STUDENT LED CONFERENCES- WEDNESDAY 27TH JUNE Where- In your child’s classroom WHAT IS THE STUDENT LED CONFERENCE? Student led conferences are an integral part of the Primary Years programme (PYP) helping students to take ownership and responsibility for their learning. They involve the child and the parent talking together about the learning and are not organised as the traditional parent teacher interview. We hold these conferences in June, to assist students to realise their goals and set new ones for the remainder of the year. On Wednesday 27th June your child will be leading the conference with you and developing their responsibility for their learning by sharing and discussing samples of work they have chosen. Please encourage/ prompt your child as they share their learning with you as we want the Student Led Conference to be successful and purposeful for you and your child. WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE PARENT? Student led conferences enable you to gain a clear insight into the kind of work your child is doing and offers you an opportunity to discuss it with your child. Your child will be in charge of leading you through the conference

A few hints to help you before the conference:

Express positive interest and anticipation about the conference

Be on time

Listen and respond to your child

Express pride in your child’s growth and progress

Recognise that the teacher will be facilitating and not take charge of the

conference.

PURPOSE: Time for your child to shine and share their learning journey so far.

Learn more about your child’s abilities

Review your child’s previous goals and discuss new ones

Ask questions about the portfolio samples.

Comment on the learning demonstrated through the conference, providing

positive feedback.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE TEACHER?

To be a facilitator in the conference process

To be an observer

To help identify strengths and areas for improvement for your child and discuss

future goals

To encourage, praise and support your child.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE STUDENT?

Share their own learning

Set new goals

Evaluate their own progress

Be actively involved

Discuss and reflect on their samples of work with their parents/carer

Identify strengths and areas for improvement

As part of the IB PYP assessment, the Student Led conference represents the value of the student being at the centre of the learning process. The Student Led Conference invites students to be more verbal and take responsibility for their learning. We hope you enjoy this rewarding experience with your child.

Bookings via Compass are open for you to book yourself and your child for the mid-year student led conference to be held on Wednesday 27th June. There is an opportunity for your child to share their learning over the past two terms with you. Your child must accompany you on the day.

Parent Tips UNSTRUCTURED PLAY IS CRITICAL FOR CHILDREN AND THEIR BRAIN DEVELOPMENT- so set them free? Unstructured play is play without predetermined rules of the game. There are no organised teams, uniforms, coaches or trainers. It is spontaneous, often made up on the spot, and changeable as the day goes on. Unstructured play is fun- no question about it- but research also tells us that it is critically important for the development of children’s bodies and brains. Here are five reasons why unstructured play is crucial for your children-

1. It changes brain structure in important ways- Play actually changes the structure of

the developing brain by strengthening the connections of the nerve cells in the

prefrontal cortex of the brain.

2. Play activates the entire neocortex- Research has found that even a half hour of play

affected the activity of genes in the neocortex area of the brain.

3. It teaches children to have positive interaction with others- Play serves to teach

young children how to interact with others in a positive way. It helps build pro social

brains.

4. Children who play are often better students- The social skills acquired through play

may help children become better students.

5. Unstructured play gets children moving-Unstructured play whether running in the

yard or climbing trees, playing in the park helps get the whole body moving. Physical

activity is vital for a healthy mind and body.

It is tempting in today’s busy world for parents to fill their child’s day with every minute of their day with structured activities. We should remember to carve out time for free play, time for children to have fun together with absolutely nothing planned and no particular goals in mind except having FUN! The growing body of research on the benefits of free play suggest that perhaps we should rethink our priorities. PARKING YOUR CAR IN AND AROUND GLENROY WEST PRIMARY SCHOOL It is everyone’s responsibility to keep our children safe. It is shocking to hear the dangerous and reckless practices drivers continuously display in and around the school because everyone is in a hurry. Reports of parents parking across driveways and walk accesses have been coming in. this is unsafe practice and puts our children and others at risk. Please do not park in these areas. We all must work together, be tolerant and patient and obey the road rules. Thank you for your cooperation.

SAME DAY NOTIFICATION OF UNEXPLAINED STUDENT ABSENCES All parents and guardians can access COMPASS to log student absence or otherwise contact the school directly or via the school email [email protected] PLEASE READ THE DET FACT SHEET BELOW Fact sheet for parents/Carers, If your child is sick or absent, you are required to notify their school as soon as possible on the day of absence using one of the following methods-

1. Online Compass

2. Telephone the school office and let the staff know your child’s name, class, date of absence and reason

3. Email the school and provide the same information as stated above.

Why do I need to notify the school if my child is absent? Schools need to know when and why a child is absent and you need to know if your child isn’t at school. From the end of Term 2 2018, all Victorian Government schools are required to contact parents/carers as soon as practicable on the same day of an unexplained student absence. If you have not contacted the school to explain why, the absence will be marked as unexplained.

This system also promotes daily attendance. Going to school daily is the single most important part of your child’s education, they learn new things every day- missing schools puts them behind. What is your responsibility? You are legally required to ensure your child attends school daily or you must provide an explanation for their absence. You should let the school know in advance of any upcoming absences. In order for schools to implement the same day notification requirement, it’s essential that you provide the school with your most up to date contact details. What is the school’s responsibility? The school must notify you of an unexplained absence in relation to your child as soon as practicable on the same day. ABSENCES When your child is absent or late to school we are required to present a reason for the absence to the Department of Education DET. You are welcome to write a note to the class teacher brought to school by your child on their return. There are other avenues you can use to inform us of your child’s absence. A phone call or via Compass is extremely helpful. It is very important that children attend school daily except if they are unwell or in extreme circumstances. We know that every day at school counts! Student Enrolments for 2019 It is very pleasing that high interest is regularly shown at our school. Prospective parents have already begun making enquiries about 2019 places for Foundation students. Enquiries will continue throughout the year and will come from local families, those looking to move into the area and, families from much further afield. Through these encounters, we gain feedback about Glenroy West and information which clearly indicates that our learning environment and practices are held in high regard. Foundation for 2019 This is very important information not just for current parents who will have another child beginning foundation in 2019 but for all members of our school community. Our enrolment policy and how decisions are made about admission to Glenroy West Primary School is public information and as such is detailed in newsletters, information sessions and on our website. If any family has a child to enrol for Foundation 2019, please email the Assistant Principal, Anne Kyriacou- [email protected] or call the school on 9306-8955. Enrolment Packs- Please note the collection of enrolment packs are available at the school office. Enrolment Places for 2019 The demand for places at Glenroy West PS and kindergarten is high. Enrolment forms are located on the school website or alternatively an enrolment form can be obtained from the school office. School Tours are conducted on Tuesday and Thursday from 9.15am. If these days are not suitable we can arrange an alternate day and time for your convenience. A personalised tour with the Principal Pam Streete or Anne Kyriacou Assistant Principal can be arranged at your request. Please arrange a suitable day and time via the office staff.

EVERY DAY COUNTS- ATTENDANCE IT’S NOT OK TO BE AWAY.EVERY DAY COUNTS We are presently reviewing our processes for daily attendance and ‘lateness.’ DID YOU KNOW YOUR CHILD’S BEST LEARNING TIME IS THE START OF THE SCHOOL DAY? THAT’S WHEN EVERY MINUTE COUNTS THE MOST! It is very important to receive notification from parents or guardians when children are absent from school as we have an accountability to the Department of Education. Please use the following methods to inform us and include your child’s name and grade, date and reason for the absence.

Written note

Speak directly to the Classroom teacher. Teachers have a Duty of Care to call parents if a child is absent

more than 2 days.

At Glenroy West Primary School we are committed to providing your child with an excellent education. The building blocks of an excellent education begins with all students coming to school each and every day. Regular school attendance is vital and missing school days can have a big impact on a child’s future. Missing one day a fortnight will equate to missing four full weeks by the end of the year. Each day a student misses school puts them behind and can affect their educational outcomes. Some of the reasons for student absence at GWPS

Staying home to celebrate a birthday

Going shopping

Looking after a sibling

Spending time with a relative

Extended weekends

Overseas travel

Dental and medical appointment

Illness

If for any reason your child must be absent from school, parents or guardians are required to provide written notification, stating the reason for their child’s absence. This information will be retained by the teacher and archived by the school. This is a DET requirement.
