Session 3-4 Aims & Outcomes:

• Aims: To explore the subject of Graphic Design styles and understand a historical pattern within them.

• To research Graphic Design styles, identify characteristics and collect relevant examples.

• To begin to construct a Graphic Design styles timeline to record findings and support further assignment development.

• Outcomes: You will understand what Graphic Design styles are and the periods they belong to. You will have collected a range of visual examples of Graphic Design styles and begun to construct a timeline of progress. You will link this to sessions on contextual designers and embed these into your timeline and research.

Graphic Design Styles Task:

• Your task for this week is as follows:

• As part of your research you need to explore the theme of Graphic Design Styles and create a timeline form mid Victorian to current styles. Your timeline should be comprehensive and support specifically the work you intend to do for assignment:

• Consider:

• Design work for each period

• Designers who worked in these periods

• Influences from designers and artists within each period

• Social, historical, and political events which may have influenced some of the styles in each period

• You will be working with Andrew during Contextual sessions and this work should be come part of your timeline

• Typefaces:

• Collect as many examples of typefaces as you can throughout the year and stick them in a separate journal or mini sketchbook.

• Collect from books, magazines, papers, the internet, take photos of typefaces you see around you, etc.

• These will be used for reference in each of your assignments.

• No need to annotate, just for inspiration.

Inspirational Collection

• Inspirational imagery & design

• Collect inspirational imagery as you go through the year.

• This might be photographs, magazine or paper clippings, images from the internet, posters leaflets, artwork and design you see around you.

• Add these to your journal or mini sketchbook to use as inspiration throughout the year.

• No need to annotate, just for inspiration.

• Task 1:

• Get into groups of two fives and a four.

• Using the designs provided, put them in date order.

• Tell me why you have dated them as you have.

• Task 2:

• In singles, select one design style and analyse it’s characteristics

• Individually share these with the group
