With the calendar turning to July, Senior Softball USAis excited to host 13 tournaments in the month, as thesport continues to rebound from cancellations causedby the COVID-19 global pandemic.

The pandemic is still throwing a wrench into theSSUSA season, as the state of Arizona has onceagain shut down for the next 30 days, with nogatherings larger than 50 people.

Due to this, the Ernie Jones Memorial/Western StatesChampionships, scheduled for July 15-19, has beencanceled.

Also, all Flagstaff Mountain Madness tournaments arecanceled for the 2020 season.

SSUSA will continue to move forward with numerousqualifiers scheduled throughout the country during thesummer.

Deadlines for the following four tournaments havepassed, and games are set to begin over the nextcouple of weeks:

Maryland Classic: July 7-12, Session 1 Schedule -Men's 65

Aggieland Classic: July 7-12

Quad Cities Classic: July 14-19

JIM SHERMAN MEMORIAL/NORTHWESTCHAMPIONSHIPS: July 14-19

Deadlines for the following nine tournaments arequickly approaching:

America, many of us long for those good olddays when we knew, mostly, what to expect.

As players, our goals were often centered onvery predictable things like finding the bestbat, or breaking in a back-up glove, or workingour way out of the mid-season slump.

Now we are in one of those times that willlikely become a milestone of history. And not agood one.

The current pandemic affects every part of life– including softball. Even getting a chance toplay is rare – and deciding to play may be agut-wrenching for some.

And perhaps hardest of all is that we havelittle control over what is happening in ourlives.

That’s true of players, teams – and softballorganizations.

For Senior Softball USA – like otherorganizations – it is not for lack of trying.

Take the Northeast Championships inSyracuse, N.Y., for example. Until about threeweeks before the tournament we were all setto go. The field owners confirmed the newpandemic rules for play, city officials wereexcited and, best yet, New York state COVIDcases had been declining.

Then, within a few days, that changed. COVID cases began climbing in states outsideof New York and the governor instituted rulesrestricting any gathering to people from thesame area.

For the next week, city officials begged thestate to allow the tournament; approachingseveral agencies and the governor’s office.

In the end, the answer was no and we had tocancel the tournament.

The problem really is that the situation isextremely fluid and can change in a state, orcounty or city in a matter of days – as it did inSyracuse.

While we cannot guarantee tournaments willgo on as planned during the pandemic; knowthat SSUSA is dedicated to re-opening thesport where it is possible and safe to do so.
