Baydur 110 permettedi realizzare parti con spessori particolarmentesottili. È indicato per volumetrie squadrate espigoli vivi: nel caso di un apparecchio per illu-minazione caratterizzato da un design essen-ziale e minimalista, l’abbiamo stampato inspessori sottili 4 mm. Anche se Baydur 60 ha una migliore resistenzatermica grazie alla formulazione più espansa(550-700 g/dm3 contro 1050 g/dm3 di Baydur110), in questo progetto abbiamo definitoaccanto al cliente le soluzioni tecniche idoneeper utilizzare comunque il Baydur 110, inseren-do intercapedini ed elementi di acciaio inossi-dabile che assicurano l’assorbimento del caloregenerato dalla sorgente. Per produrre una plafoniera di grandi dimen-sioni e spessori consistenti, da inserire inambienti contract e spazi per comunità, lascelta è invece caduta sul Baydur 60, cheresiste alle alte temperature, è più leggero dialtri materiali e fornisce un’ottima stabilitàdimensionale”.

MaterialScience: Baydur 60 and Baydur 110have aesthetic and mechanical performancelevels that are basically the same but theydo need different design and process modifi-cations. Baydur 110 can be used to makeparts that are quite thin. It is ideal for squa-re-shaped volumes and sharp corners: in thecase of a light fitting characterised by anessential and minimalist design, it was moul-ded to be 4 mm-thick. Even though Baydur60 has a better thermal resistance thanks toits more expanded formula (550-700gm/dm3 against 1050 gm/dm3 of Baydur110), for this project we came up with,together with the customer, the technicalsolutions that were the most suitable for

using Baydur 110, inserting interspaces andparts made out of stainless steel that ensurethe absorption of the heat given off by thesource. However, when it came to making a ceilinglight fixture that was big in size and had aconsistent thickness, so that it could be usedin contract settings and public areas, wedecided to use Baydur 60 as it can withstandhigh temperatures, is lighter than othermaterials and provides excellent dimensio-nal stability”.

Beauty is science: the wellness industryThe relatively recent introduced wellness orbeauty industry also needs body care equip-ment that has a high design and aestheticcontent. One of RGS Europa’s most signifi-cant creations is the futuristic Eximia multi-functional appliance, modelled by the archi-tect Valentino Concas, where the boldness ofthe lines was ‘borrowed’ from car stylingcircles. Consisting of a body and three shellsmade out of Baydur 60 that are big in sizeand have variable thicknesses, plus a num-ber of smaller components with a complexgeometry moulded out of Baydur 110, theEximia is proving to be a great commercialsuccess. “The excellent response regardingthis appliance that was made for Janus hasconfirmed our belief that beauty is recogni-sed as such by the market. – underlined Mr.Raugei – The customer and the end user per-ceive an object, with its careful and innova-tive design, as a high-tech, therefore, effec-tive tool. Even electronics can be seen asthe heart of an appliance that has unusualor anonymous lines, or be housed in a refi-ned shell: the latter gives the onlooker thefeeling of technology that is much moresophisticated”.

In large numbers: cash and service dispensers“At times, the surface quality of Baydur 60and Baydur 110, both of which require alu-minium moulds, means that they can beinterchangeable. In a consolidated industrylike that of cash dispensers, Baydur 110 isthe perfect material if you want sturdinessand thickness. We found making cash dispen-sers that were to be installed inside banksout of Baydur 40 to be a real technical chal-lenge. We successfully took to the limit theperformances of a lower density formula(400-500 g/dm3) which can be moulded atlow pressure levels using resin-based equip-ment, and is, therefore, mainly earmarkedfor prototypes and small-medium productionruns. We guarantee resin moulds for runs of

In grandi numeri: bancomat ed erogatori di servizi“La qualità superficiale di Baydur 60 e Baydur110, entrambi lavorati con stampi di alluminio,li rende talvolta intercambiabili. banche impiegando il Baydur 40, portando allimite, con successo, le prestazioni di una for-mulazione a minore densità (400-500 g/dm3)che si stampa in bassa pressione con attrezzag-gi in resina, ed è perciò prevalentemente indi-cata per prototipi e serie medio piccole. Glistampi in resina sono garantiti da noi per tira-ture fino 500 pezzi, – spiega Gabriele Raugei -anche se alcuni clienti li hanno utilizzati perserie di oltre 800 pezzi. La densità più ridottadi questo poliuretano implica un lavoro di fini-tura più lungo e costoso delle tipologie a mag-giore densità, e il suo impiego rimane compe-titivo nel caso di preserie e tirature limitate.Se Baydur 40 merita un discorso applicativo aparte, in generale il poliuretano rigido vince sualtri materiali altrettanto estetici perché saassicurare una buona produttività. Un nostroprogetto in corso d’opera concerne un eroga-tore di servizi, pensato per il pagamento deiticket in una struttura ospedaliera o comeinfopoint. L’alloggiamento sostituisce integral-mente il rivestimento metallico del modelloprecedente, esteticamente ben riuscito ma piùcostoso e limitato nella produzione”.

Tecnologia in costante rinnovamento La filosofia orientata al design di RGS Europa èsupportata dal costante rinnovo delle attrezza-ture e dall’ottimizzazione delle risorse.“Abbiamo arricchito il parco macchine perrispondere alla richiesta di una maggiore pro-duzione da parte dei nostri clienti, dotandocidi 8 postazioni con stampi in alluminio. Glistampi in alluminio, peraltro, sono garantitiper tirature di 50.000 pezzi, un numero cheoltrepassa largamente gli standard produttividegli utilizzatori di poliuretano. Nella primametà del 2008 abbiamo concluso l’inserimentodi cinque nuove presse a 90° con teste d’inie-zione di ultima generazione; le rimanenti trepresse di tipo tradizionale saranno tutte sosti-tuite con modelli nuovi entro il 2010. Per glistampi in resina sono in funzione due isole diproduzione dedicate alla realizzazione di arti-coli ad alto contenuto tecnico in serie medio-piccole, per clienti con un fabbisogno di 200-300 pezzi l’anno. Con l’aumento della nostracapacità produttiva si è inoltre reso necessarioun sistema gestionale agile ed efficace: imple-mentato all’inizio di quest’anno, è attivo nel-l’area amministrativa e nella logistica. Nelcorso del 2008 – conclude Raugei - il nuovosistema gestionale abbraccerà anche le fasiproduttive per monitorare stampaggio, finiturae verniciatura dei singoli lotti di produzione, alfine di semplificare e accelerare il flusso diinformazioni, nonché di effettuare più accura-te analisi dei costi”.

Thelower density of this polyurethane entails alonger and more expensive finishing processthan with high density types, but it is stillcompetitive to use in the case of pre-seriesand limited production runs. Baydur 40 deserves a special mention, inthat, generally speaking, rigid polyurethanehas the upper hand over other materialsthat are just as aesthetic as it ensures goodproductivity. One of the projects that weare currently working on involves a servicedispenser, designed to enable patients topay for hospital treatment or as an informa-tion point. The housing fully replaces themetal coating that was used in the previousmodel. It is nice to look at but more expen-sive and limited when it comes to produc-tion”.

Constantly updated technology The design-based philosophy at RGS Europais backed-up by the fact that they are con-stantly updating their equipment and opti-mising their resources. “With the introduc-tion of 8 work stations that use aluminiummoulds we have increased the number ofmachines we have in response to requestsput forward by our customers for greaterproduction. What’s more, aluminium mouldsare guaranteed for batches of up to 50,000parts, a number that is much higher thanstandard output levels reached by polyure-thane users. In the first six months of 2008we concluded the introduction of five new90° presses that have latest generationinjection heads: the other three traditionalpresses will be replaced by new models in2010. When it comes to the resin moulds,two production isles are up and runningdedicated to making high-tech objects insmall/medium batches, for customers whoneed 200-300 parts per year. With the increase in our production capacitywe also found that an agile and effectivemanagement system was needed: it was setup at the beginning of this year and is partof the administrative and logistics depart-ment. In 2008 – concluded Mr. Raugei – thenew management system will also cover theproduction phases so as to be able to moni-tor the moulding, finishing and sprayingoperations for the individual productionbatches, aimed at both simplifying andspeeding up the flow of information, as wellas carrying out more accurate cost analysisprocedures”.
