A Message From The President

Free StuffMike Moody has plenty of Panorama’s from the past two years if you are new to PCA and would like these old issues to catch up on your reading.

He also has factory 911 posters of the new 991 model looking for a good home. If you would like to help him clean out his garage, e-mail Mike at [email protected] and he can bring the items to the next meeting or club event.

The past month has seemed like a blur to me and my family. My daughter announced she was moving to Ketchikan AK to work for AT&T which caught the wife and I a bit off-guard. We decided we couldn't let her drive cross-country with her fo-fo dog pulling a U-Haul trailer, so we did the next best thing, we drove her and her fo-fo dog cross country pulling that trailer. Ran into a snow blizzard at Paducah KY so had to stop. Saw lots of corn fields through MO and KS, mountains laced with snow, ice and high winds in WY, dust storm in OR and finally lots of rain through the Snoquomish Pass into WA. Then onto a ferry for a 1-1/2 day ride into Ketchikan. Never doing that again!

Our 2nd annual Concours in the Park event is on May 17th at Edwin Warner Park, same location as last year. Please sign up (register) at www.clubregistration.net Create an account and then search for Musik Stadt events. Cost is $20 per car and includes one t-shirt per registration. More shirts will be available at the site at $20 each. If you don't pre-register on the website, you will still be allowed to register on-site that morning, but no shirt. More information is on our website at www.musikstadtpca.org

Registration opens April 1 for the Porsche Parade at Monterrey CA. I am not going this year, but I always get an invitation to the President's Reception so let me know if you are going, and I will give you the invitation. Parade's are a lot of fun and I plan to attend both Parade next year at French Lick IN and

the Escape later next year near the Badlands of SD. Shirley and I are also considering going to PCA Palooza in November at Eureka Springs AR.

If you ordered Randy's 911 book and haven't picked yours up yet, please come to our April meeting at Logan's Roadhouse in Cool Springs. If you haven't participated in a club event yet, please come out and enjoy our friendship. We had our end of month meeting at EurWerks garage on Charlotte Ave and had a wonderful breakfast and got to talk to Ed Rufo, fellow club member and co-owner along with his mechanics. They work on all types of European cars. I also met a club member who served in Viet Nam and Germany same time as me. Not the same units but we were both Army Corps of Engineers officers and have more to catch up on when we get a chance.

Gotta go so hope to see you April 8 at Logan's.

Mike

A Quick Note On Cars & Coffee

Cars and coffee gatherers

What started out as a few friends and co-workers gathering on Saturday mornings to enjoy coffee has rapidly grown into something that should be managed by an organization that can provide ongoing assistance to the event. And although up to now, I have continued to communicate the event to a few friends I have never claimed or claim to be responsible or the organizer for the gathering nor is this a Nissan sponsored event. Due to the rapid growth and likelihood that my emails will be forwarded to individuals I do not know, I will no longer submit emails announcing the events. Having stated this, the weekly event should continue as before provided participants and spectators do not act foolishly forcing the city or the theater to shut the event down.

One last note: Please mark your Cars & Coffee calendar for a one-off venue change. On Saturday, April 12th

the unofficial gathering will be at the Nissan North American Corporate headquarters in conjunction with the Middle Tennessee Z Club car show, Z-Attack. Nissan headquarters is located at 1 Nissan Way in Franklin just south of the intersection of Carothers Blvd. & Cool Springs Blvd. The C&C parking will be in the contractor parking lot on the left side of the building as you enter from Carothers Blvd. Please enter the Nissan campus from the traffic light at Nissan Way and Carothers and follow the signs around the main drive. The building Starbucks will be open and Nissan merchandise will also be on sale.

Porsche’s Return To The 24 Hours Of Le MansArticle By: Gregg Hardman

As a road racing fan I’m really excited that Porsche has once again committed to racing in the FIA’s World Endurance Championship (WEC) LMP1-H (Hybrid). June 2014 will mark Porsche’s return to The 24 Hours of Le Mans for an attempt at it’s 17th overall victory. So how will the new Porsche 919 Hybrid do against the more experienced and current champion Audi R18 e-tron quattros? Will they be able to keep up with the faster but less reliable team from Toyota? The last year Porsche competed for the overall victory was 1998. Porsche’s potential might best be understood by taking a look at it’s past, starting with a look at Porsche’s 1996 911 GT1.

!How did they try to do that?!

The 911 GT1 was introduced for the 1996 racing season at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The GT regulations (yes, Porsche attempted an overall win utilizing the GT regulations of the day) required that vehicles be based on an existing model and required the manufacturer to present one vehicle to the ACO (Automobile Club de l’Ouest) for type approval. The 911 GT1 used the front half of a 993 based 911 while the back half was more 962 endurance racer with the mid-mounted, 24 valve, water cooled engine acting as a stressed body member for the rear suspension. The engine displaced 3.2l with twin turbos and intercoolers.

Horsepower was in the 550-600hp range and the brake rotors were made of carbon. Based on a 911 indeed!

To ensure that the 911GT1 was legal to the letter of the regulations, Porsche homologated 25 street versions (StraBenversions) that were made available for sale to the public.

At the 1996 Le Mans two 911 GT1s were entered with a very experienced driver line up (#25 - Stuck, Boutsen, Wollek), (#26 - Wendlinger, Dalmas, Goodyear), both vehicles were very fast. Their lap times were competitive with the LMP1 category cars! Unfortunately a series of small mechanical issues kept both cars in the pits longer than expected. The cars finished second and third overall behind the TRW-Porsche of Joest Racing. Technically it was still a win for Porsche just not with one of their intended factory cars. The cars continued the season with victories at Brands Hatch, Spa, Belgium and China.

For the 1997 season, significant aerodynamic and chassis improvements were made to help against the new challengers from Mercedes-Benz; the 6.0L V-12 CLK GTRs. The front facia and headlamps were redesigned for improved aerodynamics simultaneously providing a new look similar to the new 996 version of

the 911. It was referred to as the Porsche 911 GT1 EVO. New naming convention or not, it was all for nothing as the monster V-12s from Mercedes Benz completely dominated the season. Let it be known that the CLKs were allowed entry into the GT category despite Mercedes Benz knowing that they would not have a vehicle for sale to the public for another 14 months! The good news of the season (If there really was any) was that the privateer Porsche team of Joest Racing won again able to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This was their second year in a row. The two factory 911 GT1 EVOs placed 5th and 8th.

With the sting of the 1997 season still fresh in their minds, Porsche set out to ensure they would experience victory in the 1998 season. The ’98 GT1s were redesigned to be race cars first. The 993 based steel front chassis was replaced with Porsche’s first carbon fiber monocoque saving weight and creating a stiffer chassis from which to attach the suspension. The wheelbase was extended, the six speed manual transmission was replaced with a sequential gearbox and the single plate clutch was updated to a triple plate design.

The changes seemed to make the difference for in 1998 Porsche was again victorious at Le Mans with their factory 911 GT1s! This was the 16th time Porsche had won the 24 Hours overall but it took three racing seasons to accomplish. The rest of the ’98 season was again dominated by the normally aspirated V-12 of the CLKs. Porsche withdrew from top level competition at the end of the 1998 season but continued to campaign the 911 in various GT races worldwide.

GT Racing 2013

Porsche introduced it’s new 991 RSR race car for the 2013 WEC (World Endurance Championship). This was Porsche’s most recent update to the 911 in GT racing. It replaced the 997 version 911 GT3 RSR which had become less competitive in recent years. The two car team was managed by Porsche AG Team Manthey. Olaf Manthey a former race car driver and team owner of Manthey Racing had successfully competed privately with Porsche 911s for many years at the 24 Hours of Nurburgring. The 991’s inaugural season proved to be very challenging with only one major highlight, a class win at Le Mans. !In 2014 Porsche introduced the 991 RSR to the United States in the Tudor United SportsCar Championship (USCC) with two cars managed by CORE Autosport. The #911 Porsche 911 RSR was victorious at the season opener 24 Hours of Daytona in the GTLM class with drivers Nick Tandy, Richard Lietz, and Patrick Pilet. The #912

sister car with drivers Patrick Long, Jorg Bergmeister, and Michael Christensen experienced mechanical issues finishing 54th. However, at the second race of the season, the 12 Hours of Sebring, #912 was able to redeem itself with a GTLM class win.

The Future

For 2014, the FIA’s WEC LMP1-H rules for endurance racing promote energy efficiency which fits in nicely with Porsche’s current Porsche Intelligent Performance marketing campaign. The playing field will be equalized by regulating the total energy used per lap on each vehicle during the race. Gasoline and diesel fuel will be metered via flow rate based on the amount of electrical energy a team chooses to consumed per lap, 2MJ, 4MJ, 6MJ, or 8MJ.

Porsche’s new LMP1 919 Hybrid: • 2.0L Single turbo V-4 gasoline engine

driving the rear wheels.• Two separate energy recovery systems.

1. Thermal energy from the exhaust will be recovered from a generator on the turbocharger.

2. Kinetic energy recovered during braking. This generator and motor will temporarily power the front wheels.

• 8MJ (Mega Joules) of hybrid energy usable per lap at Le Mans.

• 4.64 liter of fuel per lap at Le Mans.• 870Kg minimum weight.

• Drivers: Brendan Harley, Marc Lieb, Timo Bernhard, Romain Dumas, Neel Jani and Mark Webber.

!There’s no guarantee Porsche will win in LMP1-H at Le Mans this year, in fact they’re probably an long shot. However, we do know from recent history that Porsche is capable of winning with new cars in their first season. We also know that the new 919 Hybrid has been testing since June of 2012 when it was first revealed to the public. I myself can’t wait to see how they do.
