The proposed thesis is intended to develop ad-vanced scientic research regarding human and canine interaction studies. It will provide the disabled community in San Diego County with the unique and fascinating experience of work-ing with services and therapy dogs. And nally, it will contribute medical alert and bio-detec-tion dogs to medical facilities in the region.

[LOCATION]
The East Village is the largest neighborhood of downtown San Diego, habituated in the southeast of downtown. Yet, it is the least developed area of the city. It consists of low scale warehouse commercial buildings and old houses. Its habi-tants are a mix of young new professional adults, students, low-income families, unemployed residents, and derelicts. It is a neighborhood that is slowly trying to urbanize. However, a variety of activities are happening, ranging from endeavors at educational institutions to entertainment at Petco Park. Due to its characteris-tics of being known as a commercial area, the advantage here was to approach a zone where people circulate the most to reinforce and activate the venues.

THE NEW SITE FOR THE USGBC ORGANIZATION IS LOCATED IN THE CORNER OF 5TH AVE. AND ASH ST. IN DOWNTOWN SAN DIEGO.
THE FIRST APPROACH TO THE DESIGN WAS TO DISTRIBUTE THE BUILDING INTO THREE CATEGORIES: PUBLIC, SEMI PUBLIC, AND PRIVATE. WITH THIS IDEA IN MIND, THE NEXT STEPS WERE TO CREATE PUBLIC INTERACTION AT ALL TIMES, TO ATTRACT PEOPLE TO ACKNOLEDGE THE ORGANIZATION, AND TO CREATE AN URBAN LIFE INTO THIS PARTICULAR CORNER WHICH HAS BEEN LACKING CIVIC LIFE. THE USGBCS OBJECTIVE IS TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ABOUT SUSTAINABLE DESIGN; BY PROVIDING TRANSPARENCY IN THE FAADE, CREATING A CIVIC AREA, AND RE-TAIL SPACES ON THE FIRST LEVEL, THE GOAL TO ATTRACT PEOPLE IS ACCOMPLISHED.
THE IDEA OF CREATING PUBLIC INTERACTION IS NOT ONLY ACCOMPLISHED IN THE OUTSIDE BUT ALSO INSIDE THE BUILDING. THE CENTER CORE OF THE BUIDLING HAS A LOBBY AREA IN EACH LEVEL FOR THE PUBLIC AND WORK FLOORS; AND AN OPEN DECK AREA IN THE RECIDENCIAL LEVELS, THUS THE RESIDENTS AND EMPLOYEES CREATE A HARMONIC WORK/LIVING SPACE AMONG THEMSELVES.
THE BUILDING COMPROMISES TO ITS SITE IN A GENTLY WAY. THE TWO VERTICAL MID-RISERS OPENS UP THE BUILDING SO IT CAN ALLOW THE NATURAL VENTILATION PENETRATE THE CENTER CORE AND EXPAND THROUGH THE SIDES.
THE GREEN OUTDOOR AREA IN THE CENTER DOESNT ONLY SERVE AS A BALCONY BUT IT MOTIVATES PEOPLE BY PROVIDING THEM WITH NATURE INTERACTION. WE KNOW THERE ARE NOT MANY PARKS IN DOWNTOWN AND IT IS IMPORTANT THAT HUMANS INTERACT WITH NATURE SO THEY CAN ENGAGE IN A POSITIVE ATTITUTE THROUGHOUT THE DAY.
SOME OF THE LEED FEATURES IN THE BUILDING ARE: GREEN TOP ROOF FOR WATERCOLLECTION, ABOUT 65% OF NATURAL INDIRECT LIGHT TO THE WORK AND LIVING AREAS, RECYCLING GARBAGE CHUTE, AUTOMATED VERTICAL FINS SHADING DEVICES IN THE WEST FAADE, AND TINTED GLASS IN THE SOUTH AND WEST ELEVATIONS, AND BALCONIES THAT SERVE AS SHADES.

EAST VILLAGESTUDENT HOUSING CO-OPSAN DIEGO, CAThe mission of the East Village Student Housing Co-op is to provide a quality, low-cost, cooperative housing community to student of the three Educational Institutions: City College, Newschool of Architecture & Design, and Thomas Jeerson School of Law. Students will control the politics and economics of the assets, as well as being responsible to manage and sustain the buildings needs in a democratic approach.
PROGRAM:the building will be divided in three fragmental functions: public retail spaces in the ground level, work spaces facing southwest, and residential units everywhere else.1st level facing south, west, and north will have retail spaces because thus the public will have easy and fast access to it. this area will be activated 24 hours a day. retail spaces such as: bikeshop, cafeteria/restaurant, shops, and a oce supply store.
1st level facing east and north is the entry to the students residence because this is a passive area. .the rest of the levels will have a convination combination of s.o.r, studios, 1 bd & 2 bedroom apartments.2nd and 3rd level facing west side has oce spaces only for students that are starting their own businesses.Top level will have recreational spaces such as a green roof decks, a swimming pool, and a generous size gym to keep students healthy.
The integration of the park on the north side from the building will create an iconic point of encounter. people will be able to identify the center of the neighborhood when they refer to the library and the student resident zone.

S.W.O.T. ANALYSIS
STRENGTH:
the east village neighborhoods important assets are the educational institutions: city college, newschool of architecture & desing, and thomas jeerson school of law.
WEAKNESS:
The building is adjacent to a trolley track; which can cause unpleasant noises. it is stablished in a busy area where pedestrial and vehicular trac occurs during petco game events. also to its south is imperial st. which connects to the i-5 and the 94 fwy; pick hours are between 12pm -2pm and 5pm 7pm.
OPPORTUNITY:
The student co-op is conveniently located walking distance from education institutions. students will have easy accest to main transit terminal, this can encourage students to switch to public transportation thus we eliminate pollution into the city.
THREATS: Derelicts dwell around area.
