therapist to find out moreabout her amazing training

MainstreamEnvironment.
Jodie told us that “72% ofdiagnosed Au4s4c Children
are educated in mainstreamseLngsandmanymoreareflyingundertheradarof
discovery, so it’s paramount that prac44oners feelthey have the knowledge to support and spot the
signsthatachildmaybestruggling.
I have developed this program alongside parents ofAu4s4cchildrenandit’sfullofuptodateinforma4on
aboutanever-evolvingareaofresearch."
Whydidyoudecidetoputtheworkshoptogether?
“I decided to develop a workshop because I was
finding myself giving the same informa4on to bothschool staffandparents,who Iwasdirectlyworking
with,4meand4meagain.Parentswerefindingitsorelatable and could see how the issues discussed
couldwellbeimpac4ngtheirchildren’swell-being.It
thereforemadesensetocollatethisinforma4onandsharewith anyonewho comes into contactwith an
Au4s4c child. It soon became clear that very fewmembersofstaffinmainstreamschoolshaveAu4sm
specifictraining."
Whatareyouhopesfortheworkshop?
“For the awareness of our children’s needs to
become general knowledge amongst school staff. Imeet many children who are trauma4sed by their
school experience andwho are school refusing and
there are so many small things that could behappeninginschoolsthatwouldhaveabigimpacton
the well-being and learning of au4s4c children. Iwould love for Au4sm training to bemandatory for
allmainstreamschoolstaff-It’samassiveambi4on!”

“We used ours about 2
months ago at the GWH.
Staffwereamazing,askedme if I needed anything,
offered a quiet space formy son and took us
straightin.Reallyfriendly,
I cannot fault them. Wealso used ours at Bristol
airport who were alsoamazing. First on the plane, straight to the front of
thequeue,andthiswasthewholefamily.Theywere
brilliant. We even had a lady wai4ng for us indepartures and on the way back from Spain, the
same support - I have two lanyards; one in his bagandonekeptinthecar-Welovethem!”

They gave us aseparate room
towaitinandthe

“We used ours at A&E. The recep4on, triage staffand doctor were all great. The children’s A&E
wai4ngroomwasrammed,buttheyletussitinthe
adults wai4ng area, which was the best op4onavailable. TheDr. then carried out the consulta4on
in a quiet cubicle in the adult area. Really posi4veexperience and the Dr. acknowledged the lanyard
withmyson-Theyhadquiteagoodchataboutit!”

a lanyard and put asunflower s4cker on his
paperwork tohighlighthisdisability.Wewereseenby
a nurse who put him at
ease and in x-ray the radiologist was aware of hisdisability and acted appropriately. He had to go to
theatreforacast.Hewasdistressedwhenhavinghisanaesthe4c,buteveryonedealtwithhimextremely
well. The recovery staffwere aware that hewould
notrespondwhenhewokeandensuredthathefeltsafeun4l Iarrived.Theyaskedmelotsofques4ons
to make sure he was ok and to confirm that hisbehaviourswerenormalashecameto.Ontheward
they got him some cereal especially for him, as he
won'teatthesandwicheswhichotherswereea4ng.The staff throughout were incredible. For a child
whostruggleswithchange,bright lightsand lotsofpeople,weweremeltdownfreeandIbelievethatis
downtothewayhewasdealtwiththroughoutthis
ordeal……..THANKYOUGWH!”

What does ‘Good’ Look Like in Other Areas? We took a trip to two mainstream schools in Bristol that have a
reputa4on for excellent SEND provision. Our parent representa4veMichelle Lloyd, Jayne Smith a SEND Commissioner at Swindon
BoroughCouncilandPaulDobsonfromSwindonSTEP,spentthedaytalking to staff and learning
about theschoolsandwere
on a mission to find outwhat we can learn from
them to report back toSwindon Borough Council.
Via our Facebook page we
asked families what theywouldlikeustolookoutfor
andwhatques4onstoask.Theygaveusquitealist!
AlmondsburyisanOutstandingratedprimaryschool.Theytoldusall
the staff are trained to think that every child may have SEND, so
reasonable adjustments are just secondnature. Somechildren takepart in a ‘Sensory Circuit'where they run off energy using sensory
equipmenthelpingthemgetsetupfortheday.Communica4onwithfamiliesisveryopen.Theyhaveabuddyingsystembetweenyear6's
andotherchildren.Thebuddysupportsachildthatneedsextrahelp
un4ltheyfeelreadytobeindependent.Thebuddiessupport inthemornings, play4me and lunch so they become a friendly face for a
child that might otherwise find school difficult. All staff (includingMDSAs, TAs, office staff etc) have training in ASD, AYachment
DisorderandDyslexia,amongstothers.
Downend Secondary Academy helps the transi4on to year 7 byvisi4ngstudentswithSENDinyears4,5and6,sotheygettoknow
the students early on.Before they start they can come in and takephotosoftheschoolsotheyarefamiliarwiththenewsurroundings.
TheschoolalsoaYendstheannualreviewmee4ngsinyears5and6.
Differentstrategies theyuse includePupilsPassportsandgreen/redcardsthataidcommunica4onbetweenteachersandstudents.They
also have a specially made uniform available that meets sensoryneeds.

The New Local Offer Website
The Local Offer is a website that has informa4on
about local SEND services, policies, procedures,informa4on and support. This new website will
replacethecurrent 'MyCareMySupport'sitethat iscurrentlyavailable.
Thewebsitehasbeenco-producedwithparentsand
carers,childrenandyoungpeople,whoallhadasayinwhattheywantedthenewwebsitetolooklike.We
asked what Swindon families thought about thepictures and they overwhelmingly said they would
prefersimpleiconsaspictures,ratherthanthephotos
that are currently in place, as they would be moreaccessible. Whilst this has not been possible to
develop for the ‘go live' date for the new plauorm,thiswillbetakenforwardfortheongoingaccessibility
developmentsforthesite.
Astronger feedbackfunc4onwillalsobeavailable inthe new plauorm to beYer collect feedback and
communicate with users. We look forward toexploringthesiteonceitislive!

So,what has Carol achieved in her role that has
made themost significant difference to Swindonhealthcare?
She said; "We’ve recently finished our ‘QualityCheckers’ project. We worked with Swindon
Advocacy Movement (SAM) to train four of their
volunteers, all ofwhomhave a learning disability,to carry out ‘Enter and View’ visits and ‘quality
check’ eight doctor’s surgeries and two dentalprac4cesinSwindon.Thepurposeofthevisitswas
to look at how the services were run from the
perspec4ve of someone with lived experience ofa learning disability. Some of the areas inspected
were 'Access to the building' and 'Whetherinforma4on was being provided in an accessible
format'.Afinal reportwith recommenda4onswas
thensenttoeachoftheservicesforcommentsandac4on.
We loved working with the volunteers from SAMand think this sort of work is vital to influence
services as we know that people with learning
disabili4es facemul4plehealth inequali4es.We’rekeen to replicate the ‘Quality Checkers’ work we
did with SAMwith children and young people aswell and are looking for funding opportuni4es to
enableustodothis–Sowatchthisspace!”
Healthwatch HaveyouheardofHealthwatch?
Similar to what we do as a Parent Carer Forum,HealthwatchSwindonaretheindependentchampion
forpeopleusinglocalhealthandsocialcareservices.They listen to what people like about services and
what couldbe improved and share their viewswith
thosewiththepowertomakechangehappen.Theyalso share them with Healthwatch England, the
na4onalbody,tohelpimprovethequalityofservicesacrossthecountry.Peoplecanalsospeaktothemto
findinforma4onabouthealthandsocialcareservices
available locally. Our sole purpose is to help makecarebeYerforpeople.
We asked Carol Willis, the Healthwatch SwindonTeam Manager, how does Healthwatch benefit
parentsandcarersinSwindon?
She told us; "We’re here to speak to and support
anyone in Swindon who wants to feedback about
their experiences ofhealth and social
care – good or bad.We then tell service
p r o v i d e r s a n d
commissioners whatwe’ve heard so that
s e r v i c e s c a n b eimproved. We know
fromrecentworkwe
have carried out onthe NHS Long Term
Planthatpeoplewithau4smspectrumdisorderoralearning disability, for example, have a very mixed
experienceof health services. This is oyendown to
longdelaysingeLngcorrectdiagnosesandagenerallack of understanding of what these condi4ons are
andhow they impact an individual and their family.Theseissueswerehighlightedinasubsequentreport
andwe’repushingformoretobedoneaboutthis.”

I am Rebecca, I'm inmy early 30s and have three children allwith differentaddi4onal needs including ASD, ADHD, Dyspraxia, Dyslexia and Anxiety. I am
marriedtoUanwhoisaTAinasecondaryschoolinSwindon,heworksinthephysical disability hub there. We met whilst working in a social work team
together.
I am a qualified social worker and currently work as a support worker ineduca4on.We love being together as a family unit and spend our free 4me

Iwouldpersonallyliketoseeadifferentwayofworkinginrespecttohealthandsocialcare.Ibelieve
weshouldhaveastandalonediagnos4ccentreforneurologicalcondi4onsmuchlikeinAdultservices.Thiswouldbesupportedbyasocialcarearmthathaveaseparatecentreforongoingayercare,respite
andbehaviouralsupport.
Tomymindweneedalargediagnos4ccentrethatcouldcompleteanassessmentperchildwithinsixweekswhichthenclosedthecaseandreferredthechildthroughtothesocialcarecentre.Ibelieveina
