2016 Executive

Hello everyone. It's hot out and I am looking forward to taking the Model A's for a spin.

I was very sorry to hear of the passing of long time member Howard Moore. Howard was such a happy, friendly man who I really enjoyed talking to. He had such an uplifting personality. Howard's memorial was a tribute to an outstanding person and I am glad to have known him.

We have such great members in this club. The Model A has brought such a wide range of people together. Seeing the cover picture of this month's newsletter only confirms it. Life long friends that get together where ever they are. I hope our new members see what a great hobby this is and how it easily becomes an important part of our lives.

I congratulate JR Smith for his World of Wheels award. It takes a lot of work to display at the World of Wheels and he did a great job of representing the Model A and the club. We will have to think about bringing the club display back to the show.

Get your cars ready, I am.

JR Smith, filling in for Troy Dillabough called the meeting to order at 7:40 PM welcoming 22 members. The next meeting will be held at Woodridge Ford March 9th at 7:30 PM.

thSecretarial: Yvon Picot made a motion to approve the minutes from the January 13 2016 meeting as “accepted as published” with Colin Outtrim seconding; all members in favor. Correspondence was light consisting of tax receipts from the various charities we support, banking statement and insurance information.

Treasurer: Brian LeBlanc delivered a full report on the finances for 2015. Norm Devitt motioned for approval of the report with Mike Hill seconding.

Membership: JR Smith and Jeff Brooks reported that we currently have 88 of the potential for 99 members (as in 2015).

Publications: SCRIPT sponsor canvassing continues this coming month and if anyone has suggestions regarding possible advertisers, please bring them to the attention of the executive. Also, to aid with the monthly publication, if anyone has automotive related ideas they would like to share, please forward your article to Al Friesen.

Capital Assets: No report, Paul and Kathy Chudek away until April. AA truck stored inside clubhouse.

Tours & Activities: Tour Director Yvon Picot spoke to the published sheet of the yearly plans thus far. Please forward any ideas to Yvon and volunteer if you can. The “Activities” page on the SCMAFC web site will have these items listed as they are confirmed. Thus far, 13 events for the year have been proposed and champions identified including one overnight trip to Southern Alberta. Details to follow, first event is

thHeritage Park Brunch on Sunday April 27 . Pending interest, there may be a Springbank Car Tour in March, details to follow.

Old Business: Club jacket orders are now being accepted. Please check correspondence in November and December regarding how to order and the three types of jackets chosen.

New Business: Colin Outtrim will present next month on his custom made trunks for our cars. Colin makes them from oak and will custom build to any size you like.

Tech Talk: DeGreeve Auto Upholstery was in to present on car interiors. The company has been in Calgary for 80 years and works on restorations but also new vehicles, everything interior from seats to headliners, dashboards, heated seats. Of note, some car upholstery kits do not fit that well and an option to consider is to source the material and have DeGreeve build it to fit your car.

Thank-you again to Gerry Wood for allowing us to use the facility and to Dave Dodd for the treats.

Meeting adjourned at 8:45 PM. Gord Rouse__________SCMAFC Secretary

Editor’s Notes

Al Friesen

I think everyone agrees that our Southern Alberta weather has been outstanding this winter. Let’s hope we get an early start to the Model A driving season.

A huge thanks to JR Smith this month for sharing his World of Wheels experience with us in the form of photos and an article, Well done JR and congratulations on your award!

In addition to Yvon Picot’s 2016 Touring schedule please take note that Ted Lobley has arranged a Heritage Park tour for March 12th. See page 5 for details.

Just a reminder that the full touring schedule is posted on the club web site and I will include additional info on each tour in the Script as it becomes available.

Enjoy the weather and lets get out and get our cars polished up early this year!

TECH TALK

Sid Gough - Technical Editor

For most Model A drivers the habit of starting "UP" the A is routine.

Starting "UP" refers to the position of the spark and throttle levers on the steering column. In the "UP" position the spark is retarded in order to allow the piston to pass Top Dead Centre before igniting the fuel mixture. If the mixture ignites and starts to expand before the piston reaches TDC it can force the piston to reverse the rotation of the crank shaft.

If you were hand cranking the engine the force of the reversal could break your arm. On the starter the reversal could blow gaskets and possible damage the starter and ring gear.

Once the engine is running advancing the spark (moving the lever down) allows the spark to occur just as the piston reaches TDC. As the engine is turning faster the expanding hot fuel mixture will force the piston down for the POWER stroke. The faster the engine is turning the more advanced the spark is required. A delayed spark allows the piston to travel too far down the power stroke before the expanding hot fuel mixture can apply the full pressure of it's expansion. The result is a lack of power.

As for the throttle lever, in the "UP" position it sets the fuel intake at the level required to start the engine.Too much, "fully down" will flood the engine.

Note: I have not mentioned the fuel "exploding". The fuel/air mixture "burns" and the expansion of the hot mixture is what creates the smooth power.

Roundhouse, tram shed and rail car tour at Heritage ParkOn Saturday, March 12 at 10 am we meet at the Roundhouse for a two hour tour of the shops that is not seen by the regular Heritage Park guest. The locomotives are being refurbished for spring opening and the giant steam operated railway crane is close to operation. Rail cars are being repaired allowing us to see the underlying structure. We plan on seeing the Waltham band car used in circus parades and other restored vehicles. Lunch afterward is informal with the location to be determined by the group. The Selkirk on site is a possibility.

Please let Ted Lobley know if you are attending. Ted’s e-mail is We can accommodate two groups of 20. It is suggested that participants provide a donation of $10 in appreciation of the effort the park is making on our behalf.

The 50th Annual World of Wheels was held on February 19th to the 21st 2016 at the BMO Centre at Stampede Park with an independent entry this year of a 1930 Model A Deluxe Tudor Sedan. As a result of the Judging category “Class: Restored” for the years 1928 to 1934 inclusive, JR received a First Place plaque! JR wishes to thank Mr. Chris Brancaccio for spending all his Saturday afternoon and evening with him and Mr. Troy Dillabough for his participation on Thursday evening for the move-in/set-up and Sunday afternoon for the move-out. A few other members were spotted viewing the display including: Brian LeBlanc (secret photographer not wanting to be in the group photo), Jeffrey Brooks, David Brooks, Brian Muise, Norm Devitt and Keith Robinson. 2016 SCMAFC Membership forms were handed out to interested people. Forms were also placed on seats of any Model A cars on display at the show.

The World of Wheels had their annual Classic Pin-Up Girl contest and six of them conducted a 45 minute photo shoot using the interior and exterior angles of the car. This photo shoot attracted further participants to look at the car. The Model A was well received by many with comments such as: "we wish more antique cars were restored in Calgary", "it would be great having more classic cars at this show", "this car sure brings back many memories for me", "my dad had a car just like this, yet have not seen one in decades” and "these antiques must be restored to show our younger generation"!

Special THANKS must go to the following individuals for providing their volunteer and paid assistance to JR since 2008 restoring some of the flaws and the non-traditional and authentic components that had been added as after-market accessories.

Paul Chudek (Annual Inspections in 2009, 2012, 2014 and 2015)

Dave Dodd (Annual Inspection in 2009, 2012 and 2014)

Keith Robinson (Annual Inspection in 2009 and 2012)

Chris Brancaccio (Annual Inspection in 2015)

Jim Callander (Annual Inspection in 2015)

Murray Walkemeyer (Annual Inspection in 2015)

Ron Rigby (Project coordinator, material ordering, and updated restoration work in 2014 and 2015) A fabulous help!

Al Shannon (Ongoing history and new construction of floor board in 2014 and 2015)

Brian Muise (Painted partial exterior body – painting of hood, fenders and steering wheel in 2015)

Mike Kojam (Powder coating the wheels in 2014)

Yvon Picot ( Electrical in 2014)

Dwaine at George Moir Antique Auto Parts Ltd. (Ordering and shipping parts)

And others may have assisted with inspections over the years, yet did not have a copy of some inspection sheets as they had been turned in on site.

JR is still researching the purchase of original tools and a leather trunk to complete his restoration to be able to enjoy participating in a few “Show and Shine” events and ‘Sunday’ driving.
