Where was I resentful, selfish, dishonest or afraid?

Do I owe an apology?

Have I kept something to myself which should be discussed with another person at once?

Was I kind and loving toward all?

What could I have done better?

Was I thinking of myself most of the time? Or was I thinking of what I could do for others, of what I could pack into the stream of life?

Chair’s Corner Succeeding in many aspects of my life can not be achieved on my own. Asking for, and accepting help is a key component in living a happy healthy life for me. Whether it be at home in my personal life, out in the business world or in the rooms of recovery one of the greatest

assets I have is the incredible group of people that surround me. If anything I constantly underestimate the impact they really have on me. It doesn’t have to be a life threatening situation. It could be as simple as asking me how I’m doing and then really listening after I go on a little passed the generic “Fine” answer. Those little moments add up over time and become the constant reminders in my life that allow me in dire times of need that I need to swallow some pride and reach out my hand to the support that is there waiting on me. That, for myself, is one of the things that I have to consistently keep working on. I must always remember that these wonderful people, these tools that my higher power has gifted me, are of no use to me if I don’t do my part and ask for the help when I really need it. Left to my own devices, without the support of those of you out there that continue to amaze and humble me with your generosity and love I would surely have never made it this far. If I want to continue on and to have any chance I must always remember that I am not in this alone and that when I am ready to reach out there is always a hand reaching back. Thank all of you for your help so far and I hope I can give back at least a small fraction of what I have been gifted.

You may notice the Grape-SCCIN is down-sizing to the bare basics: birthdays, monthly calendar (which can also be found online), any submitted service positions or events, and the Intergroup Council Meeting Minutes and Financials. Additional columns and items will be included, as they are submitted – and they are always warmly welcomed. If you have any AA-related announcements you would like included, please send them to [email protected].

The Big Book on Step 10

This thought brings us to Step Ten, which suggests we continue to take personal inventory and continue to set right any new mistakes as we go along. (p 84)

Continue to watch for selfishness, dishonesty, resentment, and fear. When these crop up, we ask God at once to remove them. We discuss them with someone immediately and make amends quickly if we have harmed anyone. Then we resolutely turn our thoughts to someone we can help. (p 84)

It would be easy to be vague about this matter. Yet, we believe we can make some definite and valuable suggestions. (p 85)

2

When we retire at night, we constructively review our day. Were we resentful, selfish, dishonest or afraid? Do we owe an apology? Have we kept something to ourselves which should be discussed with another person at once? Were we kind and loving toward all? What could we have done better? Were we thinking of ourselves most of the time? Or were we thinking of what we could do for others, of what we could pack into the stream of life? But we must be careful not to drift into worry, remorse or morbid reflection, for that would diminish our usefulness to others. After making our review we ask God's forgiveness and inquire what corrective measures should be taken. (p 86)

General Service Connection: Serving our fellowship in the digital age

1

Hello Fellow Trusted Servants,

Earlier this year Santa Cruz County General Service formed an ad hoc website committee to make some recommendations to the district about rebuilding our general service website. After several meetings and countless hours of service, our committee made a number of recommendations and presented a proposal to create a website to better serve our district’s needs. I want to express my gratitude toward, and admiration for, the committee members for the attention and deep consideration they have given this project over the course of the past six months.

As we progress into the 21st century it is becoming more evident day by day that conducting our business and communication in the district through emails, printouts, newsletters and the like is becoming increasingly difficult, time consuming and costly. As I type this column I can’t help but think of the considerable amount of time the Grape SCCIN chair will spend proofreading, compiling, and doing page layout to publish this article for those of you readers enjoying it. A labor of love to say the least!

The proposition from our committee is certainly revolutionary. To create a portal where all district business can be conducted electronically. Without compromising the anonymity of any of our individual members. The task requires much thought, thorough discussion and input from members and guidance from the General Service Office in New York. As prudence would have it we soon discovered not only is this a topic we are discussing here in Santa Cruz but members, groups, districts, areas, and AA World Services as a whole are very much engaged in this very same conversation. How can we embrace Internet technology to better serve the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous?

After a series of motions at our district we decided to send someone from our web committee to the second annual National Alcoholics Anonymous

2

Technology Workshop (NAATW) in St. Louis in early October. According to the NAATW website, “There seems to be a growing realization that Alcoholics Anonymous is somehow moving into a technological age, but we are not sure what form that we might, or ought to take. We are here to communicate our experiences and to inform ourselves about our needs and our experiences when using technology in our service work…Our hope is to share the message of Alcoholics Anonymous through technology to help the next alcoholic.” I invite anyone who is interested in learning more to visit www.naatw.org.

I want to thank all the GSRs, DCMs and District Chairs who participated in the process over these past few months. Coming to decisions about our digital destiny has not been an easy or straightforward process. It is only through our loving servants’ dedication and willingness to learn that we as a district have progressed. Reviewing reports, participating in discussions, listening to recordings from the International Convention, some members even went so far as to consult the General Service Office in New York. These are the lengths your representatives are willing to go to in order to come to an informed group conscience. Throughout the process, our guiding principles have been to use the Internet to adhere to our Traditions and carry our vital message to the still suffering alcoholic-- enabling us, in turn, to do more service work.

We look forward to hearing a report from our web committee after the workshop, and discovering what they learned. We’ll be sure keep you posted on any potential web site creation that is discussed in the future.

In love and service,

Jeff W. DCMC

Ten thousand nine hundred and fifty-seven days That's 30 years sober with no whiskey or wine What matters isn't how much time in the program It's how much program you put in the time If you ask how I did it, I will say: "It did me!" It works when you let it be simple and free I don't mean random or solely by chance When you practice the Steps, to Trudge is to dance Now rigorous honesty doesn't come easy Tell me to list my amends; I get queasy Just telling The Truth will lighten the load There's no secret handshake; no special code. What matters isn't how much time in the program It's how much program you put in the time I will say with certainty sooner or later I came to believe in a power that's greater I've learned to turn over my will and my life (This doesn't apply to my bills and ex-wife) For times when the slogans I can't understand My dog taught me five simple one-word

commands: Come! is the first and the meaning is clear Sit! listen up! have a laugh, shed a tear Speak! From your heart and let go of the fear Heal ! As resentment and lies disappear Stay ! You've arrived, you are home, you are here Well so much for canine sobriety tricks The point is I'm willing to grow, that's the fix Had I taken suggestions, growth might have been

quicker Some of us slow and some of us sicker

The Old-Timer slips and painfully pays He had too many years and not enough days More is revealed when I open my mind This is more than just Drinking Abatement I am learning a new way of life in these rooms Summarized in the following statement: The Steps and the Groups help me Be In The
