Parenting By Grace

What makes Christian Parenting DISTINCTLY

Christian?

[4] Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. (Ephesians 6:1-4 ESV)

[20] Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. [21] Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged. (Colossians 3:20-21 ESV)

Both verses touch on what issue?

Anger = Danger

There is enough inherent anger in the parent / child relationship, so don’t add

to it needlessly.

- The Key Relationship in the Family is that of Husband and Wife.

- The Raising of Children Requires the Involvement of Both Parents

As parents we must be intentional about

parenting!!

MODEL biblical thinking and priorities to your kids

MODEL the importance of God’s Word and God’s people

FIRST MYTH: Quality time is more important than Quantity TIME

SECOND MYTH : Anger = Action

GRACE DOES NOT FORBID giving directions, promises, corrections, and warnings

-How does the incarnation change the way you speak to your children?

-What about the resurrection?

-Have you helped them understand the ascension and the intercession of Jesus and his return?

“moms need to constantly pray” or

“men need to constantly pray”

DISCERNMENT QUESTIONS:

Does this simply call for management?

Now that the situation has calmed down, do I have an opportunity to nurture his soul with the gospel?

Is this the time to train her in how to apply what Jesus has already done for her?

Do I need to correct her attitudes or actions so that they are more in line with the good news? Gal 2:14ff

Should I remind him of God’s promises, either of blessing for faith or of punishment for unbelief?

Finally is this just a time to pray and ask God how the gospel applies to my own heart?

As we train our children we must be able to recognize the distinction between childish irresponsibility and direct disobedience.

Remember that we need the same thing our kids need – a Savior and the message of good news that Jesus has accomplished for us what we can’t do on our own.
