The Face of Chelmsford Magazine Now Has A New Team...

Here I ask Jane Holloway about her time with the magazine......

Hi Jane. Well done for creating such a great maga-zine!! What made you decide to start the magazine in the first place? Chelmsford needed an upbeat positive magazine which focussed on local companies, events and people! The magazine is always packed with articles from many of our contributors from different parts of the world.

How has the feedback been? Have people taken to the magazine well?We have had a great response from the magazine from

day one, with a loyal following of readers.

What has been your highlight with it?There’s been loads of really fun stuff, it’s been really great mixing with all of the local companies, meeting the business owners, getting an inside view of things. Probably the best/most fun was the behind the scenes features that I did especially learning how to make sausages and milking a cow!

Will you miss it? Yes, it’s all been so much fun!

What is next for you? Many, many things! I’ve run many different businesses and love setting up and starting new things... so watch this space...

Do you have any words of advice for the new editor (Me!!)?Speak to people, get out and about locally, see what’s going on, get the readers and local busi-ness involved, make sure everyone has your number & email to keep you up to date with what’s going on and everything new.

Do you have a goodbye message for the readers?I’d like to thank the readers for all your great feedback, ideas and positive comments. I have really enjoyed working with local business owners, I’d also really like to thank all of our con-tributors for all their hard work, Sarah Tucker, Brian Biro, Richard from Mustard, James from Unique Results, this list goes on. It’s been a great ride, long may it continue!

On behalf of the new team, I’d like to thank Jane and her team for handing over the magazine to me and would like to wish her well in her all her new exciting ventures!!

ARTICLEHealth Green Tea Extract and Weight Loss

Green tea has always been known to have several health benefits, but who knew that it could contribute to weight loss as well?

A recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition show that green tea extract can increase metabolism and fat oxidation of the body. In theory, scientists believe that the weight loss benefits of green tea extracts are due to their caffeine content but the results of the study show other-wise as they discovered that green tea extracts have weight loss benefits beyond that of caffeine.

In their study, the researchers administered alone the same amount of caffeine as that in green tea extracts but found that it did not make any significant changes in the body’s overall energy expenditure. This led them to conclude that green tea extracts have ingredients in them that actively interact with each other, promoting increased metabolism and fat oxidation that lead to weight loss.

Further findings indicated that a certain compound found in green tea extracts might be the ingredient that causes weight loss. These green tea extract compounds called Flavonoids may alter the way the body uses norepinephrine, a hormone that monitors how calories are burned. When flavonoids interact with other green tea extract ingredients, more calories are burned thus contributing to weight loss.

Another ingredient that actively contributes to the weight loss benefits of green tea extracts is the compound catechin polyphenols. These compounds also interact with other green tea extract ingredients in order to promote weight loss by fat burning and thermogenesis (a process of losing energy by daytime heat).

The great thing about the weight loss benefit of green tea extracts is that it does not have any adverse side-effects. Unlike other herbal products like ephedra and prescription drugs for obesity, green tea extract does not increase the speed of heart rates or raise blood pressure. In this regard, green tea extract is an effective and safer alternative to other weight loss products which may cause harm to the user.

The study conducted by the University of Geneva on the weight loss benefit of green tea extract implicated that green tea extract can also help thyroid patients. According to dietitian Lynn Moss, M.S., R.D., green tea extract is a healthier choice for people with thyroid who may be too sensitive to stimulants. Green tea extract can promote weight loss by increasing metabolism without over stimulating the adrenal glands.

A common beverage all throughout Asia, green tea has recently gained popularity in the West. Further researches were conducted to identify other health benefits of green tea extracts aside from weight loss. It was found that certain green tea extract compounds can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, and even ulcers.

How To Deal With Dry Skin ProblemsWhen you are dealing with dry skin, finding the right dry skin remedy becomes vitally important. Luckily, there are a wide variety of different home remedies for you to choose from when it comes to remedying dry skin. The following is a brief selection of some of the options you have available for you in terms of dry skin remedies. If you want to get the most out of your skin care regimen, then you need to be willing to combine different dry skin remedies until you find the combination that is driving the

best possible results.

Determine whether or not hydration issues are playing a role in your dry skin issues. If you are dehydrated, then you are going to have problems relating to dry skin as well. If you are not dehydrated but you are dealing with dry skin, then just drinking more water is not likely going to help you. If you’re not already drinking between 7 and 8

glasses of water a day, now is the time to start.

If your skin is dehydrated, then one of the most natural dry skin remedies is to soak your skin in water. You can soak your skin in lukewarm water for a period of fifteen minutes. Avoid hot water, and stay toward the room-temperature end of things. You should not be doing this every day however as the rule of thumb about soaking your

body is to bathe less and use water that is cooler in order to remedy dry skin.

-Another home skin care remedy for dry skin is to follow every bath by applying mois-turiser in order to lubricate your skin properly. The moisture that you soak into your skin tends to evaporate. If you bathe a lot, then using a moisturizing product is going to be even more important because the moisturizing product is going to help you

keep the water in.

The reason for applying a moisturizer product is not simply to put oils back into the skin. Instead, you should understand that dryness on the skin is a function of loss of water rather than necessarily loss of oil. Think about how much easier it is to exfoli-ate or cut your fingernails or toenails following a bath. This is an excellent example of what happens to your skin when you’ve bathed. When you apply a moisturizer after you take a bath, you can keep the water in your skin rather than letting it evaporate,

and this will prevent skin dryness.

Combining these and other dry skin remedies is the best way to overcome your dry skin. Returning your skin to its former health and beauty will take work, but it’ll be worth the effort in the end when your skin is properly healthy and nourished and looking beau-tiful and looking young. Keep the aforementioned tips in mind and you can and will achieve better,

healthier and better nourished skin.

To many, it is an important accessory and to others a complete joke. The wig has always been an important item for those that want to conceal their lack of hair, although it can be difficult to make your new ‘hair’ look authentic, and the look crosses the line of embarrassment when it falls off or out of place. But who invented the head rug?

The early use of wigs date back to the ancient Egyptian times, when fake hair was used to protect people with bald heads from the hot sun, and was used in a similar manner by Romans, Greeks, and Assyrians, amongst oth-ers. The look never really caught on, though, until the ‘Tudor pe-riod’ in English history, where royalty using wigs to display extrav-agant ‘tall’ or long hairstlyes (and to protect from headlice) prompted many male members of the public to follow suit, with the term ‘wig’ added to the English language in 1675. Over the years, the use of wigs and hairpieces worldwide would then develop with the styles of the times, eventually reaching the modern approaches and uses that we see now.

Today, wigs have developed not only into a means for peo-ple with a lack of hair to look as though they have some, as part of a job (e.g. acting or ‘traditional’ court judges) or even as a fashion accessory, like ‘extentions’, but also as a means of fan-cy dress at parties, leading to ‘party wigs’, that are generally much more colourful and bizarre, and are often used to help ‘complete a look’, with costumes such as ‘Elvis’ or ’70’s Afro’.

A concern for some wig-wearers, though, whether serious or rec-reational, is what they are made of, as it can be a big issue for those that only want ‘nice’ materials touching their body. Although modern wigs are made to begin life clean and usable, some po-tential wearers could be put off by the fact that to be made to look realistic, their wig is likely to have been made out of one of, or a combination of, the following materials:-Wool, Feathers, Recycled Human Hair, Synthetic Materials, Animal Hair (Horses or Buffalo),Yak Hair (most commonly used)

A present that everyone is guaranteed to love is a photograph printed on can-vas. It is a unique gift item that touches the heart of the recipient. An example is a wedding anniversary, birthday or christening. Canvas photos are a gift That can last for a lifetime. Photos printed onto canvas can be much larger than the original photo.

There are also special effects and modifications you can do with your photos. For instance, you can get your favourite photo turned into a watercolour or sepia tone. Have the background or red eye removed as well. The framed canvas photo can be put on any wall of your home. It adds a warm, personal touch to the house.

In canvas photo printing, your photos are transferred onto canvas with the help of digital art technology. Photos onto canvas not only look great, but they also last for many years.

Cause and Effect – It’s NOT Rocket Science!

May I be blunt? If you have decided to read on then I take that as a yes.

This is not intended to be a rant, or offensive, or personal, or harsh but merely a wake-up call.We all have a fundamental choice to make in life, me, you and everyone we collectively know and that is if we CHOOSE to live at CAUSE or EFFECT.

It’s a choice; a mindset shift, a paradigm realignment. Call it what you wish but it is essentially a way that we decide to look at our lives and the stuff that happens to us, both good and bad.

I chose to live at CAUSE about 5 years ago – and it wasn’t easy. That essentially means that whatever I generate into my experience, whatever circumstances I create within my world, whatever success I experience and also when the sh*t hits the fan in a major way – I am responsible. I am responsible for my actions, my thoughts, my feel-ings, the way I react to people and events around me, my successes, my failures, the lessons I learn (or don’t learn) and ultimately what I become and how I spend my time on planet Earth – I AM RESPONSI-BLE FOR ME.What’s the alternative?

That someone or something else is responsible for my life and the way it turns out? That I am bobbing my way through life like a hollow barrel in the mid-dle of the ocean being tossed and turned between waves without any conscious thought or control of my own direction?

Many people I meet have NOT DECIDED to live at CAUSE. Their lack of DECISION IS A DECISION in its own right and they are living at EFFECT.To live at EFFECT means choosing to believe that THINGS JUST HAP-PEN TO YOU. You are not in control of much. Essentially your life is not your responsibility. Your health and fitness were handed to you geneti-cally. The habits you have were handed to you by your parents and you are powerless to change them. Your economic situation is handed to you by your lineage, the government or the current economy. You were either gifted with a good education or not (after all, learning stops at 16 or 18 doesn’t it?) You had no strong role models growing up so can never achieve much as an adult.

For most relatively intelligent people the above paragraph will sound like utter CRAP! But I hear variations of living at EFFECT every week to

a much lesser but no less important degree.I can’t train regularly because of BLAH BLAH BLAH Excuse, excuse, excuse!

INTERVIEWWellbeing

INTERVIEW WITH JOANNE BUSHNELL

Zumba is a Latin inspired dance fitness programme created by a dancer and choreographer Alberto Perez from Co-lombia during the 1990’s. It involves various dance and aerobic elements that include hip-hop, samba, salsa merengue and mambo, to name a few!! In the 1990’s, Alberto Perez had forgot-ten to take his music to the class he was teaching and decided to use the tapes from his car! The tapes consisted tradi-tional Latin salsa and merengue music, so he improvised! The class went very well and Zumba was born!I caught up with a Zumba instructor, Joanne Bushnell to ask her a few ques-tions…

Hi Joanne, what got you interested in Zumba?I was already a fitness instructor and I taught aerobics, legs, bums and tums and I teach aqua as well and I work up at Virgin Active and there was a lady who had done a course and I saw her doing a demonstration downstairs on the gym floor and it just looked really interesting, so I researched it and found that Zum-ba seemed to be the way forward, so I booked myself onto the course.

Why do you think Zumba has captured the public’s imagination so much?Because it’s fun and as they say, ditch the workout and join the party!! The mu-sic is motivating and a lot of people come out smiling!! I love teaching aerobics, but this is so different and each track has different routines so it doesn’t get boring. I make up the routines myself. I

don’t always use the Zumba music, I look through iTunes and when I hear a track I like, like for example, Rock Party Anthems, as long as you use the Zumba rhythm and you stick to that, then that’s fine and you can use the music you like.

As a form of exercise, is Zumba any better than say Step or Aerobics?Personally I think it is because it’s what they call intermittent training, so you’ve got times when you have a lot of cardio going on, then we will stand and do sta-tionary moves and lots of hip circles for your waist , so your metabolism fluctu-ates , so it’s very good at burning calo-ries.

How many classes do you teach a week?I do 18 classes a week, that’s Zumba plus water aerobics as well. My family keep telling me that I over exercise, but it’s work and I enjoy it and that’s why I like to keep it all fresh and keep updat-ing songs because you can get bored of it yourself. I just love it!!

Zumba is predominantly for women, do you agree and why do you think that is?No I don’t think so, I think men are a bit

16 health | wellbeing | style | retail | food | living | travel | family | prosperity

Page 17: September/October 2011 The Face of Chelmsford Magazine

INTERVIEWWellbeing

more self-conscious, however, I do have men come to my classes, not many though! You probably get say about 50 people and 1 man. I had a guy come and do a class with me for a while actually and he had done salsa before and he loved being among all the women. I think that because it is manly women, men don’t like to come. I don’t think it should just be for women, bearing in mind that the crea-tor was a man!!

Do you think Zumba is a passing fad?I hope not!! I don’t think so because it’s been going on for too long now and the classes are picking up and up, so it would be such a shame. I think as long as the instructors keep their classes fresh with new moves and routines it should keep going.

.Apart from Zumba, are there any oth-er exercise crazes coming up that you know about? To be honest, I’m so focused on the Zum-ba, so I haven’t heard of anything. I’m go-ing to be doing a Zumba toning course, which is still the Zumba, but with weights as well. There is a course coming up in London in October which I will put myself on. Riverside, in Chelmsford, have asked for me to do classes there as there is a demand for it. So I’ll do the course and hopefully we will launch it in January.

Zumba is an all over body exercise. What if someone just wanted to work on a certain part of their body, is Zum-ba for them?It would be, depending on what part of their body they wanted to work on. If they wanted to work more on their abs and their waist, then the hip circles will help, but if they didn’t want to do high impact

moves, then they would have to adapt it themselves. People will come in and say they have bad knees, hips or whatever and I say to them, adapt it, don’t do the jumps and work at your own ability and that puts people’s minds at ease and they don’t feel so pressured. But really, Zumba is an all over workout. As long as people enjoy themselves and they are lov-ing the music, sweat a bit, then job done!!

Is there an age limit for doing Zumba?Definitely not! I’ve got ladies who come to my classes who are in their 70’s, they en-joy it! Even my Mum comes along and she has got herself the Zumba trousers and tops!! The thing is, if you don’t exercise as you get older, you can become a little bit stale. The ladies in my classes love it, they do what they can do!! Definitely no age restriction anyone can do it. I’m go-ing to be starting a family Zumba for kids aged 8 years and up to come along with their parents. I do kids parties which I in-corporate a lot of the Zumba tracks and kids love it!!

I would like to thank Joanne Bushnell for taking time out of her very busy schedule to talk about Zumba.

So there you go, why not find a Zumba class near you! As they say…Ditch the workout and come to the party!!!!

ARTICLEFood Virtual Winemakers

Raise a Toast with Their WineAfter 10 months of deliberation, cogitation and frenzied voting, the first ever Virgin Virtual Win-emakers turned out for a night of celebration on Friday at the beautiful Italian Cultural Institute in Belgrave Square, London, to raise a toast to their efforts in creating a new wine, as a community, via the power of the internet.

This pioneering project is the brainchild of the world’s leading specialist online wine retailer Virgin Wines and was launched back in October. The premise was to bring together a group of impas-sioned wine lovers in the creation of a new wine – one that didn’t yet exist - and actively play a part in the decisions that shaped its future through a series of democratic votes.

The votes covered decisions in the vineyard and winery, the wine’s name and even the label. All of this interaction was delivered through a dedicated online platform, allowing anyone - wherever they were located - to get involved. The wine was made by Pallavicini, one of Italy’s foremost family-owned wine estates, active in their native Lazio for over four centuries.

Speaking at the event, Jay Wright, Managing Director of Virgin Wines said, “We’re here not only to bring delicious wines to our customers, but to make wine more exciting and fun. As an online business, it made complete sense to me to unleash the power of the web to take wine to a new level… a level where people can really engage with it and work towards a common goal. That’s how the Virgin Virtual Winery came about.”

Friday’s celebrations marked the culmination of 10 months’ hard work and a unique experience for the Virtual Winemakers to hob-nob with viticulturist Mauro de Angelis and Managing Director Claudio Latagliata of Pallavicini, who had flown in from Rome especially for the occasion. Along with Consultant Winemaker Jake Woodhouse, Claudio and Mauro were keen to chat about the wine and show off the finished product.

Mr Wright added “Tonight marks the realisation of a very special dream and more than 50 of our Virtual Winemakers joined us to taste their wine – a wine that they can go home and say that they helped to make.”

The wine in question is called “Cordis Vinum” and will be available to purchase from Virgin Wines www.virginwines.co.uk in September. It is made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot. Further plans are already afoot for a second Virtual Winery endeavour, this time based in Australia and due to be launched in the lead-up to Christmas. Watch this space!

THE ELECTRICAL SHOP LIMITED 76-80 Baddow Road, Chelmsford, Essex CM2 7PL T: 01245 352585

“Powering the way to a brighter future” The strangest news story going around in these cash-strapped times is that the UK is experiencing something of an unseemly consumer rush on light bulbs. Yes, light bulbs of all things. The old incandescent filament-style bulbs are selling out in their hundreds, leaving shelves empty all over the country. Why? Well, it’s because they’ve been banned. The brightest 100 watt ones are going first, to be followed by all the other wattages (60 watt is my favorite, but then I’m a bit of a traditionalist) over the next three years to 2012. The ban prevents the manufacture and import of incandescent bulbs into the EU but not the sale of existing stocks.

It’s all part of moves by the European Union to protect the environment. Their new regulations have set minimum energy efficiency targets for bulbs, meaning that the old-fashioned filament sort is out, and we’re going to have the modern energy-efficient variety. The EU claims that this legislation will save the rough equivalent of the energy consumption of Romania.

There are many concerns being raised by various groups of disabled people, who say that the demise of the humble incandescent bulb will adversely affect them - from partially sighted people who rely on the brightness of 100 watt bulbs, which cannot be equaled with the energy-efficient alternatives, to those with conditions such as epilepsy, migraines and lupus, where it’s claimed that the more modern bulbs can worsen their symptoms.

At The Electrical Shop we still carry stock of most incandescent bulbs and as the major retailers have dropped them from their ranges we have easy access to the huge stock piles that were made prior to the ban. We also have alternatives to the normal energy saving fluorescent lamps which many people dis-like. These come in the form of halogen lamps being fitted in normal bulbs and are a great if not better alternative to the incandescent bulb.

The Best of BritishTHE LANCASHIRE HOT POT!

Having hit the end of summer, now we find ourselves in the cooler months where British food really comes into it’s own in my opinion. Hot Pots, Pies, Roast Dinners and Broths and Stews.

Finding two cooks who will agree on what should go in a Lancashire Hot-Pot is about as easy as find-ing a straight-talking politician, there is even discussion as to weather it should have lamb or beef. Most commonly Lamb is used and this is how we make it too. Lancashire Hot-Pot is not some delicate concoction formulated with precise instructions as to method and ingredients, it is good pleasant and hearty fodder. The dish is quick to prepare, left to cook gently for hours without needing attention. And it is filling and cheap using traditional meat, mutton, best-end of neck, middle neck, or even scrag end. To minimise wastage you can even use the left over Sunday roast lamb.

The dish is assembled with a layer of fairly thickly sliced potatoes followed by some meat, then usually thinly sliced onions, this construction seasoned with salt and then repeated until a layer of potatoes forms the top, the whole of this having water, enough to prevent it drying out in cooking, and leaving a tasty gravy at the end.

Lamb is excellent at the moment and in abundance full of flavour.

The Mustard Hot Pot was served with seasonal vegetables (carrots, cabbage and courgettes) which were lovely and crisp and lightly buttered - The Hot Pot was full of flavour with browned potatoes on top and tender pieces of diced lamb in a rich gravy good enough to drink!!

Leaflet Printing The Most Cost Effective Way To Advertise Today

Everyone is in a tough place right now, with the ongoing recession and people tightening their belts. This holds true for both the general public and compa-nies both small and large.

But even with a suffering economy, life goes on and sales are their to be made. Money is still being spent by consumers and business owners alike, and the most effective way to have a piece of this revenue is by advertising your message to prospective clients.

The most cost effective and proven ways to advertise today is leaflet printing and distribution.

Using Leaflet Printing For AdvertisingSince the inception of the printing press, leaflet printing has been a big part of businesses marketing and advertising plans. This is because printing leaflets is a relatively cheap and efficient way to spread the word about your business, special offer or event.

So we know that leaflets are a prominent marketing source, what is the best way to start promoting your business, and which printer to use? A good start-ing place is Internet. based printers. You can simply visit the website, choose from a wide selection of leaflet sizes such as A6, A5, A4 or Folded Leaflets

Their are many good printing companies online that will design and print your leaflets. You not only save money when using an established online print com-pany, but you also get a friendly and helpful service. Placing orders is easy, uploading your artwork a breeze, and the free delivery comes to you in just a few days!

So while everyone else is bemoaning the state of the economy, take advan-tage of the Internet and cheap leaflet printing to stretch your budget that little bit further and reap the rewards that effective leaflet promotion will bring.

GET SPORTY IN CHELMSFORDWith the news being filled with stories about how obese the British public are, from babies up to middle age, we all seem to be out of shape and unhealthy. Now may be a good time to take a look in the mirror and decide

on some positive action.

You may hate the idea of the gym, pumping iron or endless hours on a static exercise bike. But have you con-sidered taking up a sport? You may be surprised to find that you can participate in a whole range of sports that are all based within Chelmsford. From Canoeing to baton twirling, there is a sport available for all ages.

For the less mobile you could try bowls, angling or yoga. It does not have to be health related either, as sports make a great hobby and new way of making friends

After having a quick check, I found the following sports that all have a club within our town:-

If like me, you have spent years trying dif-ferent diets to lose weight and find that you can’t live without eating your favourite things, and even worse, as soon as the diet stops, the weight STILL comes back, then this article is for you!! Since having my four children, my weight crept up and up and up and the more weight I put on, the more depressed I be-came. I didn’t like what I saw in the mirror and I was even told by a fitness instructor that I would struggle losing my tummy be-cause I have had four children. The last straw came when three different people asked me when my next baby was due, because it looked like I didn’t have long to go, and someone gave up their seat on the train so that I could take the weight off my legs. I was not happy...I wasn’t preg-nant, I was just fat. Over the years I’ve tried various diets, in-cluding Weight Watchers, Rosemary Con-nolly and the Atkins diet. With each one, I started off losing a little bit of weight, but I was restricted to what I could eat. No more chocolate, no more fry ups, no more takeaways!

These diets didn’t last very long with me and I gave up...Hence I put the weight back on. Counting calories, checking points and cutting out certain foods just wasn’t doing it for me. they have helped lots of people to acheive they goals, they just

didn’t work for me. After Christmas I was a size 16 in clothes, heading towards an 18. It was time to shake myself into changing the way I looked. No one else could do this for me, I had to do it myself!

April 2011, my Hus-band signed me up to the local gym. I was so determined to lose weight, so I asked about the classes they run. Me being in a group with other people who want to lose weight and get fit meant I wasn’t alone.

I started using the gym, the swimming

pool, sauna and doing Zumba, and found that I thoroughly

enjoyed it! The instructor was so much fun to follow, and others around me were all enjoying it too!! After the first month, I plucked up the courage to weigh myself and found that amazingly I had lost weight. When I first started exercising in April, I was 12 stone, after just one month, I was down to 10st 12lb. The best thing was, I hadn’t given up my favourite foods, I’m now just careful with what I eat

I decided to cut down my bread intake. I didn’t want to cut it out of my life, so if I

have toast for breakfast, I won’t have a sandwich for lunch, or if I plan to have

bread with my spaghetti bolagnaise, then I won’t have it earlier!! I eat either muesli, or cereal

5 / 6 times a week and

then for lunch I can have a sand-

wich or motzos (gi-ant cream cracker!!)

with pate or cheese. I’m quite enjoying the

odd salad for lunch too!!! Then I don’t eat anything

else until my dinner! Be-cause I’m now exercising

much more than I was, I’m not hungry between meals! If I do find that I’m a bit peckish, I eat friut and drink more water!! If I fancy a fry up for breakfast, I make sure I don’t have any lunch. The same if we go out to town with the kids and pop into McDonald’s, I just make

sure that I’m good the rest of the day until I have dinner. I make sure we don’t have dinner any later than 6pm, so that by the time it’s bedtime, I’m not going to bed on a full tummy!

If I’ve been good all week, (No fry ups, no McDonald’s etc) I will treat myself to a lovely bar of fruit and nut chocolate that I share with my husband when the kids have gone to bed!! The best thing is....I’m STILL losing weight!!!

In June/July, I was layed up in bed with sciatica, so I had to miss 4 weeks off Zum-ba and the gym. I missed the exercise so much.I now do a Zumba class 3 times a week and try to go swimming and use the sauna after each class and I go for lots more walks now too! I am having such a good time and I am now 10st 1lb and I’m now in the size 12/14 clothes range!!

The moral of this story is to get some ex-ercise each week and be careful through-out the day/week with what you eat and then you don’t have to give up your favour-ite foods AND you can still lose weight!!!

Losing weight for me has been the result of changing my lifestyle permanently!, Find what works for you and that you can hap-pily live with!

Good luck!!

And so I went to Thorpe Park. Hot heady heat amidst rides that had names of tortuous horror films (Saw), condom sounding rides (Colossus - or is that just my mind?), and weapons of natural destruction (Tidal Wave, which perhaps should be called Tsunami. Or perhaps not). Then there were others called Rush, Vortex, No way out (I identified a bit with this one as it was in the dark), and Nemesis Inferno which the boys I took thought was 'the best'. I think they should call a ride 'Ouch'. I'm sure 'Brain Damage' would attract a following.

I was surrounded by teenagers. Fat ones, emaciated ones, join the dots spotty ones, ones who practiced the Victoria 'I am too cool to smile' Beckham pout, and others who were cool but didn't know it. Many others who thought they were, but weren't. I am so pleased I am not a teenager again. Anyone who ever angst for these times should go to Thorpe Park.

It reminds me of the insecurities of that age. Of wanting to be noticed and not wanting to be noticed. Of wanting to stand out and not wanting to stand out. Of wanting to be something, anything other than who you are, under the guise of gaining any experience, good, bad and ugly. I know quite a few forty somethings that are still going through this phase or have re entered it.

I didn't go on the rides. Instead I waited in the 'shops' the riders had to walk through at the end of each roller coaster. In one they sold 'victims blood slime' next to sweetly smiling teddy bears with Thorpe Park emblazoned in embroidered yellow on little blue jumpers. It made the bears look creepy and sinister. Then there were the voodoo doll key rings (without the pins), mini marshmallow chain saws (they looked like chain saws), little statues of a man with a very white face and blood red mouth on a tricycle which is something to do with the film Saw, but I've never seen it so didn't get the point and rather than be impressed I just thought them very strange. There were a lot there so don't know if they had sold any. Then there were huge medals for going on each of the rides. You could get three for £10. And loads and loads of jelly sweets and other brightly coloured sugar immersed gelatin filled crap.

I sat there in the sun, and kept thinking of what the place reminded me of. I've been to Alton Towers and Universal Studios in Florida and Phantasialand in Germany, and other 'lands' with rides of this scale, but this one was different. As I sat watching everyone scream their heads off, and praise them-selves afterwards for not throwing up and still be-ing able to smile, speak, see, walk - I breathed in the whiff of pizza, pasta, curry, chinese, fish 'n chips, mexican all at once - and I thought of the story of Pinnochio and the land he ended up in when he started to turn into an ass. I left with stealth, as the ride Stealth was closed.

ArticleLivingWedding Photography in the RAIN!

You can plan most things for a wedding with a good degree of certainty but in the UK, and especially in Scotland, you can’t know in advance what the weather will do. Providing your wedding ceremony and re-ception venue are indoors the weather shouldn’t provide that many problems – but indoor photography can be restrictive and not representative of the day. No doubts about it - there are moments during the big day when you would like to be outside.

Natural light and the charm of your surroundings at that very special venue you hired - at great expense - will be important elements of your wedding photographs. If you have hired a venue in a Scottish castle with views out over mountains and sea or at a country house hotel with its beautifully manicured gardens then you will want to capture them in your photographs.

An experienced photographer will have a “Plan A” and a “Plan B” (bad weather). And (s)he’ll be prepared for both plans to go “out of the window”! Your photographer should have researched the location and know which locations to use in any weather.

On what is merely a grey, cloudy day a skilled wedding photographer will know how to make the best of the light. In fact for outdoor portraits this is the best sort of light – beautiful even light that’s kind to any face. Stormy skies add drama and a professional will know how to balance artificial light but retain that drama in the sky (just one more argument against leaving the job to friends and amateurs, but that’s another wedding photography story!) More problems present themselves when the rain starts to fall and the wind starts to blow, and for the bride, problems for her dress and hairdo in particular. There are several options available to the wedding couple if the weather should turn against them and their wedding photographer’s best efforts.

One obvious strategy to insure against heavy rain and having to be photographed in interiors indistinguish-able from a thousand others wedding venues is to choose a venue where exteriors protected by a high roof are available. Think pergolas, bandstands and canopied doorways. Photographers love doorways; the light falls off quickly and that beautiful soft light is back.

Indoors by a window is the next best thing. Window light makes for dramatic images – a large window with a wood panelled or stone wall and all sorts of possibilities open up. Photography is about light and this setting is wonderful.

In the absence of roofed exteriors it may make sense to have large white umbrellas on hand – I always carry several. Apart from protecting against the rain they diffuse the top light and reflect back the bottom light – soft light again! You may even want to bring your own umbrellas in other colours to match the bridesmaid’s dresses. Plenty of clips and pins for holding hair in place and battening down gowns won’t go amiss either. The wind can be used to our advantage too – with a bit of cover that natural wind machine can be useful!

The employment of umbrellas can dovetail nicely with another important strategy for wedding photograph success in inclement weather. That strategy is, in three words, “Go with it!” Embracing the conditions can not merely save the day – it may make the day. You can’t change the weather but you can change your attitude to it. A strong gale, a refreshing shower or even snow will make your wedding day a memorable one and add to the fun. I’ve seen the Bride arrive in “wellies” and it’s a great photograph. Who knows - perhaps that awful weather will forever be as-sociated with happiness? by Leo Friel

MemoriesRichard, my husband, never really talked a lot about his time in Viet Nam, other than he had been shot by a sniper. However, he had a rather grainy, 8 x 10 black and white photo he had taken at a USO show of Ann Margret with Bob Hope in the background that was one of his treasures.

A few years ago, Ann Margret was doing a book signing at a local bookstore. Richard wanted to see if he could get her to sign the treasured photo so he arrived at the bookstore at 12 o’clock for the 7:30 signing.

When I got there after work, the line went all the way around the bookstore, circled the park-ing lot, and disappeared behind a parking garage. Before her appearance, bookstore employ-ees announced that she would sign only her book and no memorabilia would be permitted.

Richard was disappointed, but wanted to show her the photo and let her know how much those shows meant to lonely GI’s so far from home. Ann Margret came out looking as beauti-ful as ever and, as second in line, it was soon Richard’s turn.

He presented the book for her signature and then took out the photo. When he did, there were many shouts from the employees that she would not sign it. Richard said, “I understand. I just wanted her to see it.”

THE STORY

health | wellbeing | style | retail | food | living | travel | family | prosperity30

She took one look at the photo, tears welled up in her eyes and she said, “This is one of my gentlemen from Viet Nam and I most certainly will sign his photo. I know what these men did for their country and I always have time for ‘my gentle-men.”

With that, she pulled Richard across the table and planted a big kiss on him. She then made quite a to-do about the bravery of the young men she met over the years, how much she admired them, and how much she appreciated them. There weren’t too many dry eyes among those close enough to hear. She then posed for pictures and acted as if he were the only one there.

Page 31: September/October 2011 The Face of Chelmsford Magazine

Later at dinner, Richard was very quiet. When I asked if he’d like to talk about it, my big, strong hus-band broke down in tears... “That’s the first time anyone ever thanked me for my time in the Army.” he said.

That night was a turning point for him. He walked a little straighter and, for the first time in years, was proud to have been a Vet. I’ll never forget Ann Margret for her graciousness and how much that small act of kindness meant to my husband.

I now make it a point to say ‘Thank you’ to every person I come across who served in our Armed Forces. Freedom does not come cheap and I am grateful for all those who have served their country.Author Unknown

Note: I have searched to find out if this story is true, and every indication, including a response from Ann Margret’s representatives state that yes, this is a true story. Unfortunately I cannot confirm with certainty who the author is.

Common Solar Power Systems for Homes

Are you one of those homeowners who are dreaming of having solar powered homes? Perhaps you’re already familiar with DIY solar power kits. The idea may sound inviting however a lot of people are scared to create their own solar power system. Solar power is usually available in three kinds. You too can use any of these powers gradually.

People usually associate solar power with solar panels. But you see, solar panels are not the only source of power. You can choose among the several components known today. Take a look at these solar components that you can use at home.

1. Solar cookers – this is already a common way of using solar power. Some people may find the cooker slow in terms of performance but if you’re not rushing, you can surely cook on time. You can use the solar cooker to roast, bake, and boil. This is best suited for a small family with a maximum of 5 members. You will no longer need fuel since you will be using only sun-shine. There are also no emissions or smoke. 2. Solar thermal systems – this is an ambitious system but it’s simply an update of the oldest known consumer technology. In this system, you will need solar panels. From the panels, the sun’s heat is transferred to a water tank. The water in the tank is heated. Your home can also be heated by putting some pipes. This was already available back in the 80s but it was rather expensive. Today, the thermal systems are more affordable and efficient. 3. Solar generators – many homeowners are now utilizing solar generators for alterna-tive power. The generator makes use of photovoltaic cells where the power inverter is hooked. You can use the solar generators for your lighting system at home. The electrical power is stored in the batteries and you can use it later. By using solar generators, it would be possible to run some electrical appliances. If you have $200, you can already create the generator.

A wealth of information can be found on the net if you simply do your homework and look for useful info. By purchasing the DIY kits, you can create your own solar power system. There are also instructional materials available online that provide step by step instructions on how to create solar panels or cells. It would help a lot if you conduct a search online and read the step by step instructions there; that way, you can determine if you can carry out the project or not.

Solar power systems are not that difficult to create especial-ly if you already have a considerable knowledge about it. All you will need to do now is to establish a workable budget so that you can start with the right project that you can afford. You can start with very simple solar power systems for your home like the solar generators. The generators are much more affordable and easy to make. After some time, you can now make more complicated plans like the thermal systems. Solar power for homes is an excellent alternative to those who want to save on electricity and help save the earth.

Don’t think twice and if you have the money to purchase the materials to make solar power systems, go for it. In the com-ing months, you will surely benefit from it.

Many men (and women) struggle with the prospects of becoming parents, asking themselves the questions....What do I do? How will I cope? Will my child like me?

This problem can be especially true for men, as tradi-tionally they are away from home most of the time. That’s not to say that men don’t make get house hus-bands. A lot of men can cope with bringing up the kids and looking after the family home, just as well as a woman can!!

So don’t worry Daddy, here are some helpful hints for you!!

1. Start off the experience by going with the Mummy-To-Be to Anti-natal classes. Learning about the pregnancy with your partner helps to prepare you for the arrival of your baby.

2. It’s important for you to see your little creation entering the world, so if you can, make sure your there at the birth. Remember, it took two to create this baby, so why should Mummy have to do it by herself?

3. Take turns to bath your baby. That one-one time is such a precious experience! Don’t be shy, get in the bath with your baby.

4. Take turns to feed your baby. Gazing into your baby’s eyes while he/she is feed-ing will help to seal the bond between the two of you.

5. Wrap the two of you up nice a warm and go for a walk. Being out in the open air, will take away any tension and help you to relax. When baby is older, find some ducks or birds to feed. This activity has been done all through the ages and en-joyed by many parents.

6. Reading bedtime stories to your little one is a good way to relax. As they get older, it is so much fun for them to join in! Don’t just read from books all the time, make stories up! Kids of all ages love hearing Daddy’s stories!!

7. Playtime is fun time!! Don’t be afraid to get the dollies and teddies out and have a tea party or picnic! Playing football or other ball games are a great way to exercise and have fun with your child! No matter if your child is a boy or a girl, doing these activities is fun for all who get involved!! Bring out your inner child and enjoy!!

DADS - TOP TIPS TO BOND WITH THE KIDS...

Page 36: September/October 2011 The Face of Chelmsford Magazine

ArticleFamily

8. Get baking with your child. No matter if you’ve never

made a cake or biscuits before, if you can read, you can follow a recipe!! Creating food together is great. Give it a go, you’ll enjoy it!!

9. Plant some seeds together. Looking after a plant togeth-er and watching it grow will bond you and your child/children. You don’t need a big garden or an allotment to grow some fruit and vegetables, a small patio area or even a window box will do just fine!! Children will more likely eat their veg if they have grown it!!

10. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. There is nothing wrong with asking for advice from people with experience, e.g. family, friends, work col-leagues, doctors etc.

Ask The Accountant

Q. I received my self-assessment statement and payslip on 17 August 2011, which shows tax due to be paid by 31 July 2011. I paid the tax due as soon as I could, but I am now worried that I will get charged interest and a penalty for late payment.

A. The late issuing of these statements was due to a lack of paper at HMRC’s printers! As the delay was essentially their fault HMRC has decided to waive the interest due, as long as the tax payment is received by 27 September 2011. However, this interest free period only applies to the second payment on account of income tax for 2010/11, due by 31 July 2011. Any other late tax payments, such as tax due by 31 January 2011 will accrue interest as normal.

Q. My son worked for a company that has gone into liquidation. The Tax Office are refus-ing to acknowledge the student loan repayments which were deducted from his salary in 2010/11 and pass those repayments on to the Student Loans Company. What can he do to get his student loan records corrected?

A. This can happen when the company folds before submitting its end of year PAYE return: form P35. This form shows the totals for all the deductions taken from each employee dur-ing the year. Your son needs to provide HMRC with any evidence he has of the student loan repayment deductions, such as original payslips or his form P60 for the tax year. HMRC should then pass this information onto the Student Loans Company who will correct his pay-ment record.

Q. I recently applied for VAT registration for my business as the turnover had exceeded the compulsory registration threshold. Now I’ve had a call from the VAT office asking to come and see me. What have I done wrong?

A. A visit to a newly registered business is now normal practice for VAT officers, particularly where the first VAT return shows a repayment due. The VAT inspectors will want to see the invoices for your first VAT period, and be assured that you know how to keep adequate busi-ness records. We can sit in on the VAT visit to provide back-up for any difficult questions if you wish.

Many people living in the Caerphilly county borough are unaware that one of the larg-est earth sculptures in Europe can be found right on their doorstep. Situated on a hilltop at Penallta Community Park near Ystrad Mynach is a magnificent 200-metre long, 5-metre high figurative earth sculpture of a pit pony designed by local artist Mick Petts. The spectacular landscape sculpture was created out of coal shale and forms an enormous natural amphitheatre within the popular country park. Local people have named the sculp-ture ‘Sultan’ after a famous Pit Pony that used to work in the old colliery.

The sculpture forms part of the award winning ‘Changing Places Millennium Pro-gramme’ carried out by Caerphilly County Borough Council and environmental char-ity Groundwork Caerphilly. The project in-volved transforming a derelict colliery spoil tip into the colourful community park it now is. The park recently scooped a prestigious environmental award form the Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales for its incredible transformation from a derelict site to a beautiful community park with play-grounds and green open spaces that can be enjoyed by all.

Did You Know?Human Head and Brain Size

The human head contains 22 bones, consisting the cranium and the facial bones. The cranium is formed by 8 bones: the frontal bone, two parietal bones, two temporal bones, the occipital bone in the back, the ethmoid bone behind the nose, and the sphenoid bone. The face consists of 14 bones including the maxilla (upper jaw) and mandible (lower jaw). (The skull has many little holes in its base which allow the cranial nerves to travel to their destinations.)

The cranium protects the brain, which, for an average adult male weighs about 1400 gram (49 oz). The brain of Russian novelist Turgenev, weighed 2021g (71 oz), Bismarck’s brain weighed 1807g (64 oz), while that of famous French statesman Gambetta was 1294g (46 oz). Female average brain mass is slightly less than that of males. The largest woman’s brain recorded weighed 1742g (61 oz). Einstein’s brain weighed 1230 gram (43.39 ounces), meaning Ein-stein’s brain was smaller than average.

An elephant’s brain weighs 5000g (176oz or 11 lb), a whale’s 10000g (352oz or 22lb). In pro-portion to the body, the whale has a much smaller brain than man. This seem to give man the edge, until it was discovered that the dwarf monkey has 1g of brain per 27g (0.95oz) of body, and the capuchin monkey has 1g of brain per 17,5g body, whereas man has 1 gram of brain to 44g of body.
