The Government of France is awarding a

Special Medal to Veterans of the Second

World War Canadian Veterans of the 1944 campaign to

liberate France may be eligible to receive the

National Order of the Legion of Honour.

Since 2014, the Government of France has

been awarding their highest medal, the Legion

of Honour to veterans that participated in the

liberation of France from June 6, 1944 to August

30, 1944.

This is a very significant official award and it

is equal to the Order of Canada. It cannot be

purchased or ordered and is not given

posthumously. This coming year will mark the

75th Anniversary of D-day and the liberation of

France, and it is hoped that many more veterans

will receive this great honour. If you are a veteran

that fought in this campaign or directly supported

it, and it includes members of the Army, Navy,

Air Force and Merchant Navy, you may be

eligible, so please apply. There is no fee or cost

involved.

If you would like to find out more about this

award or would like to apply, please contact Mr.

Guy Black. I am a recipient of the Minister of

Veterans Affairs Commendation and I am an

unofficial volunteer who has been helping

veterans with their medal applications for the

past 4 years. Email:

Over 60 Club

A quarterly budget report was distributed to the Over 60 Club at our October 18th meeting. This report showed that our finances are in order and we have a steady stream of revenue. However, there is a warning that shows that we have declining revenue in both our spring and fall Raffle draws. This reduction in revenue is approximately $1000 in each of the two draws. This is a serious matter but can be easily corrected if we sell all the tickets in each raffle. The annual Remembrance period commences the last Friday in October and ends Immediately following Remembrance Day on November 11th. During this period the public and especially Legion members wear a poppy on the left side of their chest close to their heart. I encourage all Over 60 Club Members (You are Legion members) to wear a poppy from October 26 to November 11. Respectfully submitted

Stark and Co, a new band, entertained us this month and by the look of the dance floor everyone enjoyed them. Nice to try someone new for a change. A few members remembered to wear orange, but the highlight of the day was a visit from Darth Vader (Star Wars). Thanks to Russell Massey. “Good for you Russell”. November music will be performed by “The Country Silver Stars”. Octobers lucky winners were: Door Prize - Pauline Okum Bottle Draw – Ed Jackman Eugene Leniuk Meat Draw - Martha Fewchuk Pam Linklater Evelyn Goodbrandson Bill Hlady A big thank you to my ticket sellers: Lorraine & Eugene Leniuk, Jeanne Harvey & Linda Paluck. You make my job so easy. Sunday, October 28th was our successful Wine and Cheese party. It appeared we all had a good time with plenty of food; too much food and a couple of glasses of wine, non-alcoholic punch and tea. The gift exchange went over well also. Thanks to Bob Mundt, Edna Czorny, Louise Goodbrandson and Candice Fenton for their help getting things set up. We will be having our silent auction in December, if you have any donations please bring them to the November meeting. See you all Thursday, November 15th for our next dinner and dance.
