Dear Parents and Friends,
In Term Five we will be welcoming Bath Spa
trainee teacher Ms Barton who is starting her
Final PGCE Experience in Class Two on April
27th.
We are saying goodbye to Ben Knight and his
parents Jo and Paul at the end of this term. We
wish them all the best in their new
surroundings. Ben is looking forward to
welcoming a new arrival in the family later this
summer!
The Olympic Torch
We are looking forward to the arrival of the
Olympic torch in Bath on May 22nd. The torch
will be arriving in Bath after the end of the
school day and we are aware that many parents
will be keen to get into position earlier.
We will follow the official recommendation that
children be registered at 1.30 as usual, and
then any parent who wishes to take their child
to prepare for the arrival will be free to collect
them after that.
This should be a memorable event and worth
attending if possible! Some children will be
participating in an Olympic Morning at St Marks
prior to this event. More details later!
Please note that we are offering children the
opportunity to get creative and design a
Olympic banner for the school. The design can
reflect the spirit of Bathampton and the
Olympics. More details in this newsletter!
School Families & The Olympics
To help children feel more involved in the
Olympics and to broaden our geographical
understanding each of the school families
(houses) now has an additional country to
follow in the Olympics. At a special assembly a
representative from each house picked one of
five countries; Kenya, Australia, China, Canada
and Germany. On Friday 9th March each family
had a special morning during which they learnt
more about their adopted country. Some
children made national flags. The Easter Service
will include some of details of Easter or spring
traditions in these countries.
Anglo-Saxon Invasion Report by Ms Ovigne
2
On Friday 15th March Class Three were visited
by an Anglo-Saxon warrior. The children had
an amazing morning learning about Anglo-
Saxon times. They also found out about rune
stones and made some of their own. During the
break time the children had fun dressing up as
Anglo-Saxon warriors.
For those of you who would like to learn more
about Anglo-Saxon times, Dyrham Park will be
having Anglo-Saxon days on the 2nd and 3rd
June and 14th and 15th July, which I am sure will
prove to be a fun and educational day for all
the family.
Community Police Visit
One Wednesday afternoon Year Five and Six
had a visit from two policemen from Bath Police
Station. They talked about what happens when
they catch a criminal and what they do to them.
They showed us their jackets (and what was
inside them). It was a very exciting visit! Report
by Lottie and Josephine.
Cats’ and Dogs’ Home
Class One have been learning about cats and
dogs. Sheila Reed and her rescue dog
"Louis" came to visit from Bath Cats and Dogs
Home. The children found out about all the
animals they have, how the staff looked after
them and how they can take good care of their
own pets. The class then decided to help out by
donating food for the animals ....(many thanks
for all donations ).
As part of the topic the children have also been
doing some research at home finding out about
the history of pets in their own families. We
have seen some delightful photographs of
favourite pets. Lawrence and his family
produced an elaborate time line going back
three generations with stories included!
Coloured Filters
We are currently involved in research by
Professor John Stein and Roger Hall in which we
hope to trial coloured lenses. Research has
found that some children find it significantly
easier to read when using a coloured lens or a
coloured overlay. If it is possible that certain
children might benefit Mrs Wood will have a
3
chat and offer the opportunity to borrow a lens
for use when reading.
Class Two Year Twos
The Learning Zone allows us to have smaller
teaching groups at times. It’s a perfect space
for teaching and learning! Here the Class Two
Year 2 children are hard at work during a Friday
morning writing lesson.
Class Two goes ‘Underwater!’
On Monday 26th March Class Two travelled to
Bristol Aquarium as part of their topic
‘Underwater’. They had a fantastic visit and
found the experience engaging and rewarding.
Seeing electric eels, tropic fish, and a whole
range of underwater creatures was amazing.
They got to feed turtles and fish with broccoli!
The guide was really impressed by the
children’s knowledge about underwater life!
Visit to Swindon Railway Museum
On Tuesday the 13th of March Class Four went
to the Steam Museum in Swindon dressed as
Evacuees. The first work shop that the class
went to was called ‘Evacuation’ where children
learnt what it felt like to be an evacuee. For the
second workshop they went into a public Air
Raid Shelter and learnt what happened inside
the shelter. Then they had a wartime rationed
lunch.
Next they did a ‘Make do and Mend’ workshop
and a drama workshop; after that they did a
workshop where they played with toys and
asked former evacuees questions. A fun day
was had by all the tired evacuees.
Reported by: Rowan, Robin and Louis
Class Four also acted out a story from World
War 2. Everyone took part, even Ms Johnson
played the part of a headmistress.
It was about a family that was happy before the
4
war began. Suddenly their lives were turned
upside down. The sons were sent to war so the
three daughters went to work; one went to
work on a farm, one worked as a typist and the
last one became a pilot in the Royal Air Force.
The mum stayed at home and did house work
like; cleaning, washing, dusting and ironing.
Their dad (Bill) stayed as a train driver to help
evacuate children.
In the end Class Four had a great time doing
the drama workshop, furthermore, they learnt
how hard it was to live in the war.

Sing- long
On Tuesday 20th Class Four walked to
Bathampton Manor dressed as evacuees to sing
WW2 songs to residents. Ellie described
receiving a ‘warm welcome’ from the staff, and
how they were shown to a ‘bright sunny room’
to sing. The Chair of the Home wrote to
compliment the children in their diction both in
speaking and listening. She wrote that the
residents would remember the visit for a long
time to come. Sylvia Perry, who helped organise
the visit, also wrote a thank you letter praising
the children singing and including a kind
donation from the Home for the School.
Dance Umbrella
Congratulations to the Dance group who took
part in Dance Umbrella at the Forum on
Thursday 22nd March. The six children created
their own dance and despite the small size of
the group their sincerity, hard work and skill
was apparent to the enthusiastic crowd. Thanks
to Mrs Lake for her support with this project!
Table Tennis
For the first time we took part in a competitive
table tennis tournament. This was at St.
Saviour’s. Of the three matches played St.
Saviour’s won two and Bathampton won one.
Thomas Morgan and Dillon Pike were joint ‘Men
of the Match’, and Ben Franks did very well
being unbeaten in his games.
KES Skills Day Report by Anya Gordon.
‘On Monday 5th March Class Five arrived at King
Edward’s School to attend a skills’ day. Boys
had a go at hockey, and the girls tried netball.
5
It was a memorable day. In the morning the
training was useful as we had a breath taking
tournament in the afternoon! After an
exhausting day everyone couldn’t wait to relax!
An email from Mrs Edmund says it all! Sent: 05
March 2012 20:48 Subject: KES Sports Day
‘Just to let you know the children were all
fantastic today at the hockey and netball skills
day at KES. They listened carefully to the
coaches and participated with real enthusiasm.
Elise, Lottie and Oliver were all nominated as
players who stood out in their teams from the
tournament this afternoon and won themselves
a medal’. Well done Class Five!
Long Distance Running
On Friday 24th February Class Five took part in
a new initiative; a Year 5 ‘cross-country’ event
at St Mark’s. It was hard work but we did very
well. Heidi White, Jim Nankivell and Elise Maylor
were all in the top ten. An impressive result as
there were a lot of schools taking part.
Football
There have been some great football matches
this term with the main team playing and
beating Bathford. Some took part in a
tournament at St Marks where we lost one,
drew one and won one. The younger mainly Y3
& 4 team also beat Bathford. Thanks to
manager David Howard for his help and
expertise!
Good luck to Edward Cook and Josephine Lye
who will be appearing in this production at the
Wroughton Theatre in Alice in Wonderland
between the 11th and 14th April. Josephine
recently took part in a three hour Zumba-
Marathon!
Collecting younger children
Do you collect younger children from school?
Could you please ensure you are able to see the
member of staff letting your child go at the end
of the day. We need to make eye contact in
order to be able to let the child go. Thanks for
this!
Olympic Banner Design Competition
We are taking part in the Primary Schools Arts
Festival 2012 and the first of this year’s events
is Olympic Banner Making. The idea is that
schools make a banner reflecting the Olympics
which can be carried at various summer
celebrations. We are encouraging children to
create a design that captures the spirit of
Bathampton and of the Olympics.
The closing date for entries is Monday 16th
April so children will have the Easter holidays to
perfect their designs. Children can work alone
or in a team with friends or siblings. The
children with the best designs will get to help
make the banner next term.
Bath City FC Easter Holiday club
6
The clubs are on 10-12th April, 9.30-3.00.
10th & 11th at Culverhay and on 12th at
Twerton Park stadium. They are keen to
increase participation from girls and have
recruited some female coaches from Bath
University to support this year’s Easter
School. All children will have the opportunity
to play and train with professional players from
Bath City FC and everyone will receive a medal.
Message from the friends
Thank you to everyone who supported our school quiz in March at which we raised £450 that will go towards improvements to our school. Special thanks go to our quizmaster, Mr Johnny Branston, who kindly gave up his Friday evening, and to Sunita and Raj (grandparents to Dillon and Lucas Pike) for supplying us with authentic Indian snacks during the interval. They were delicious!
This year we shall be joining forces with the local community for an extra special Summer Fair to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. It will be held on Saturday 16th June and will be a day to remember, so please put it in your diary, and join us in the festivities.
If you think you can spare a little time to help us with the organisation, or have any ideas or suggestions for the event, please come along to our planning meeting on Monday 23rd April at school, or contact Sue Christley or Hannah Isaac. We would love to hear from you.
