14. AOB

Discussion regarding Club rules. Club rules were shown from 2004 where it was started that the honorary positon of President “to be held no more than two consecutive years”. Should this rule or similar be included in the club rules review?

Further discussion regarding purchasing digital tag timing equipment for 30 riders. Start-up cost would be approximately £5000. It is a relatively expensive asset but if it makes running club events easier and more accurate it should be considered. Also would a 2 way radio system be helpful? Many other cycling and sporting clubs have this facility? DJ to look at costings.

Deans in Mallorca 2018: Mandy & Neil Dean

For the first time we were not staying in Arenal but in Port de Pollenca at the Fergus Pollensa Park Spa Hotel. The hotel was very large but the staff were friendly and it had good facilities. The food was excellent and the sauna was used frequently. Spring was late but with temperatures around 16C and sunny it was spot on. Here is a sample of our holiday.

Day 1 – Cap de Formentor and Lluc: 63 miles, 6330ft climbing

Excellent day out. Warm but a bit windy. It was fabulous, my first time at Cap Formentor– great roads, great temperature, and great route. I was very pleased to manage the 100k hilly ride. Lunch at Lluc and a short wander around the monastery.

Day 2 - Arta: 72miles, 3300ft climbing

Another lovely ride barring the very windy conditions. 45 miles to lunch (I was knackered by then). Mostly backwind – at times doing 30mph whilst barely turning the pedals! Lovely route, quiet lanes. Nice lunch café at Arta.

Hung onto Neil’s wheel as he battled the head wind home. He almost lost the will to live in the last few miles. There was no respite along the coast!

Day 3 – Parting of the ways

Neil went on a solo ride to Alaro to the cafe at the bike shop served by the pretty girl. Out via Campaneta, Selva and Llosetta. Return via Santa Maria and some drizzle: 60 miles, 2,600ft climbing.

Running adventure for me (Yorkshire 3 Peaks Fell Race looming). Bus to Alcudia then ran up Talaia the highest peak on the Alcudia Peninsula. 13.1 mile, 3,100ft climbing. Lots of steep ups and downs and rocky underfoot (taking care!). Shame it was cloudy but plenty warm enough for running.

Day 4 - Rest day

Both had very tired legs! For me a short recovery ride (10 miles, 440ft climbing) and being a tourist in Pollenca – roman bridge, hairpin road lined with massive stone crosses big church at the top with a view down the 365 steps.

For Neil a 25 mile recovery ride with 1,250ft climbing on local lanes with a trip to the Alcudia lighthouse. However, the road was closed at a tunnel so the closest he got was just over a mile away. But he got some good views:

Day 5 – Sa Calobra or Rest

Neil and Paul Campbell joined Kris Philpotts for the Sa Calobra ride. 63 miles, 6,600ft climbing. Neil disappointed with his legs. Paul comfortably beat him up the climb. 300 miles cycling in 5 days taking its toll … easy day tomorrow.

Easy day for me as not well – bad night with nausea and headaches. Rested and slept and went for a walk along the beach then into town. Port Pollenca appears to be beach, marina, shops, restaurants, accommodation.

Day 6 – Campanet – Muro (40 miles, 1,800ft climbing)

An easy and lovely ride for both. Neil for recovery me poorly (2am being sick). Good to get out. I struggled with energy as not eaten much for 48 hours. But enjoyed the beautiful warm conditions Lovely route out - lots of little back lanes. The return coast road back is a little dull but no other option.

Day 7 – Orient–Soller–Puig Major Massive day planned and I hoped to climb Orient and Soller then return for lunch at Bunyola then back. I had started eating again so had hopes of having enough energy. It didn’t work out and I started to struggle and feel nauseous after about 15 miles and called it a day at Alaro but still managed 50.8 miles with 2,750ft climbing. Took a photo of the group: Becky, Neil, Mark, Paul and Ben, then had a lovely return home with downhill and backwind, stopping to take photos. Pleased with 50 miles, though disappointed not fully recovered yet.

Neil: After Col d’Orient and Col d’Honor we stopped at Bunyola for a drink and all succumbed to a slab of almond cake. While descending from Col d’Honor Paul had a close shave with a car coming up the hill and overtaking a group of riders - it only just got out of the way before he mounted the bonnet.

Over Col Soller and the long descent to Port de Soller. Ate at the harbour – pasta or pizzas (plus apple pie for Mark). The Puig was as big as ever. Neil and Paul took 54 minutes to the tunnel, Ben 58, Becky and Mark 65. Uneventful ride back with cute donkeys in the road, thankfully on an uphill section. 86 miles with 8,200ft climbing

Day 8 – Randa – 76 miles, 4,080ft

Another fab day. I wasn’t confident as still not fully well (don’t ask!) but as just the two of us and Neil not wanting an epic I knew we would return if I was struggling. I had a couple of tough times on the way out. We rested and reviewed at Algaida but I really wanted to get up to Randa … so we did. Neil planned a great route along lots of back lanes, some of which we knew well from previous years. The out journey was mainly headwind but the temperature was good – about 16C. We climbed steadily up Randa and I felt fine.

It was really busy with cyclists at the top so I suggested we ate in Montuiri. We flew down the 8 miles and after a little confusion through town found a café and had a feast of Spaghetti Bolognaise and Pizza. The return home from there was on fabulous back lanes until reaching Sa Pobla which we by-passed then 4 miles on the Pollenca main road before the final 5 miles on our local back lanes. Great day.

Day 9 – Run & Recovery Day Neil had a short recovery ride – 13miles taking in the sights of Pollenca which included the Pont Roma, Calvari Hill (with the big crosses) and looking down the 365 steps where he saw people running up (madness). Me, feeling OK so decided on a running day and Cala Sant Vicenc was suggested. Run out was a couple of miles on main road (gravelly path well away from traffic) pleasant enough with mountains ahead. Smaller road to the town – very pretty bays (photo front page). Over the ridge to run back, through burnt mini palm trees which got me covered in charcoal! That’s a first! All worked out - got my run in, came back safe. 10.25 miles, 660ft climbing. Rest of the day spent shower, eating, relax, sauna. Another good day

Day 10 (sadly final day) – Valldemossa 87 miles, 7,500ft climb Tough but fab final day. Head wind and climbing pretty much all the way to lunch at Valldemossa. First climb was Lluc then the lumpy road over to the Puig climb.

Jackets on and banana/choc croissant before heading through the (wind!) tunnel and the long descent to Soller. The headwind made it relatively slow, Neil’s max speed 40mph. Chilled off and glad to start the climb out of Soller and

over to Deia. The climb out of Deia was hard going. Was feeling rather broken when we finally pedalled into Valldemossa. Hot sandwiches and some very nice spiced tea for lunch. The 40 mile return journey was thankfully as expected - downhill and backwind. Neil again plotted a perfect back road route and we shot home (avg pace at Valldemossa 12.4mph, 14.7mph by home).

Lovely and sunny by the time we got back. Despite being tired it is sad we have to go home tomorrow. Will miss this view from our balcony. We had 11 days of this …. Warmest day 20C, Coolest day 14C. We’ll be going back in 2019 … just too good to miss.

Gospel Pass with Jet McDonald: Chris Devaney

Bearing in mind the recent weather, arranging a ride in the Black Mountains of south Wales for the last day of March a few weeks in advance, was, with hindsight, asking for trouble. A week prior to the planned day of riding with Jet, and the forecast looked bad. A few days before, it looked really bad. The day before, it looked horrendous. Excitedly equipped with a new rain jacket (sad, isn’t it?) that I was keen to try out, I travelled down to Wales in torrential rain. Jet and I exchanged texts, with similar themes, putting a brave face on the prospects of the ride. Jet’s past cycling experience, which included riding to India and back, meant I was keen to not bottle out, whatever doom the forecasters might predict. Saturday came, and… well, our luck was in. I got wetter walking to the car to get my helmet than I did in four hours of riding. The road north towards the mountains from Abergavenny is a steep opener. More than a few people, apparently, are put off after this first quarter of a mile or so through Welsh suburbia, but it soon opens up into quiet, single lane countryside, in the shadow of the Sugar Loaf, the southernmost peak of the Black Mountains. Just when we’d got warmed up, we came across the 12th Century remains of Llanthony Priory. The promise of a pint of their finest handpull in the bar proved too tempting. Minding my head on the roof of the cellar bar, a low concrete room converted from a 13th century crypt, we chatted to the owner about the number of “you lot” (cyclists) he gets in there. Apparently some are “pretty hard core”, and have been known to do “60 or 70kms in a day”…

A few miles further up the road lies Capel Y Ffin, a picturesque chapel and cemetery, which we risked clip clopping through the mud in our cleats to visit. Apparently the Virgin Mary has appeared here to monks and local farmers, although on the day we were there she must have been busy elsewhere (it was Easter weekend after all).

The higher we climbed, the temperature noticeably dropped. We began to see snow on the peaks, and wondered if we would encounter much of the white stuff higher up. Safe to say the answer to that was yes. The road steepened at this point, before we emerged out of the trees into the snow. As we climbed towards the peak, the snow got thicker all around us, but thankfully was restricted to light slush on the road. Sheep, somewhat typically, lined the route through the mountains, but we were surprised to see what looked like ponies galloping through the snow on Hay Bluff, the adjacent peak. Apparently ‘Welsh cobs’ have been living wild there since Roman times. We reached the high point of the road, at 549m the highest in Wales, and stopped for ubiquitous snow and scenery pictures. At this point in the distance, as we stood with cold, wet feet in the Welsh snow, the clouds parted and sun streamed down on the panoramic view of England below us. Then, on passing between Hay Bluff and the opposite mountain (known locally, and affectionately, as Lord Hereford’s Knob), we began the fast descent into Hay on Wye. Hay is a pretty town that wears its literary festival-host credentials on its sleeve; themed bookshops are ten a penny, as are trendy café-cum-restaurants, or, in the case of the one we chose for lunch, café-cum-antiques shop. No carb heavy patty butties on offer here I’m afraid; it was a choice between soup, a ‘buddha’ bowl (no, me neither), or avocado on toast. That choice seems quite a good metaphor for the place, really. So somewhat refreshed and fully replenished (the giant homemade hot cross buns made up slightly for the lack of stodgy carbs), we set off to take a rolling route back to Abergavenny. Unfortunately, Jet and I got a bit carried away with a heated debate about the amount of politics in post-Mermaid Avenue Billy Bragg albums, and took a wrong turning. Instead of a rolling route back over the border into south Wales, we ended up doing something of a ridge ride, involving another significant climb, before plateauing, and a gentle glide back into South Wales. For those interested, more information about Jet’s forthcoming book about philosophy and his cycling adventures to India (and beyond) can be found at his website https://jetmcdonald.com/

MUDDY WATERS - The Gerries ride (28-3-18): John Ulyatt

Today's ride was to The Dunn Deal cafe at Nettleton, Nr. Caistor. 23 of us met at The Humber Bridge Car Park and split into The Peleton and The Autobus. We had a new chap join us today, Steve Warren (not local though - from Plymouth). The BIG BOSS MAN for today was Paul Bilyard. The WEATHERGIRLS were kind to us and the opposite of NINE BELOW ZERO, viz +9c - Yipee! We headed over the MUDDY WATERS of the river on the bridge which never fails to impress with the wonderful (OTIS) SPANN of the structure between the towers. A left turn over the bridge past the renovated (JIMMY) REED Hotel and up Cardiac Attack Hill. We took a (JOHN LEE) HOOKER right at the top for a fast descent down (THE BEAUTIFUL) SOUTH Ferriby Hill and straight onto Horkstow (where the world famous horse painter George Stubbs once resided) into Saxby ALL SAINTS, (SIMON LE) BONBY, Worlaby to Brigg and then along the Belgianesqe canal to CADNEY (AND LACEY), Howsham and along the Roman Road to Caistor and onto lunch at Nettleton. Mushroom soup, 2 slices of BREAD and a Pot of Tea = £6.10 - Good value, hardly a (LANCE) FORTUNE. Tough start to our ride home climbing the steep hill out of Caistor to the Radio Mast. The roads back to Barton via the AIRPORT at Kirmington were full of potholes....CRAZY. New (BUDDY) GUY Steve was struggling here so we re-grouped at The Bridge and eased him across to The (VIDEO KILLED THE RADIO) STAR Inn at Willerby for a couple of pints of Wainwrights. LITTLE MIX birthday today so FREE pint. Thanks Mick. Amazingly Mally W turned up at the pub!! Hee Hee!! Once again a lovely day and plenty of laughs in the pub. Home for a soak listening to TuneIn Radio 181.FM True Blues. My mum, bless her, got me into The Blues when I was 14. She loved Muddy, Jimmy Reed and Etta James etc. Just the 57 miles today on an increasingly sunny day - A PERFECT DAY. PS (I LOVE YOU) I went to this gig pictured.

A Wednesday in Hell (well East Yorkshire) (4-4-18): Geoff Rawson

After a bank holiday weekend of torrential rain and burst rivers and streams I set off early, still on my winter bike, mudguards and lights flashing away to meet the Wednesday group at Gangstead for a proposed ride to Boynton. Riding alongside the River Hull to Tickton I could see the house boats floating above head height which felt a bit strange, as usually you cannot even see them, and the river inches from the top of the banks with water flooding the back road. I then cycled down to Meaux and across Wawne common, all flooded and in places over ankle deep in muddy water, so I was unclipping and lifting my feet high to keep my feet dryish. At the meet point in Gangstead the group set off with our runs leader, Mick Adams, keeping the pace high and us all chasing to get on. “Crickey a very early break up the road.” I joked when we all regrouped on the Swine road. Flying along with a strong backwind a few shouts and joking words to our two non mudguarded riders. “Are you skint can’t you afford mudguards?” and “Get to the back mucky buggers.” we whizzed through muddy puddles on the back roads to Long Riston and then down towards Cattick. Mud splashed faces it was looking like a classic Paris Roubaix day. Pot holes and rough surfaces peppered the roads as we flew over to North Frodingham past the burst river bank. Flooded fields had us all gaping at the amount of water about. The strong back wind and Micky (Terspstra) Adams and Harry (Phil Gilbert) still stretching the peloton of eleven riders out. The sun was out and an unanticipated rise to 12.5C had us all sweating and chatting away. A brisk climb from Nafferton to Kilham kept the sweat pouring and the chatter flowing: “Who will win on Sunday?” “Well the way Mick Adams is going my monies on him” one geriatric joked. Along Woldgate in a strong cross wind and the temperature dropping we could see rain clouds in the distance. Bumpy, muddy, potholed roads again more cobbles we said good training for Sunday’s race.

A quickly served dinner in the potting shed at Boynton and Mick had us setting off to beat the rain he expected soon. Out of Boynton village and up the steep gravel covered climb back to

Woldgate we were joined by Rob Stones for a few miles who made a break for it up the climb but was swiftly brought back to our group. (He waited at the top for us really but it doesn’t sound as good does it? No.) Down to Kilham and sharp left down a road under an inch of mud and slippery at that to Lowthorpe. It felt like we were riding on the famous Belgium muddy roads now. Noel and Dave hit the front into a strong head wind and the pace remained high enough for some grumbles about knocking one off (we never use the words slow down - too humiliating).

Soon the miles passed and dark clouds all around but we were still dry over to Burn Butts, a few drops felt until we had two chains un-ship as we cycled up to the main Etton cross roads which gave the rain time to finally catch up but no problem as we are nearly home. The eleven became five as Steven had to get back to Skidby to collect his car and drive back to York after setting off at 7.30 am to drive around the flooded city to meet us - that’s dedication for you - and others joined him . I left the lads in Beverley as they made their way to the pub in Dunswell for a pint. A route everyone agreed was a good un. No doubt made more pleasing by keeping away from the rain and having some warmer temperatures Looking forward to Sunday’s Paris Roubaix, my favourite one day road race. And after today’s bumpy muddy ride I can feel like I know how the pros will feel.

GOOD DAY SUNSHINE –The Beatles (18-04-18): John Ulyatt

We split into our usual 2 groups and HERE COMES THE SUN - Yipee! As The Gerries met 10am at The Humber Bridge for a (TICKET TO) RIDE across the river to The Dunn Deal Cafe at Nettleton Nr. Caistor. Wish we could have weather like this for EIGHT DAYS A WEEK (My Fave Beatles track). Our leader for the day was Billy Whizz as we set off over the bridge and up the (FOOL ON THE) HILL. 'Are we ALL TOGETHER NOW'?, someone shouted. 'I'VE GOT A FEELING that Kitch is struggling today' but all to no avail as Billy and the others disappeared into the distance leaving 5 of us to find our own way to the cafe, battling our way into a headwind with little HELP. Onward through Croxton and past Kirmington airport where we hangered (get it?!!) right to Grasby and onto the Roman Road which led to Caistor and then the cafe. First time we've sat outside since September and it was glorious - Toasted Teacake/Scone/Tea =£6.00. The weather was GETTING BETTER by the minute and we languished for well over an hour in the sun. 'Shall we GET BACK'? said Dick as he took us on a MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR of the Lincolnshire lanes. We went HERE THERE AND EVERYWHERE via Gt. Limber, Brocklesby, Thornton Curtis and into Barrow. Kitch was suffering again - IT WON'T BE LONG' I said as we headed over the bridge to the (RINGO) STAR Inn at Willerby for 3.15pm. The Legend Ray Robson (soon to be 91!) was in the pub after been out on his bike with Terry Jackson. What a guy! It was no-ones BIRTHDAY today so we had to buy our own. A couple of pints of Wainwrights went down a treat and it certainly was not SGT. PEPPERS LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND as the pub was buzzing and lots of banter and laughing. Nice to see Adam Irwin in the pub. I'LL FOLLOW THE SUN all day in weather like this. Just the 57 miles miles today.

Home for a linger in the bath listening to TuneIn radio 181.FM - The Beatles. Fab.

Hull Thursday Youth Circuit Racing: Doug Jaram

The idea for a youth series was actually born out of the Cliff Pratts Deca crit series. People were asking about racing for their children but there was no room in the programme to accommodate them. The only way we could do it was to organise a separate series and I contacted the highly experienced Richard Guymer, who just so happened to be the club coach and held various qualifications in respect of youth coaching. Richard offered to help with the series and we discussed the various formats upon which it could be undertaken. We came up with three Saturdays in July when the weather was most likely to be favourable. The series will be run under the British Schools Cycling Association. We are grateful for the two series sponsors who are on this occasion Cliff Pratt Cycles of Spring Bank Hull and Jobes cycles of Anlaby Road Hull. Both of these shops offer a range of bikes and accessories for adults and children alike so please support your local bike shops!

There will be different sorts of racing on the day but will be essentially focused on having fun and encouraging kids coming forward into adult racing. It's all very well us all having fun but what about the future of the sport. Please support the events as much as possible by encouraging your own kids or others you know to enter or at least spread the word. I have a supply of ‘printed out’ promotional leaflets

but they are of limited supply and I would encourage people to distribute the electronic version which I can send to you directly if you email me (details on the bottom of the leaflet) Kids between the age of 8 and 15 years old can enter on any roadworthy bike, it does not have to be a racing bike but you must wear a helmet. There are toilets and changing facilities within the leisure centre itself which is a short walk away but I would encourage people to come ready so you know you have got everything. Bring some drinks and some food to keep you going throughout the morning. You can just turn up on the day and pay £5 per rider but to assist in event organisation please pre-book your entries with me. There is no deposit or payment until the day.

City RC’s session, Ennerdale (28-03-18): Lee Coulson – taken from Facebook

Chris Deveney, Phil McCormick and Andy Carroll Joined in on City RC’s session on Ennerdale tonight. There were around 20 people on track with between 3 & 8 joining in with some ‘team pursuits’ efforts and finishing with sprints. Some serious hailstone for a few minutes.

Thanks to Phil and Andy for really working me towards the end 👏

Hull Thursday TT Series: Bubwith 10 (24-03-18): Paul Kilvington

After 3 false starts the local time trial season finally got underway on Saturday afternoon at Bubwith. After 3 consecutive cancelled events I'm sure this was a relief to local riders who have undoubtedly been training hard all winter. Conditions were good, although not quite the balmy conditions we got for this event last year. Temperatures were reasonable and there was very little wind with the steam form the nearby cooling stations rising almost vertically. Out on the course there was a slight NE breeze resulting in the last leg to the finish been slightly wind assisted but it was very marginal. John Brearley started this season in the same style he finished last season (also on this course) and won the event with a very quick 21.08. This is the second quickest time recorded on this course and only World champion Adam Duggleby has gone quicker with a 20:18 In second place was Neil Cleminshaw with 21:34 and in 3rd place Finlay Pickering in 21:46. Mark Walker has entered the series again after a year’s break and was best of the rest in 22:29 beating JP by just over a minute with Ben Williams taking 6th spot. 1st lady was Pauline Mitchell in an excellent 26:28 Pos Name Club Time Points 1 John Brearley Squadra RT 00:21:08 50 2 Neil Cleminshaw Hull Thursday RC 00:21:34 @ 00:00:26 47 3 Finlay Pickering Wold Top Actif 00:21:46 @ 00:00:38 45 4 Mark Walker Wold Top Actif 00:22:29 @ 00:01:21 44 5 JP Pretorius Vive Le Velo 00:23:35 @ 00:02:27 43 6 Ben Williams Hull Thursday RC 00:23:46 @ 00:02:38 42 7 Andy Carroll Hull Thursday RC 00:23:49 @ 00:02:41 41 8 Richard Dean Hull Thursday RC 00:24:14 @ 00:03:06 40 9 Max Poole Bikebox 00:24:21 @ 00:03:13 0 10 Adrian Dalby Hull Thursday RC 00:24:48 @ 00:03:40 39 11 Simon Posnett Hull Thursday RC 00:25:15 @ 00:04:07 38 12 Neil Dean Hull Thursday RC 00:25:30 @ 00:04:22 37 13 Douglas Jaram Hull Thursday RC 00:25:35 @ 00:04:27 36 14 Pauline Mitchell Cliff Pratt Cycles 00:26:28 @ 00:05:20 35 15 Dave Jacketts Hull Thursday RC 00:26:36 @ 00:05:28 34 16 Lee Walton Hull Thursday RC 00:28:47 @ 00:07:39 33 17 John Galbraith Hull Thursday RC 00:29:10 @ 00:08:02 32 18 Hermione Pickering Team Jaden 00:29:29 @ 00:08:21 31 19 David Watson Hull Thursday RC 00:35:58 @ 00:14:50 30

VTTA (Yorkshire) V236/1 25 Miles (7-04-18): Neil Cleminshaw

This test placed me 5th on Actual (7th on Standard). I punctured a front tubular 6 minutes before the start, a lightning fast change at the car and my old Zipp 440 saved the day, but the narrower rim made my brake not work, which made for an "interesting" race, for which I shut down and coasted It was my 4th fastest 25 of all time and I produced more power than the 51:11 I clocked last season to take the HullThursdayRC Vets 25 Record. Looking good for the open TT season.

Open 15 mile TT Hull Thursday RC Record Broken: Neil Cleminshaw

Neil Cleminshaw Breaks the Open 15 mile TT Hull Thursday RC record on 22nd April 2018 with a super-fast time of 31:47, an average speed of 28.316mph. The previous Record set on the A63 of 32:21 was set by Jymmy Trevor in 2014 which improved on Joel Wainman's record from when he rode for Hull Thursday Road Club. To slice 34 seconds off this record on a slower course is a very satisfying achievement and bodes well for the 2018 season. In Sunny 20 degree blustery conditions Cleminshaw battled the cross/head wind out to Howden TI exiting the turn with an impressive 26.8mph average "from then I knew it was all to play for but was unsure how much faster the return leg would be, having to get my average up to the 28mph required to ensure I set a new club record". After setting a blistering pace past Eastrington I could see my average approach the magic 28, gusting side/back winds made light work of Slipper Bridge Gilberdyke. Then it was 56x11 time to get it all out to the finish. On the return leg through Newport village, the Strava section later confirmed a 32.5mph average speed!! Neil placed 5th with the win going to TT legend Adam Duggleby as the only rider to go over 30mph average clocking an amazing 29:31 setting a new record for the V724 Newport -Howden 15 mile course. The event was scheduled to run on the A63, but changed due to the ongoing TRO issue with the Highways agency, which can only leave us guessing what the times might have been on that super-fast course!

Moors and Shores Adventure Cross: Doug Jaram

After hearing various stories about this event from different sources I wasn't really sure whether to enter. Up until riding this event I had somewhat fallen out with ‘off-road’ but this new type of event called Adventure Cross is becoming increasingly popular so I decided to give it a go. I had made some loose arrangements with other friends to ride with them but it wasn't clear whether they would be riding on MTB or cross bikes. Again there were lots of conflicting reports about which one was best but given all the pre-event information from the organisers about sections of the route having to be cut out due to waterlogged sections I decided to play it safe on MTB. Whilst I might not be as quick I was guaranteed to get through it. As it happened, in the days leading up to the event I found out that fellow member Dave Millson was doing the event and also planned to ride it on an MTB. I picked up Dave at around 7 am for our 90 minute journey to the headquarters in the centre of Dalby Forest. Upon our arrival it was clear that the event would be a busy one because the car park was already full and we were having to park on the forest access roads. No problem just a short walk to signing on and collect our numbers etc.

At the start line riders were being released in blocks of 20 or so in the usual sportive format. It had quite a buzz about it with a big marquee, lots of flags, promotional material and music blasting out to add to the atmosphere on the start line.

We were doing the Grand Massif version of the event which was the higher mileage of around 52 miles. You might think it is not very far, or much of a challenge, but the event organisers quoted it being 78% off-road which is where the challenge comes in. Most of the going was not technical to be honest with fire tracks, bridleways and backroads but conspicuous in their absence were vehicles! I think we only saw about three cars all day. The first feed station was around the back of the Fylingdales radar station and was aimed at just topping up your water bottles or Camelback. The guy operating the feed station was panicking slightly because people were filling up big Camelback's and emptying out his supplies but they seem to hold out whilst we were there. There were two other feed stations, one being close to the top of the Reisty Bank and the other in Hackness Village Hall. These two feed stations both had food in plentiful supply.

Chatting to other riders along the route there was a good atmosphere which was of course helped by the great weather that we had on the day. There did not seem to be any typical riders in the event, with all types people on different sorts of bikes. I think on the day and given the route changes the organisers had made, we could have very easily done it on cross bikes although we would be slightly more battered at the end. There were three or four notable climbs with the last and worst one being from Wench Green back up into the forest where the event headed back towards HQ. There were quite a few people getting off and walking that one but Dave and I managed to drag ourselves up it. The last bit of the route used a muddy bridleway and some of the Dalby Red route which I think would have been slightly more challenging on a cross bike but nonetheless perfectly doable.

Our official time was 4:52:17 which seemed respectable and I don't think we brought the club into disrepute wearing club kit with that time! The event was really good and I am already looking at doing a similar one in the Peak District if anyone fancies it on 20th of May.

The Peak District Pioneer Adventure Cross (mentioned at the end of Doug’s write up) is a classic British ride exploring the bridleways and cycle trails of the undulating White Peak area of Derbyshire.
