SERIOUS ABOUT SPELLING

Whether we like it or not, spelling matters. I have known job applications, for instance, to make it into the ‘NO‛ pile – on the basis of poor spelling. I can guarantee that whenever we have a spelling error or ‘typo‛ in this newsletter, we hear about it.

While technology, such as spell-checks or voice to text programmes certainly assist, being able to spell well is a clear advantage. Being able to identify misspelt words and remedy them is also a valuable skill.

During terms two and three there will be a whole school focus on improving spelling – with a particular emphasis on commonly misspelt words.

Last week we pre-tested students on the forty words that we will be focussing on for the remainder of the term. Results have been collated so that come the end of the term we will be able to measure individual, class, year level and whole school improvement.

Even as adults we can improve our spelling. I think that I got to the age of about 25 before realising that I consistently spelt accommodation (one of the Year 11/12 words for this fortnight) incorrectly. It‛s never too late.

Each fortnight we will have a focus on ten words with separate lists for years 8-10 and years 11/12. These are re-printed on page 2 with some suggested strategies for remembering the ‘tricky‛ parts.

FROM OUR PRINCIPALWe ask that you support our initiative by helping your children practise the words at home.

Parent/teacher/student interviewsThank you to those parents who took the opportunity to come in and meet with teachers earlier this week – either at Kapunda or Roseworthy.

As a teacher, gaining the insight of the family into how the student is travelling is a really valuable thing. Often parents see or know things that help us to do our job better.

If you didn‛t have the opportunity to come in this week and would still like to touch base, please do not hesitate to make contact with our administration offi ce and make appointments.

Have you seen our new website? As part of our goal of connecting better with families, we have recently launched a new website (same address) which we hope will help you access information easily.

A particular feature of the new website is the Principal‛s Blog. Currently there are three short articles (what makes a good teacher, what you think of our grounds development and re-naming buildings) on the blog which invite a response from readers. Ideally, we want to create a space where families and members of our community can contribute ideas that help us to make better decisions about the things that we do at Kapunda High School. Please have a look and if inclined, make a contribution.

Reminder - Pupil Free DayTeachers will be involved in Australian Curriculum planning on the day.

SCHOOL MUSICAL – FOR YOUR DIARY

This year our school is performing an old favourite, ‘BYE BYE BIRDIE‛ The plot is loosely based on the story of Elvis, at the time he was drafted into the army. The hero in this musical is Conrad Birdie, a handsome 1950s rock star, who‛s crafty manager cooks up a scheme to promote him by holding a competition for teenage girls everywhere – one lucky girl gets to give him ‘one last kiss‛ before joining the army. Of course, this creates mayhem and parental outrage in the small town where the winner lives!

The cast and band are busy rehearsing in preparation for what promises to be a fun show. Put these performance dates in your diary:

AUGUST 6, 7 & 8 (WED, THURS & FRI) 7:30 pm in the Kapunda Institute.

Tickets will go on sale late in Term 2 – watch the newsletter for information.

PEDAL PRIX - ROUND ONEWe have entered both the Kometz and Ricochet bikes into Pedal Prix‛s Round One - 2 June, 2013, Victoria Park Race Track, Adelaide. Old scholars, Coppers Chase, has also been entered.

This is going to be an extra special race for Kapunda High School and all entrants, as the track at Victoria Park has been extended and improved. AIPP (Australian International Pedal Prix) has advised that there will be extra entertainment to celebrate the changes to the track.

Everyone is encouraged to come and support the teams at this very important race. Many of the team have not participated in Pedal Prix previously and few have ridden at Victoria Park before. It will be a challenge for all involved. We would like as many helpers as possible. For more information about the Pedal Prix events, see www.pedalprix.com.au.

The Race starts at 9 am so we will need all team members at Victoria Park by 8.30am. Participants who may have diffi culty with their transport arrangements please speak to Mr. McLachlan at school, prior to that weekend. Anyone able to arrive earlier to help set up the pit area, ready for racing, would be appreciated.

We are having a Pedal Prix meeting for all students, parents and anyone interested on Tuesday, 21 May at 7pm at KHS in Room 70. Further details about Pedal Prix will be available at this meeting, including where we will be located at the event. Adelaide City Council has charged parking fees in the past, so please be aware that there will be a cost that is currently unknown.

We have almost 10% of Kapunda High School students coming to all Pedal Prix meetings and they are very enthusiastic. Students are learning many skills, such as teamwork, fi tness, nutrition, responsibility and more.

Some of our students are fundraising for Coppers Chase as this bike is intended to be a ‘fundraiser‛ as well as an opportunity for mentoring the younger riders. If you are asked to support Coppers Chase Pedal Prix bike, please be sure the money is going to be well spent. All money raised by Coppers Chase is supporting the Year 10 Youth Opportunities program and the CPSW program, thus ensuring these valuable programs can continue.

Hope to see you at Victoria Park Race Track for a 6 hour race that will have some exciting times!

KHS Pedal Prix needs a TV

Do you have a Flat Screen TV, up to 81cm that you could donate to the School?

Pedal Prix needs a TV to take to races and access information from race offi cials as they broadcast on a local TV station.

Unfortunately, older, bulky TV sets would not be suitable with having to move it about.

The TV would also be used at the school during the the year.

As a part of Year 9 Society and the Environment, students from Mrs Giuliani‛s class, accompanied by their pre-service teacher, Miss Vogelsang, attended two excursions around the town of Kapunda. The fi rst excursion took place on May 1. Students walked to Gundry‛s Point where they identifi ed iconic and geographical landmarks of Kapunda. From Gundry‛s point the class ventured to the Soldiers‛ Memorial Site on the main street where they researched men and women from the region involved in wartime service. With the second

excursion (May 8), the SOSE class walked to the Clare Road Kapunda Cemetery. The visit to the cemetery provided students with an insight into the birthplaces, backgrounds and lives of people who had lived in the town and its

surrounds over the past one hundred and fi fty years. These excursions were enjoyed by the class and provided a foundation for their further studies into the Kapunda and Barossa region‛s history.

YEAR 8 HISTORYDuring Year 8 SOSE, History class, students wrote a diary entry about ‘A day in the life of a medieval person‛. He chose to write about his life as a knight. The diary date is set is around 1300 Common Era.

IN THE DAILY LIFE OF A KNIGHT!

Dear Diary,

Today I awoke to the sound of an invading army. I got up and ran for my clothes, armour, helmet, sword and shield. My armour consists of chainmail and interlocking iron pads.

I walked into the dining room to see all the other knights scoffing down their breakfast, so I sat down at the oak table and shoved a large chunk of beef into my mouth. It was a bit rough and chewy but apart from that it was good. I took a swig of wine and it was straight off to defend the castle.

All the knights left the table and ran to their positions, either with their bow and arrows taking out enemies one at a time, or with their shields and swords fighting off the enemies as they reached the top of the wall. It was exhausting. I was one of the swordsmen.

My sword is very long and is as sharp as a wolf’s tooth. One of the enemies reached the top of the wall, with one swipe of my sword the opponent’s head came clean off. The blood gushed out like a waterfall and was as red as a radiant sunset.

We had been fighting for nearly three hours and the enemy were nearly defeated. There was about twenty knights left to conquer, the archers slaughtered another ten and then out of the blue the enemy retreated. The fight was over. There was a sigh of relief and a roar of victory. We all prayed that our rivals wouldn’t return. ‘One day, I hope that I won’t have to fight and that there will be peace among us.’

It was now time for a victory feast. All of the remaining knights went to the dining hall where the meal was being prepared. Out came the waiters with pheasant, beef and all the finest fruit and vegetables in the land. They also of course brought out the finest wine. It smelt amazing. We prayed to our gods and then began our banquet. It was like eating heaven. We stuffed ourselves full until no more food could be eaten. In the evening we just relaxed and considered our next battle. At evening’s end I staggered off to bed exhausted, battered and bruised, but satisfied.

YEAR 10 PE

During the last three weeks, my PE class have been going to the REX Centre in Tanunda. In the fi rst week, the girls played squash and the boys did a RPM class (spin class). The second week, we rotated and this week the girls played squash again and the boys did Body Impact.

Squash is a fun game to play. Although, it is a bit confusing at the start, it gets easy as you go along. RPM (Repetitions Per Minute) was a bit of a challenge but kind of fun. Staying to the beat of the music was hard and hurt my knees.

The REX Centre has been a lot of fun and we‛re looking forward to other activities.
