PERRY BECKER - ARCHITECT, LEED AP RESIDENTIAL VILLA DE ZILLA Scottsdale, Arizona The Becker residence (A.K.A. The Villa de Zilla) is a 2,980 s.f. +/- passive solar minimalist contemporary single-story 4-bedroom 3-bath home in Scottsdale Arizona. Built on a strangely shaped triangular lot with both positive and negative site considerations this environmentally sustainable home has been thoughtfully designed to enhance or mitigate these major site influences. Optimal desert climate passive solar orientation locates most of the major windows towards the north- east to avoid direct solar gain while strategically planted drought tolerant native desert trees provide additional window shading and reduced heat gain. Insulated CMU block, high performance insulated low-e glazing, galvanized metal shade trellis, high R-value insulation, radiant barrier, large thermal mass, ceiling fans, clearstory windows for increased day- lighting, operable transoms for flow- through ventilation supplemented with 16 SEER heat pumps all contribute to overall energy efficiency. Rainwater harvesting, low water use fixtures, grey water recovery system and native Sonoran Desert xeriscape landscape palette provide for enhanced water conservation.

WACOGGREEN EARTH LIVING PROJECTYuma, Arizona

Western Arizona Council of Governments (WACOG) commissioned a detailed planning study to provide high quality affordable energy efficient, walkable in-fill, single family neighborhoods that complied with LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification requirements for neighborhoods and homes. With a great civic desire to offer better quality housing options for its residents these homes had to be aesthetically compatible with the existing City of Yuma housing while also being easily adaptable to other surrounding communities and in-fill opportunities. A variety of one and two story single family homes and cluster home plans that ranged in size from 1,350 s.f. to 2,555 s.f. were developed in two different styles for architectural variety. Many of these proposed home designs can also accommodate a 490 s.f. casita for additional housing flexibility. Generous front porches promote a human scale connected neighborhood community while reducing the overall impact of automobiles. A nineteen acre walkable urban in-fill residential neighborhood with an adjacent commercial area was developed featuring two shared common green community ‘pocket parks’.

NEWBERRY TERRACETempe, Arizona

A series of two-story single-family and townhouse units ranging in size from 1,245 s.f. to 1,846 s.f. located in the Newberry Terrace community - Tempe, Arizona. A double-height great room in the townhomes provides a generous open spatial quality for the occupants. The single family homes are designed with inviting front porches positioned in front of the garage to de-emphasize the automobile and promote a more pedestrian oriented interactive community. As a new development surrounded by a mix of older established single family homes and apartments it was important that this Tempe in-fill project worked in harmony with the existing community context. Special attention was given to the scale, colors and material choices for these dwellings. Generous private outdoor backyards allow for the resident’s enjoyment while a neighborhood green ‘pocket park’ serves the community as shared open space and storm water retention.

EXTREME MAKEOVER HOMEby TAYLOR WOODROWGilbert, Arizona

A Taylor Woodrow production home design was modified in less than 48 hours to adapt to the TV production company’s requirements in order to star in the 2005 hit TV show ‘Extreme Home Makeover’ hosted by Ty Pennington. The two-story 5,300 s.f. single family home was built in less than a week and featured a formal entry courtyard, home theater and outdoor carousel.
