Word from the Pastor
February 2 is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. When this feast falls on a Sunday of Ordinary Time, it takes precedence over the Sunday Mass. Therefore, next weekend we will celebrate this beautiful feast at all our weekend Masses. It commemorates the Presentation of the baby Jesus in the temple which, according to Jewish law, took place 40 days after the child’s birth. This ancient feast dates back as early as the 5th century. It was near the end of the 8th century that the blessing of candles and a candlelight procession was added. Hence, the feast also became known as Candlemas Day.
Our gospel reading on this feast describes the encounter between Jesus who has just entered this world and faithful prophet/ess Simeon and Anna who are ready to depart this life. They rejoice to meet the Lord after so many years of waiting in hope. The use of candles at our Masses on this feast refers to the words of Simeon in the gospel when he refers to Jesus as “a light for revelation to the Gentiles…” On his first visit to the Temple, Jesus is already recognized as the light of the world. Our blessings and distribution of candles reminds us of our privilege and responsibility of bring the light of Christ to the world.
As a part of our celebrations next weekend, we will bless candles at all the Masses. You are invited to bring a candle to Mass with you and place it on the table in front of the altar before Mass begins. We will also have candles that you can purchase on the patio before or after Mass. The priest will bless these candles at the begin-ning of Mass. At the end of the Mass, you should retrieve your candle and take it home. You can light that candle in your home for use during individual or family prayer times.
You may also recall that the day after Candlemas Day is the memorial of St. Blase, bishop and martyr. The Catho-lic Church has the custom of blessing of throats on this memorial. Throats will be blessed at both morning Mass-es on Monday February 3 as well as at the healing Mass at 7:00 pm.
May Jesus, the Light of the World, enlighten our hearts and minds. May we, in turn, be bearers of his light to all who live in the darkness of poverty, despair, addiction, depression or the other dark places in our world. May the light we carry in our hearts bring hope to others.
In One Heart, Fr. Ron
Adoration Schedule Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament takes place every Tuesday (Divine Mercy Chaplet at 3:00pm on Tuesdays) and on the First Friday of each month.

The Presentation of the Lord
Next weekend, February 1-2, we will celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, traditionally called Candlemas, which commemorates the presentation of Christ in the temple. On this blessed day, we join Simeon and Anna in proclaiming Jesus as the light of the world.
There will be a blessing of candles at all Masses. You are invited to bring a candle from home for a blessing and encouraged to use your candle for family celebrations and in prayer. “For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all people: a light of revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.” —Luke 2:30

Reflection: Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Many people in our world are suffering from poverty, violence, and despair. But the light of God, Jesus, has come into the world. In Bethlehem our hope was born,
and Jesus is still being born in our hearts and lives, bringing light to dark places. What are you struggling
with right now in your life? How is Jesus a light for you? Prayer: Lord Jesus, you are our light, our life,
and our hope.

February 11, Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes Special Day of Prayer for the Sick
Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has declared the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes a Special Day of Prayer for the sick. Here, at St. Patrick's, we would like to invite any one who is sick to attend a Special Mass for the sick on Tuesday, February 11, at 11:00 a.m. We will honor Mary and ask her to watch over all of our loved ones who are sick. As a part of the Mass we will offer the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick to all those who are sick or that will be under-going surgery in the very near future.
It would be nice if all of our loved ones who are home-bound, could attend this very special Mass. Maybe family members or friends could offer to bring them to church.
During the week January 27-31, the St. Pat's Angels community service program at St. Patrick Catholic School will be running a drive to help orphans at the Door of Faith Orphanage (DoFO) located in Baja, Mexico.
Can you help? Donations will be gratefully accepted at the school office between 8am-10am each morning.
