Happy

Birthday!!

Last month we recognized two outstanding employees of the Haverhill

Clubhouse, Clubhouse Counselor Lynn Routhier. and Clubhouse Counselor

Christian Way! The teamwork, dedication and heart these two employees

show on a daily basis is exceptional!

Lynn has been a tremendous asset to the Clubhouse. Lynn posses the innate

ability to get our quietest members to open up and feel comfortable, is a

natural at listening at engaging the members and allowing them to feel at ease,

trusting in her and the Clubhouse. Lynn is a true team player in every sense of

the word; from working side by side with the members, managing the café and

it’s increased sales, verifying that our billing is processed daily,

ensuring our members have been outreached to, as well as processing our bills

and managing our accounts payable. Lynn is a self-starter who continues to

have a positive impact on the Clubhouse daily.

We are blessed to have had Christian Way. return to work for us. Christian’s

skill set is impressive, he is a Major in the U.S Army Reserve, he earned a

Doctorate Degree in psychology and holds a plethora of licenses making him a

skilled and dedicated employee. Christian would never tell you about of any

of those achievements, he is not boisterous, but rather a humble soul who is

dedicated to helping our members feel equal, accepted and understood. You

will often hear Christian say “no one is above anyone.” Christian has a won-

derful sense of humor,

constantly making jokes and creating a fun and warm atmosphere. He is

fantastic working with the members planning all our Clubhouse activities and

ensuring the members have great social trips. He teaches a variety of art

classes, incorporating many different mediums of art. Many of the pieces are

made to sell at our fundraising Craft Fairs. Christian often brings the

members to market our program on Mobile Outreach to the area hospitals. He

does a great job connecting with our veterans and incorporates Health and

Wellness by motivating the membership to join him for an hour of exercise at

the YMCA. Christian is known for often going above and beyond!”

The CASR unit was very active this month. The month started off with a trip to the Greek Orthodox Craft Fair

where the Clubhouse was able to shop for some home made crafts and gather ideas for how to run our own

craft fair. We also had an opportunity to go to the China Buffet restaurant where the Clubhouse had an

opportunity to engage and engage with others, how to pay the tab and how to leave a tip. Everyone did a great

job and helped one another learn how to calculate what to leave for a tip.

The Clubhouse also went bowling and had a great time. All who participated said they wanted to do this activ-

ity again. The highlight of the month was our Day of Thanks Celebration which was held on the

Wednesday prior to Thanksgiving Day. This has become an annual event and offers the Clubhouse with a time

to get together as a group and express what we were all thankful for during the past year. The

Clubhouse also offered a Thanksgiving Day feast for all who wanted to celebrate the holiday here at the Club.

The month finished up with a wonderful class held at the Essex Art Studio in Lawrence where the Haverhill

Clubhouse joined with The Point After Club to work on a creative art project. This is truly a highlight event

for the Clubhouse. Additionally, the Clubhouse is also active in creating crafts to sell for the up and coming

craft fair held at the Haverhill Clubhouse on Dec. 6th – 8th from 9:00am to 2:00pm. Please come and see what

our club has made. We have hand crafted jewelry, baked goods, hand knitted goods, decoupage boxes, tiles

and more. Our craft fair is a great occasion to pick up an early gift for the holidays and support the

Haverhill Clubhouse at the same time.

college, I plan to find work in this field so some of you can expect to hear from me again! I

truly enjoyed getting to know each and everyone here at the Clubhouse and am looking

forward to crossing paths in the future.

Sincerely,

The best intern,

Edgardo P. (Eddie)

Silhouette of the Mind Project

The Haverhill Clubhouse has embarked on an innovative art project. Silhouette of the Mind is a photographic

representation that uses the medium of photography and symbolism to express one’s inner and emotional ex-

perience. Each Club member was asked to participate in a meditation exercise, to help members gain deep ac-

cess into their creative unconscious. Following the calming exercise, Clubhouse members were asked to an-

swer a brief questionnaire to elicit their responses to five questions. The first question was to ask what their

favorite color is, the second what animal best represents them, the third was to choose and object of signifi-

cance to them, and the forth was to choose a landscape that appeals to them. The fifth and final question was

to choose a word that best describes their emotional state. Nicolle then placed the selected representative im-

ages into and around the silhouetted figure of the member. The results are dramatic and truly magnificent. We

look forward to the project being unveiled with a public showing schedule at the Essex Art Center.

I was so pleased to see the final product of my “Mind Shot” photo. This abstract reflects all of the internal and intricate

facets that make me who I am. The red and blue colors represent the duality I feel exists in my soul dealing with anger

and aggression on the one hand and tranquility on the other. The large “Chi Rho” symbol reflects my love and reverence

for Christ. He truly is the alpha and omega (the beginning and end). The photo reflects my desire to keep my eyes set on

him and live my life for him. The tree represents the tree of knowledge. Learning in my life is electric, eclectic, and

powerful. The trees branches are dispersed; symbolically representing the different disciplines or branches of ones

knowledge that may grow over time. The bear reflects my physical strength and the dolphin reflects my playful and fun

loving spirit. The ocean symbolizes my unconscious mind that is deep, reflective, creative, and life sustaining; while at

the same time can be overpowering and destructive if not controlled The crucifix is above the ocean and serves as a to-

ken remembrance that provides guidance and control over my unconscious processes. It reminds me that I must guide

this powerful force towards the moral imperatives Christ gave to us, and to remind me of the greatest gift he has be-

stowed upon me; everlasting life to those who believe in him. The mechanical gears demonstrate the mechanistic frame-

work my conscious mind employs in an attempt to organize my world. It also symbolizes my belief in the law of causal-

ity. This mind shot photo accurately reflects both my conscious and unconscious processing. When I look at it I become

more reflective of my life and what it means. By Christian W.

Avoiding 6 Common Holiday Depression Triggers Many people suffer with stress, anxiety, and depression during the winter holidays. The truth is holiday cheer isn’t

guaranteed just because it’s forced on you by television specials, social media posts, and carols in every single store

you step foot in. Several sources can cause a storm of negativity during the holidays—from money stress to family

stress, and from pressure and unmet expectations to loneliness. If you’re prone to depression over the holidays, here

are six common negative hazards to avoid…

1. Trim your Obligations - While your trimming the halls with holly and mistletoe, it’s a good time to remember that

it’s alright for you to say no. That means you don’t have to feel guilty and obligated to do it all. You even have the

permission to celebrate in your PJ’s in the comfort of your own home, no matter what your in-laws say. Give yourself

permission to sit out holiday soirees and gatherings that are just too stressful. You can also limit your time at events to

make an appearance, but duck out before anxiety sets in.

2. Get Some Shut Eye - With all the holiday planning, it’s no wonder many of us are short on sleep over the holidays.

Last minute baking, cooking, shopping, wrapping, and etc., can no doubt eat into your sleep schedule. The National

Sleep Foundation identifies a clear link between sleep loss and depression, but that relationship is a two-way street.

While sleep loss can cause depression—persistent sleep loss can lead to feelings of hopelessness, loneliness, sadness,

anxiety, apathy, and depression. To combat, try to establish a regular sleeping schedule where you go to bed and wake

up at roughly the same time daily, even during the holiday rush.

3. Say No to Family Drama - You’re definitely not alone if bringing the family together over the holidays results in

tons of conflict and drama. However, you don’t have to take part in the chaos. Go into family gatherings armed with a

means to shut down those who want to stir up conflict. If the pot is stirred by Uncle Jimmy, just say, “You have a right

to your opinion, but now’s not the time to talk about it.”

4. Feel to Heal - Many folks will experience the loss of a loved one during the holiday season, but grieving that

loss isn’t something you can (or should) put on hold until Christmas and New Year’s Eve are over. Mourning a loved

one, a lost relationship, and even the death of a pet can make us feel hopeless, angry, cynical, and guilty as the holi-

days approach. As humans we need to feel to heal, so don’t refrain from reaching out to loved ones, take time for

yourself, talk about your feelings, and join a support group.

5. Get Real with Expectations - Recall your favorite holiday movie where the family felt the true meaning of Christ-

mas…and the snow fell and the stars twinkled, all the little children danced with all the winter woodland creatures?

Yeah, that was fake. Totally Hollywood fake. It’s often the pressure we inflict on ourselves to have the perfect holiday

that makes it a depressing let down. So do your expectations a favor. Get real with more simple shopping, wrapping,

and decorating, and try to look around and grateful for the genuine blessings in your life.

6. Give a Little Self-Care - During the holidays we’re often

pressured to focus on others, so much that caring for ourselves is

forgotten among all the shopping, baking, visiting, hosting,

and gifting for everyone else.

BE AWARE OF MOTHER NATURE (By

Russ G)

Something is brewing with Mother Nature and

if you don’t think something’s happening out

there and that there is more to come,

well…..At this rate, we see all areas of the

world where, as far as we know, the weather is

created not

knowing where the wind comes from and

goes. We, have no control over such a danger-

ous element as water. We need to have more

respect because we have seen a lot worse than

our weather. Thank your lucky stars we aren’t

in Cuba, Puerto Rico, Florida, Hawaii; yes bi-

zarre things are going on around the world

everywhere. It’s hard to be positive and re-

main in that state because things are out of

control more than ever. As time moves on, we

are moving so rapidly;

especially the cell phone frenzy, which has a

negative side as well. Complicated computers

are in control of everything. What happens

when there is a major power failure? There is

no backup system like the weather. The latest

Lighthouse Eyes As the stars arose

Above the lighthouse,

She slipped down the cliff

On to the coral shoreline

Sheepishly touched her toes

Into the Irish Sea

Of a distant train’s

Bells and horns

Echoed through the night

Awakening the next morn

Everything seemed strange

A seagull, brogue lass, whispered

Tis the port of Newbury

As she held out her hands

Treats appeared within them

Her skin so smooth and fair

T’ were nigh impossible

To tell

Where she ended

And ice cream began
