What impact does media ownership have upon th e range of products available to audiences in the media area you have studied? Media ownership is who or what companies have the right to a product. An example is Warner Brothers as they are involved with Heyday Films, which is a British Film Production Company. Heyday Films was founded in 1997 by David Heyman. The production company is involved with a variety of genres and has produced featured films such as Gravity, Harry Potter and Paddington. Gravity’s ownership is questioned as BAFTA classed it as a British Film, but it has a Mexican director and two Hollywood stars- George Clooney and Sandra Bullock. However the classification is due to Gravity having a British crew, filming location at Shepperton Studios and the use of Framestore. The film made 5 million in box office, mainly due to the casting of well-known stars that has allowed it to be advertised through social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. Whereas Matthew Vaughn a British Director contradicts the ownership of a ‘British Film Industry’ as he believes the industry does not exist and it only subsides Hollywood. Furthermore, Harry Potter is another film that is owned by Hollywood even with a British writer, cast and crew. The reason for this is Warner Brothers provided the funding, so they will gain the most out of the media convergence of genres and merchandises. However the impacts of media ownership are also evident with American companies such as the relationship between ‘Walt Disney’ and ‘Marvel’. Disney has ownership rights over the work produced by Marvel as they provide for the funding and guaranteed distribution. Marvel use synergy within their idea to attract the wider audience. Synergy is the combination of two or more companies or merchandises. The ‘Avengers’ as an idea was a USP (unique selling point) towards the audience. Mostly, this was due to single fan bases each Marvel character and bringing all the character would create a more action filled film. The target audience ranging from 12 + also increases excitement as they are active users of social media sites. Nevertheless, proliferation of hardware (growth of hardware) is apparent as without the growth and adaptations of mobile phones, laptops , televisions and etc. Without this aspect film ratings and income would prevent the film from breaking box office records such as the new ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ made in 2015. Approximately it

The reason for this is Warner Brothers provided the funding, so they will gain the most out of the media convergence of genres and merchandises. Disney has ownership rights over the work produced by Marvel as they provide for the funding and guaranteed distribution. Marvel use synergy within their idea to attract the wider audience. Synergy is the combination of two or more companies or merchandises. The Avengers as an idea was a USP (unique selling point) towards the audience. Without this aspect film ratings and income would prevent the film from breaking box office records such as the new Avengers: Age of Ultron made in 2015. Approximately it made 18 million pounds over 550 million viewings on the first day of release. Although, Disney would be benefiting from this huge success as they own the overall success and failure of the film and production company. Marvel is affected by this as they are not able to make definite decisions without approval. Disney within the company has media convergence- the merging of two technologies-which has a game called Disney Infinity. This reaches out to national audience as Walt Disney has several recreation parks distributed around the world and films can easily be advertised to the target audience of families.Overall, I believe media ownership does have an effect on media products. This is as budgets of films; the use of CGI and special effects depends on the ownership of your company. Films that are British Independent Films may not be successful as Heyday Films, which is due to being in a partnership with Warner Brother and this has guaranteed distribution and exhibition. This highlights how ownership can have both positive aspects and negative, as the outcome is unknown and it is dependant if your film has reached out to its national audience
