How to...Satin Stitch

1Start by securing the thread on the wrong side of the work.

Pull the needle through to the surfaceon the base of the outline to be filled.Take the needle to the outline on theopposite side and push it back throughto form a long, straight stitch.

2Take the needle down next to theend of the work, bringing it back

through at the start of the previousstitch forming a parallel line of thread.Repeat this process until the desiredarea is filled.

1Many modern sewing machines feature ahigher-than-average presser foot lift, allowing

thicker fabrics to be fed through with ease. Ifyour model does have this function, rememberto make the most of it!

2Get rid of excess bulk – it's often helpful totrim the seam allowance down before

stitching heavy fabrics; the fewer layers there arefor the needle to go through, the better!

3It can also help to use a larger needle size thanyou normally would – it reduces the chance

of breakage and will power through heavy layersin no time.

Cutting EdgeFollow these simple rules to ensurethat you get neat results and accurateedges when cutting your fabric. This will help the pattern pieces tofit together when it comes tosewing the project up.nAlways cut on a smooth, flatsurface, such as a table. Ensure thatyour scissors are sharp – and neveruse the same pair for cutting bothfabric and paper. Use the fullblade of the scissors for longerstraight edges, making smallercuts around curves.n If you are right-handed, placeyour left hand onto the templateand fabric and hold it securely.Holding the scissor blades atright angles to the fabric, begincutting cleanly around eachsection. Reverse the process if you're left-handed.

Keep your little ones safe from the sun this summerwith a brimmed cotton hat. Made up with sixteen smallpieces, the hat can be created from cotton scraps orremnants for a fun patchwork finish.

MUST-KNOW FABRIC FACTSTaking a critical look at the composition of amaterial will help you ascertain which techniquesto use when creating your projects. Identify thegrain of the fabric with this handy guide.

WARP: The yarns that run the length of the fabric– stronger than weft yarns and less likely to stretch.WEFT: These run over and under the warp threads,going across the fabric from selvedge to selvedge. As these yarns double back they fix the weave ofthe selvedge.BIAS: This is the diagonal line running at a 45° angleto the warp and weft. Cutting pattern pieces on thebias allows them to stretch much easier.SELVEDGE: The finished edge of woven fabrics.

Stitch DictionaryYour templates and pattern pieces mayfeature the following markings – use thisguide to get professional results every time.

NOTCHES: These symbols help youaccurately align seams. All pieces that requirejoining will have matching notches.WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS: These indicatewhat the template is and how it should beused – how many times to cut it, and whatfabric to cut it from.GRAIN LINE: This double pointed arrowdictates the placement of the template onthe fabric – ensure that it lays parallel to thegrain of the fabric.FOLD LINE: This arrow indicates theplacement of a pattern piece along a fold.Make sure that it is pushed right up againstthe fold of the fabric.

Fabric Preparationn It is advisable to launder your fabric beforeuse in the same way as you would thefinished project. This will ensure any dyerunning or shrinking occurs before you cutout the pieces.

n Once laundered, press the fabric with awarm iron to neaten, ready for pinning.n We advise laying your fabric right sides up,so that you can choose how to lay the piecesto accommodate any motif.
