Year 10 Program OverviewA Year 10 program includes 10 semester-length units. Students construct a program from the range of subjects across the eight Learning Areas. Students must complete English and Mathematics over the whole year and choose from a broad range of subjects to complete their program. Eligible students entering Year 10 could consider undertaking a VCE subject or commencing a VET program as this offers additional opportunities for acceleration.

Specialist Programs Students who have been part of either Leaders in Sport, Performing Arts Collective, or the Murdoch Program are encouraged to continue this pathway into Senior School. Students in the specialist programs will continue with their peers through Home Group in Senior School, whilst having access to a broad range of subjects to support their individual pathway. The Senior Careers Team, as well as Senior Pathway Leaders, will be available to students from a specialist program throughout their senior years to assist them with options, courses, and tertiary choices. If students who are not currently in a specialist program would like to apply to join the Home Group of either LIS, PAC, or MP, they can apply for selection to their Middle School Pathway Leaders during Term 3 (where vacancies exist in the Home Group).

Year 10 Student Selections1 unit represents one semester of learning; students must select 10 units from ‘Table A: Year 10 Subjects’ as listed below:• 2 units of English.• 2 units of a Maths option.• 1 unit, Pathways to success.• 3 x 1 unit from 3 different Learning Areas.• 2 x 1 unit choices from any Learning Areas.

English Subjects and Pathways

YEAR 10 ENGLISH SUBJECTS

EnglishThe study will focus on developing knowledge and understanding of a range of texts. Using writing as a tool, students will learn to convey ideas and information effectively using a variety of text types for different purposes and audiences. Students will study these texts to explore in depth familiar and challenging ideas and issues and respond to these texts both personally and in more detached and critical ways.

LiteratureLiterature is designed for students who have a passion for literature and enjoy probing deeply into the complex nature of humans and their relations with others, and the places and times they inhabit. The study of literature aims to involve students in reading, writing and talking about the nature and value of a wide range of literature.

Mechanics of LanguageEvery element of language is a Lego block. In Mechanics of Language, students will investigate these building blocks, and learn how to use them to create the foundations of language. Students will use this knowledge to investigate human language and communication in different contexts and examine the history and interrelation between languages of the world.

VCE SUBJECTS

VCE EnglishUnit 1 and 2 - Students read and respond to texts analytically and creatively. They analyse arguments and the use of persuasive language in texts and create their own texts intended to position audiences. Students develop their skills in creating written, spoken and multimodal texts.

VCE LiteratureUnit 1 and 2 - Students focus on the ways in which the interaction between text and reader creates meaning. Students analyses of the features and conventions of and explore the ways literary texts connect with each other and with the world. By experimenting with textual structures and language features, students understand how imaginative texts are informed by close analysis.

VCE English LanguageUnit 1 and 2 - English Language explores the various functions of language and the nature of language as a highly elaborate system of signs. Students consider factors contributing to change over time in the English language and factors contributing to the spread of English. Attitudes to language change vary considerably and these are also considered.
