marathon, 5k and Kids Event Recap The St. George Half-Marathon, 5K and Kids Races went off perfectly on Saturday, January 13. In total, nearly 1,200 people registered for the half and 5K, which began and ended at the Dixie Convention Center. The majority of the athletes hailed from locales outside of Washington County, but a full 15 percent of this year’s field came from out of the state of Utah – and from all over the country – to experience one of the best races southern Utah has to offer. ourlocalrunningcommunity,afixtureatSt.GeorgeRacesevents,andanexpertwoodworker(moreonthatshortly).AresidentofCedarCity,DavidpassedawayonNovember17,2016afterabattlewithlivercancer,andwasburiednexttohisparentsinBountiful.

DavidspentthemajorityofhislifeintheSaltLake/Ogdenarea.Hedidn’tstarthislifeasarunner,butbecameoneafteryearsofbikeriding.Foranormalafternooncruise,itwasn’tunusualforDavidtohopaboardhisoldtouringbikeinwhatever“dayclothes”hewaswearing,andpedal60+miles.

OnceDavidmovedtotheCedarCityarea,hispassionforrunningexploded.It’shardtogaugeexactlyhowmanymilesheraninhislifetime.Butina2015lettertooneofhisdearfriends,Davidmentionedthatheran56milesthatweek,includinga19.6-milelongrunonSaturday.Inthatsameletter,hementionedthathehadalreadyruntwo10Ksaswellasahalf-marathon,andhewasplanningtodofourmorehalf-marathonsandtheSt.GeorgeMarathon.Atthat2015St.GeorgeMarathon–whichwasjustafewmonthsbeforehepassedaway--66-year-oldDavidposteda5:16:21time,beatinghis2013finishbyafull12minutes.

AnotherfriendnotesthatDavidtypicallyranbetween10to20milesaday,fivetosixdaysaweek.HehadmappedoutarouteintheCedarCity/Enocharea,andfaithfullyranitnearlyeverymorning.ItwaseasytotellwhoDavidwaswhenheran:Hewasthefamiliartall,slendermanwiththelonggreybeard.OnefriendrecallshischildrencallingDavid“Gandolph,”fromtheLordoftheRingsmovies,sinceDavidboreastrikingresemblancetothecharacter.

ItwasthatloveofrunningthatledDavidaveryuniquegoal:runthedistanceofacoasttocoasttrip.HistripwouldstartinSanFranciscoandendinNewYork,stretchingnearly3,000miles.Thiscross-countrytrekwasnotaliteralone;Daviddidn’tactuallystartinSanFranciscoandrunacrossthenorthernNevadadesert.Instead,itwasametaphoricalone:LoggingthemilesheraneachdayintheCedarCityarea,Davidthenusedthemtocalculatehowfaronhismetaphoricalcross-countryjourneyhe’dprogressed.Justafewweeksbeforehispassing,DavidhadcoveredtheequivalentdistanceofrunningfromSanFranciscothroughSaltLakeCityandnearlytotheColoradoborder;atotalof

approximately800miles.

WhenDavidwasn’trunning,hewasbusyvolunteeringatlocalraces,learningnewthingsandteachingothers.Heenjoyedreadingwhateverbookshecouldgethishandson,especiallyscienceandchemistry.Hewasveryknowledgeableaboutnutrition,andhappilyhelpedotherstobegineatingmorehealthily.Davidalsoenjoyedspendingtimewithhisbeloveddogsandhisfriends;judgingbythemanystoriessharedwithus,hisfriendswerehisfamily.Herememberedspecificdetailsabouttheirlives,andalwaysstayedengagedwitheachone.Forallofhisfriends,andforstrangersheencountered,hehadaperennialsmileonhisface,agenuinehandshaketoshare,andakindwordtosay.

Davidhadanothertalentthatisespeciallyworthyofmention:woodcarving.Goingintothewoods,Davidwouldfindtheperfecttree,thencutitdowntocarveitintosomethingspectacular.Theselife-sizedcreationsoftentookyearstocomplete.Oneofhismostincrediblepieceswasofafive-foot-tallrunner.

Wedon’tknowtheexact,finalpointonDavid’scoast-to-coastrun,orhowmanymoremileslayaheadofhimbeforehemadeittoNewYork.Butwedoknowitwashisgoal.Sothenexttimeyougoforarun,thinkofDavidandrunanextramileforhimtohelphimreachthatfinalfinish-line.

WeatSt.GeorgeRacesareincrediblygratefultoDavid’sfriendswhosharedhisstorywithus.WeareequallygratefultoDavidforvolunteeringatcountlessSGREventsovertheyears,andforgrowingclosetosomanyonourstaff.Heleftalastingimpactonthepeoplewhoseliveshetouched,andheisgreatlymissed.

Whenyoutakeadrivedown1450SouthinSt.George,throughtheSpringsEstatedevelopment,youprobablywouldn’texpecttofindaparkthere.Butnestledinthebackoftheneighborhoodliesawallofshrubs,andamongthoseshrubsisanentrywayintoatrueoasis.HuggingtheVirginRiver,SpringsParkoffersanescapefromthehustleandbustleofthetrafficnearby.

SpringsParkboastsabeautifulpondsurroundedbyathirdofamile-long,pavedtrail,withbencheswhereyoucansitandgazeintothewater.Placardsalsolinethetrail,informingvisitorsaboutthedifferenttypesofbirdswhomaketheparktheirhome.Aplayground,pavilion,halfbasketballcourtandopenfieldroundouttheamenitiesatSpringsPark.EnjoyviewsofPineValleyMountainasyoulistentotheriverwaterflowandthebirdschirp.Peaceandtranquilityarejustashortdriveaway!
