While bagnaia was an important spa town outside of Siena during the middle ages, today it is known for the robert trent Jones, Jr. championship golf course that meanders through the area’s gently rolling hills. borgo la bagnaia is a challenging course that fits naturally into this tuscan setting. Jones let the flow of the land dictate the routing of this impressive layout that finishes strong.

located in a natural amphitheater on the northeastern base of mount etna, il picciolo meanders through ancient lava flows, and offers spectacular views of snow-covered mount etna. Hazelnut trees, oak woods, pine trees, eucalyptus and vineyards surround many holes. this parkland layout, which opened in 1989, makes full use of the natural topography, creating a unique and unforgettable playing experience.

tour: mount etna and taormina our tour of mount etna leads us up the rugged slopes to explore one of europe’s natural wonders. after our memorable visit there, we enjoy lunch in taormina and have plenty of time to explore this cliff-hanging, old-world resort town, often compared to positano and Èze, france. our local guide leads us through the charming market, buzzing shops and cafés to the ancient greek theater, home to performances for two thousand years. theater seats look out over dramatic cliffs to the shimmering ionian Sea and a coastline that is visible for 30 miles.

the fairways of the gary player-designed parkland course at Donnafugata are carved out of natural rolling hills, accentuated by the seasonal colors and scents of the region. players feel isolated on fairways tucked into the landscape, dotted with distant glimpses of captivating views of the sea and coastline. the serene setting belies the challenges presented by the Sirocco winds that come from africa.

our tour leads us to the charming hilltop town of modica. this uneSco World Heritage site, home to 100 baroque churches, is recognized for some of the most beautiful architecture in Sicily. We also learn about the 400-year tradition of Sicilian chocolate making. as a part of Spain for many years, Sicily was one of the first european regions to gain access to cacao imported from South america. among the results are the delicious chocolate specialties for which modica is known.
