Every mom wants their baby to grow big healthy and strong. Don’t let the smoke take over your child’s life.

Page 3: Second Hand Smoke On Infants

Think about others..Even if you don't smoke

when you're pregnant, just being around smokers, can increase the risk of

harming your future baby

Page 4: Second Hand Smoke On Infants

What is second hand smoke?Secondhand smoke is the combination of two forms of smoke from burning tobacco:•Side-stream smoke-side stream smoke describes the smoke coming off the end of a smoldering cigarette. It’s more dangerous then main stream smoke.•Main-stream smoke is smoke that is exhaled by the smoker.

Smoking During Pregnancy

Like drinking too much alcohol or doing drugs, smoking is also very harmful to your health. Smoking can make it harder for a woman to get pregnant. Not only is smoking harmful to you, it's also harmful to your baby during pregnancy.

Page 6: Second Hand Smoke On Infants

When you smoke during pregnancy, your baby is exposed to dangerous

chemicals like nicotine, carbon monoxide and tar. These chemicals can lessen the amount of oxygen that your baby gets. Oxygen is very important for

helping your baby grow healthy. Smoking can also damage your baby's

lungs.

Baby+ Smoke= Intoxicating Death

Page 7: Second Hand Smoke On Infants

Can you believe this?... It can also cause eye diseases that

can lead to blindness.

Page 8: Second Hand Smoke On Infants

The fetus and newborn?•Newborns exposed to second-hand smoke are at an increased risk of ear infections and are more likely to need an operation to insert ear tubes for drainage.•They will develop weak lungs which it would make it really hard for them to breath.

When a woman smokes during pregnancy, the nicotine may cause constrictions in the blood vessels of the umbilical cord, thereby decreasing the amount of oxygen available to the fetus. This increases the risk of complications such as:

•Miscarriage

•Premature birth

•Stillbirth

Page 10: Second Hand Smoke On Infants

Low birth weight • The baby is going to come out really small• Babies born weighing less than 5 pounds, 8

ounces (2,500 grams) are considered low birth weight.

• Low-birth weight babies are at increased risk for serious health problems as newborns, lasting disabilities and even death.

Page 11: Second Hand Smoke On Infants
Page 12: Second Hand Smoke On Infants

Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)• Infants who die from

SIDS tend to have higher concentrations of nicotine in their lungs than do control children, regardless of whether smoking is reported.

• There is no signs to show it is going to happen. One morning, when going to wake the baby, you realize the baby is dead.

Page 13: Second Hand Smoke On Infants

Cognitive Impairments

• Loss of higher reasoning• Forgetfulness• Learning disabilities• Concentration difficulties• Decreased intelligence • Other reductions in mental functions.

Cognitive impairment may be present at birth or can occur at any point in a person’s lifespan.

Respiratory problems The infant will have

trouble breathing which increases the number of colds, sore throats, and lower respiratory tract infections each year in

infants and children under 18 months old.

These illnesses result in as many as 15,000 hospitalizations.

Page 15: Second Hand Smoke On Infants

Asthma

•Children whose mothers smoked throughout the pregnancy have an elevated risk of asthma in the first

five years of life.•Children whose mothers quit

smoking prior to the pregnancy show no increased risk.

•If it gets severe enough, they will have to use a machine that will help

them breath.

Page 16: Second Hand Smoke On Infants

Who is at risk?•Newborns because of their age. They are

not able to make a decision for themselves.

•The person who is smoking is damaging themselves but also polluting the air

around them harming their health.

•Everyone that lives in the same house who is being exposed to smoke.

Possible Effects of Smoking During Pregnancy to the Mother:

•Vaginal bleeding•Placenta peels away, partially or almost completely, from the uterine wall before delivery• Low-lying placenta that covers part or all of the opening of the uterus• Smoking mother will produce less milk.

Page 21: Second Hand Smoke On Infants

Helpful ways to quit smoking

• Go to a local area where they offer help to quit.

• Talk to someone about the stuff that causes you to smoke.

• Find a hobby that you can have fun doing and that does not harm your health or people around. Ex: exercise, sing, dance, go out with friends etc..

Page 22: Second Hand Smoke On Infants

Protecting yourself and your love ones around you..

• If you're a smoker, stop.• Go to places where smoke is not permitted. Ex:

restaurants, relative’s houses, concerts etc.• Let the people that visit you know that your

house is a smoke free area.•If being exposed to smoke leave the place

immediately.

Page 23: Second Hand Smoke On Infants

Stop smoking in a home..

• Support smokers who decide they're going to quit - chances are they feel badly enough about their habit and wish they could quit. If you live with a smoker, be gentle, but firm in your request that they smoke only outside.

• Keep in mind that even if they only smoke outside, secondhand smoke clings to clothing and skin. Toxins are still off-gassed (released back into the air) when someone who has been exposed, returns indoors.

Page 24: Second Hand Smoke On Infants

Why is second hand smoke a problem?
