Message from Father Pergjini: Friday January 19, 2018. Again this year our parish will join thousands of people who will come from every part of the United States to protest against abortion, to pray for an end of this tragic crime of our society, to pray that those who decided to make legal this unspeakable crime, to pray for those who decide to take the innocent human life that cannot defend themselves, to pray for forgiveness and healing of those who had an abortion.

During these days many stories come to my mind regarding this tragic event of our society. It is a need to share and tell the story, and tell the truth that many unfortunately do not want to hear any more. A pregnant woman, in Milan, Italy, was brought to hospital to have one of the twins in her womb killed through abortion because the child might be suffering Down syndrome after birth. The doctor who conducted the intervention did not realize that the poor twin, vic-tims of this tragedy had switched places within their mother’s womb. So the one who was meant to be killed survived, and the healthy child was put to death. What a tragedy of our time! The story unfortunately, did not finish with the death of the healthy child. After few days the woman went again to the abortion mill. This time it was to kill the unhealthy child. The Italian media spoke of it as an unfortunate episode and no other comments were made about this continued tragedy of our time. Here in the States, unfortunately, the media did not mention at all this tragic end of two innocent lives. In what cynic and painful reality we live today!

Another event on the tragic consequences of abortions came to my mind. A young British artist, Emma Beck, pregnant with twins was forced by her boyfriend to kill the two innocent babies. After the abortion of her twin babies she suffered intense grief from her decision to end the lives of these two innocent victims. She never wanted to have an abortion, even in the hospital, but she was forced by her boy friend. The period of agony and loneliness that she went through ended tragically: she hung herself. Again we hear about something very tragic and painful.

Yes, I did mention these cases that are publicly known and I am sure are millions of other situations that are unknown to us, but known to Almighty Father and those who killed the innocents babies. Of course, there are unique and moving experiences from which abortion was avoided and life was chosen. In 1887, in a very small Polish town a pregnant woman decided to abort her baby in her womb. The non aborted offspring declared in 1966 in New York Times Magazine: “My Mom wanted to get rid of me before I was born, but my aunt dissuaded my mother, so I was allowed to be born.” It was a miracle! The one who was saved by his aunt was the famous and one of the greatest pianists of our time: Arthur Rubinstein. Yes, we see the power and good will of someone who wanted to save the life of the unborn child, unable to speak for himself, a life was saved, a precious life, a beautiful life, a gift from God. Again in Poland, the saintly woman of the future pope and Saint John Paul the second was advised by the doctor to abort her future son because her life was a stake. She refused to end the life of that famous and saintly man. We hope that miracles happen, as it has happened for the many like famous pianist Arthur Rubinstein and our beloved saint John Paul the Second. We hope and pray for more faith and continue our march for life, our march to save lives and allow them to live as we live.

We do not have to get discouraged about the tragic stories of abortion, we turn to the Lord for strength that faith can change the way things are perceived in our society today. As we will march on the streets of the capital, we will bring God’s vision of life, of hope and love. We will march looking up, looking toward the vision of Life and not of death, of love and not hatred, of hope and not of despair! Yes, again this year we will march praying the rosary in that cold weather with thirty student and our seventh grade teacher Mrs. Aponte of our parochial school and some of our student's parents who will come with us to our annual march for life. Many of them come for the first time to this amazing experience with thousands of people from all over the country. Majority of them are young who peacefully march and pray for an end to this unspeakable crime. Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta once said that never will there be peace on earth if abortion continues to be legally protected. Yes indeed, a law never is just to end the lives of those who cannot speak out to defend their lives. It is our responsible duty before God who must protect human life from the conception to natural death. We will march as a parish joining others and bringing the message of life, of healing and forgiveness. We ask all of you for your humble prayers. Many of you will not be able to join us to our annual March for Life but during the day you will think and pray for those innocent victims who have died through abortion and many other future victims. And also we ask every one's prayer for those who think to have an abortion to be touched by God's gift of life and to choose life and not death. Friday January 19, 2018 is the March for Life.

Our Lady of the Unborn pray for us! Most Sacred Heart of Jesus have mercy on us! Amen!

Last Sunday we celebrated the beautiful feast of the Epiphany of the Lord - Feast of the Three Kings. Due to your most generous response dear parishioners to our annual Christmas Toy Drive, many toys were able to be distributed to the children on this wonderful feast day. We wish to thank Hiram and Migdalia Hernandez for once again organizing the wonderful celebration. God bless you for your generosity!

Our thoughts turn to Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Unborn, as we approach the 45th Anniversary of the Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion on demand in our nation. As Our Lady did in Tepeyac, the Mother of God desires to bring about a cultural transformation in our times by restoring in each heart a knowledge of our goodness and the love and mercy of her Son.

This year, we are setting in motion that cultural transformation right here in the Archdiocese of New York, offering a local pilgrimage for those who cannot be present in Washington!

The Prayer Vigil for Life (Saint Patrick’s Cathedral Sunday, January 21, 2018, beginning with Holy Mass at 5:30 p.m.) is an encounter with the Living God, Jesus Christ. We will intercede for the conversion of our culture marked by this national court decision and implore that the culture of life begin within our own hearts!!

Our prayers will be Castilian roses in winter falling upon the city.

SecondSundayinOrdinaryTime January14,2018

The Archdiocese of New York is hosting a prayer vigil here in New York for all parishes of the archdiocese to come together to commemorate the 45th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade. St. Pope John Paul II has said that “prayer is the most powerful force in human history!” The prayer vigil will be at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral on Sunday, January 21, 2018, beginning with Holy Mass at 5:30pm, followed by Adoration with music by the Sisters of Life. For those who could not be present at the March for Life in Washington, DC, this event offers a local pilgrimage for the building up of the culture of life in our nation. The event is open to all parishioners, families, parish groups, the young and young at heart.

The over 56 million abortions since the 1973 decisions of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton reflect with heartbreaking magnitude what Pope Francis means by a “throwaway culture.” However, we have great trust in God’s providence. We are reminded time and again in Scripture to seek the Lord’s help, and as people of faith, we believe that our prayers are heard.

The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), no. 373, designates January 22nd as a particular day of prayer and penance, called the "Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children”: “In all the Dioceses of the United States of America, January 22nd shall be observed as a particular day of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life and of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion.” As individuals, we are called to observe this day through the penitential practices of prayer, fasting and/or giving alms.
