Who we are
Scottish CILT was established in 1991 and is Scotland’s National Centre for Languages. Our vision is for a multilingual Scotland where all languages are valued and where lifelong language learning is recognised as a key skill, one that makes a significant contribution towards the creation of a fairer, smarter, more successful Scotland.
Leading on Languages
Our 4 key areas of work:
Professional Development

Promoting Languages
The Strategic Value of the Bacc
• raises the stakes for languages in education on a par with science
• addresses the challenges ahead for Scotland in an increasingly globalised, networked and increasingly multilingual world
• enables our most able linguists to become successful learners, confident individuals, effective contributors and responsible citizens in a multilingual world
The Bacc and CfE • Scores highly against 7 design principles :
challenge and enjoyment: breadth; progression; depth ; personalisation and choice; coherence ; relevance
• Development of skills for learning, skills for life and skills for work , including higher order skills
• Application of skills in new and unfamiliar situations (BTC 5)
• Support for Positive and sustained destinations beyond school (smooth transitions)
CfE is about raising the bar –what better way than via the Bacc?
