6. Website The website is now back up and running after work done to repair damage caused by a malicious hack is nearing completion. This version should keep us going whilst the development of the new look site is being done behind the scenes. More work is needed however to remove gobbledygook code injected into posts - this is still appearing on hundreds of post pages and will take weeks to remove. Security has been beefed up and this should prevent further breaches occurring. The site is however a little out-of-date in places and I am hereby requesting updated content from committee members as follows. If you could send the requested information to [email protected] I would be very grateful:

Updated clothing stock list - Excel spreadsheet please Up-to-date details of Committee members/roles Up-to-date details of members' incentive scheme - if different from site Club runs details - if different from what's currently on the site in 'Rides' Details of club course records - I want to change the page so it lists previous

record times as well as the current fastest, which I do not have. Any results from this year's EYRRL events

Thanks - this should keep me busy for a week or so... Please find attached the latest Analytics report of web stats for the site (for last month) as a 'benchmark' to which we can compare traffic coming back to the site over the next month.

BIG G 10 - 22nd July: Amanda Dean

The T Shirt It was decided that to commemorate the 10th BIG

G we would have this reflected in the T Shirt.

Although (quote Paul) “you can’t go wrong with

blue”, we wanted a different colour. A colour chart

went to the Committee meeting and Purple, Azure

Blue and Pink was picked out. Graeme Lawton

produced a fabulous new design and mocked-up

each colour. I got T Shirt samples from the

company and pinned the mock up on the front and

at a time trial 13 people voted: 8 pink, 3 blue and 2

azure (notably neither woman chose pink). So,

possibly a brave move, 300 Pink T Shirts were

ordered with the 300 blue and red remaining from

previous years for riders who baulked at Pink ….

And it worked wonderfully. The left over T Shirts

had a mix of colours remaining in each size.

The Organisation All went smoothly with Paul and Neil covering all the bases. However, riders slowly booked in and at the deadline for ordering T Shirts we only had 275 riders including the Mini G - a number which would make a large loss for the event. We knew there would be more but expected a low turnout. The numbers began to build slowly then in the last two weeks almost 200 more riders appeared resulting in 520 riders booked in. Volunteers came forth for the route marking and the Deanies drove the full route the day before filling in missed arrows. Whilst we completed the route, the Kilvingtons filled hundreds of the now famous BIG G cheese & onion tortillas. The only thing not playing fair was the weather which was forecast to rain much of the day.

The Day The rain came and was heavy but by 8:30am it faded and gave way to showers, and by the afternoon the sun shone on the beautiful grounds of Bishop Burton. Neil Dean and Doug Jaram rushed out at 7am to put the signage in place – a race against the first riders. Their day finished around 5pm back at base having completed broom wagon duties and sign collecting. Meanwhile, it was a hive of activity at base with registration from 7:30am and riders being directed. The Thixendale feed station was packed up and off. Food delivered to Huggate. The mini G feed station in place and the mini G set off with leading and following bikes. A small lull then riders began returning, some splattered in mud (but showers available). The mini G families came in with excited children very proud of their achievement. All picked up a T Shirt and relaxed over a hot meal.

There were a few casualties who occupied the first aiders but they were mostly minor injuries. Punctures featured due to the rain washing grit onto the roads but, overall it was a massive success. Thank you to all the volunteers and Cliff Pratts (mechanical cover) who made the day so successful.

Some of the Feedback

“Congratulations on a cracking event. This was my first time along with friends that came across from Skegness. They were impressed with the route and facilities provided and have already said to me about doing it next year! Please have a rethink as we’d love to continue to enter this event. The site at Bishop Burton College is ideal and all the organisers, volunteers etc were a credit to the event.” “I think we were one of the few groups of riders who didn’t suffer any punctures. Couldn’t believe the amount that did. Obviously didn’t take heed of the advice on your ‘Final Instructions’ sheet!” “Once again, Thank You, and please, please, please keep the event going.” “Just a quick email to say thank you for organising another excellent Big G. I always think that the route marking is the best of any event I take part in. Sad to think that this was the last. I will have to find another challenge to batter my legs with in future!” “Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed this year's Big G. As always, the organisation was spot on, the food stops were great and everybody I spoke to from your club was friendly and helpful. And of course it's a cracking route through beautiful countryside.” “Just to say a massive well done to you and all involved with today's sportive Once the rain had gone what fantastic scenery Feed station was spot on and so was the food after the ride Once again thank you all.” “Great event on Saturday – thank you very much to you and the team. Even the dodgy weather first thing didn’t take anything away from the event. It was the first time I had done the ride and very sorry to hear that it will be the last – but well done!”

A ride with the Gerries: John Ulyatt

GILLY GILLY OSSENFEFFER KATZENELLEN BOGEN BY THE SEA. ---------- The Gerries met today at 10am at Greenwood Ave corner on a COOLIO morning which turned warmer as the day progressed. 25 of us split into the usual Peleton and Autobus. Off we ROCK AND ROLLED via (JOHNNY) PRESTON/PAULL (ANKA) and onto Stoney Creek (looking out for arrows and banjos!!!!). As Steve (Aka Van Gogh) had a flatty before we'd even started, we were running 20 mins late so we cut a loop out at Sunk ISLAND (OF DREAMS) and headed to Patrington/Welwick/(BUDDY) HOLLYM to the (ROY) CASTLE cafe at GILLY GILLY OSSENFEFFER KATZENELLEN BOGEN BY THE SEA - Aka Withernsea! By this time I had 44 miles on the clock and was HANK MARVIN. This was soon sorted with Beans on TOAST with an EGGY POP on top and a cup of STAGGER LEE for £2.95!!! YES £2.95!!! INCREDIBLE (STRING BAND) value. A quick BRENDA LEE in the local LOU (RAWLS) and we were on our way back. We flew past the LIGHTHOUSE (FAMILY) to (DIANA) ROOS/Burton Pidsea/Humbleton/Sproatley/ and past Burton Constable Hall (Scene of the Radio 1 roadshow a couple of weeks ago) to pick up the old railway track at Coniston to Sutton and Noddle Hill Way to eventually arrive at The Ship in Dunswell at 3.59pm for a couple of TOP GEARS. A great 74 miler in usual good company. By the way PK looked very CHIC on his new bike.

The Young Pickering’s Race Season 2017 - to date: Simon Pickering

The idea behind 2017 was less is more. Less racing and less travelling makes for a happier wallet and more conventional father/child relationship (as opposed to the inevitable skewing of a relationship that is formed behind a driver’s wheel). And, with that in mind, Track racing was the first casualty. Knowing that there was no local track, it made sense to make a cut in this discipline. And it worked out convenient as it was at logger heads with Mountain Biking given that national level races in these two cycling disciplines are often planned for the same weekend (Track and MTB are not considered compatible according to British Cycling’s development pathway). That and the fact that it was difficult to get Hermione the required track accreditation meant that the occasional weekend was salvaged for me. So, the season was to be one of just Road Racing and MTB for both Fin and Hermione. I say just as, at the time of writing, the forthcoming Cyclocross Season is looming large like a poltergeist about to unleash its terrors. Anyhow, in no particular order of favouritism, the season so far:

Finlay Fin opened his MTB season with a 3rd at the First National held in Pembrey, South Wales, on 2nd April. In all probability he could have placed higher had he had the luxury of more practice time the day before. He played it safe by taking the easier but slower ‘B’ lines throughout the race, having not practiced the faster ‘A’ lines. A week later Finlay’s road season kicked off in the same vein as his Cyclocross season had ended, with a win in some style at the Good Friday race in York. He lapped the field in a solo break and then gapped them again to take another half lap. The Bank Holiday weekend in early May meant a journey across the Irish Sea to the Isle of Man for its Youth Tour. This is one of only two “Grand Tours” Fin at the National RR final with Joe on the Youth calendar. Kiely and Joshua Charlton With Fin placing only a couple of seconds behind the winner of the Time Trial, things were looking promising for him for the remaining two stages. Indeed, I thought that they were looking very good for Fin as he came towards me on the second criterium stage considerably ahead of the field with a solo attack. As he passed me he pointed to his back wheel and shouted that he had a puncture. At that point I realised that, with three laps remaining, it was all over for the little lad. He lost three minutes to the group after the

Page 9: Scene - htrc.co.ukhtrc.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/HTRC-Scene-July-2017.pdf · Club Scene July 2017 Hull Thursday rc Email articles for Scene to scene@htrc.co.uk For club information

neutral service car finally got to him and kindly donated a wheel shod with a cassette that left him woefully under-geared. To his credit, he got on with completing the stage and clawed back a minute with a heroic solo time trial. Tour over though.

Stage three was hilly and Finlay had plans. He hadn’t divulged the same to me as I tried to console him with thoughts of trying to salvage the tour with a stage win. He attacked from the gun and won with some 3 minutes to spare over Welwyn Wheeler’s Joe Kiely who had attempted a chase with Max Poole. The field was strung out in dribs and drabs and Fin lapped everyone up to about 8th place. It was enough to give Finlay the overall and the points jersey to boot. Reminder to self, it’s not over until it’s over!

Thereafter, the North West Youth Tour was pretty much a repeat of the Isle of Man, albeit without the added spice of a puncture. The top positions were much the same but for Max going one better in second place.

Pinky and Perky’s results (Max and Fin) meant that at the half way point in the British Cycling National Road Race Series, Hull Thursday had been on the top step twice and been associated with the top step on the other occasion.

A couple of further Nationals followed, Hillingdon and Sterling, and the boys both placed well albeit, not on the top step. The result being that Fin is currently placed third within the National Series lead by Max.

Hillingdon National - photo courtesy of British Cycling

Joe Kiely, who is Fin’s nemesis (and now close friend through all the adversity they inflict on each other on an almost weekly basis) took the National Title at Milton Keynes a couple of weeks ago. He out sprinted Fin to the flag by few tenths of a second, who in turn beat Hetton Hawk’s Joshua Charlton (to my mind the best ‘new’ rider of the 2017 season by far).

Fin would have liked to have won, obviously, but he was happy for Joe “who deserved [to win]” given all their battles over the last year. The top three finished well ahead of the bunch. Just off the podium was Max, who had attempted to bridge the gap from the peloton and found himself alone in no-mans-land for the final quarter of the race.

Overall, however, Fin’s MTB Season didn’t fare so well. It was marked by either mechanical issues or falls. But for three wins at the Midlands Regional MTB events he never saw the National podium again after Pembrey. Nevertheless he still makes it into the top 10 of the MTB National Rankings at the moment.

Hermione

It was Hermione’s first full season of both road and MTB racing. And it was interesting and heartening to chart her development. It is a lesson for many a Juvenile starting racing.

The season started with her being considerably off the back (we are talking 20 minutes behind the rider in front of her) at Pembrey’s MTB National. Though dead last she came in with a smile.

Pembrey - 1st MTB National with trepidation upon the face

Hermione did a couple of regional White Rose road races thereafter. She was gapped and finished second to last. She was still smiling though.

At the Isle of Man her nerves gave way to smiles again as she finish fourth from last in the initial time trial. Indeed, she didn’t finish last in the criterium the following day! She was about sixth or so from last.

Isle of Man The Isle of Man’s third and hilly stage proved to be somewhat of a watershed for Hermione. Knowing she was of a slight build and that her power to weight ratio was going to be good I tried to instil her with confidence. But Hermione didn’t need my words as the field of competitors splintered upon the rural roads above Port Sodderick. Hermione finished with a third of the field behind her. She came in at the end of the stage elated. “When’s the next race?” she eagerly enquired.

Following this her riding really changed. She was going faster and trying harder. Where before there was not a hint of colour flushing her cheeks post-race, I could now discern more than a gentle glow.

Page 11: Scene - htrc.co.ukhtrc.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/HTRC-Scene-July-2017.pdf · Club Scene July 2017 Hull Thursday rc Email articles for Scene to scene@htrc.co.uk For club information

Then more regional races. Firstly, finishing within the bunch, not gapped, and a first that season for her. Thereafter, a solo attack off the front of the lead group for half a lap. Pegged back by the peloton I’ll grant you, but progress nevertheless. Each and every race saw a small but discernible improvement.

Then the North West Youth Tour, where she lapped riders who had previously lapped her only a couple of months before at the first Hogg Hill national race. She finished half way down the national field and her smile was even bigger. And her result at this “Grand Tour” also marked the point at which the penny dropped: Hermione realised that races were not for them, the seasoned youth racer, but they were for her as well. She understood that she was as entitled and capable of being there as anyone else.

Closer to home within the club TT series confidence was also growing. Each race seeing improvements. Each race closer and closer to Amanda Dean. Until finally it happened. And then it happened again at a White Rose Road Race in York. A win! I gave her the biggest hug.

Hermione at Cannock Chase

Then in almost the twinkling of an eye, the season finale and the biggest of all the MTB races during the season. Whilst Finlay watched on whilst nursing his wounds from a practice day crash, Hermione finished 12th overall at the British Cycling National Mountain Bike Final held at Cannock Chase in Staffordshire on 23rd July 2017. In my opinion it was her best performance all year and a reflection of her growth in confidence. It sealed a huge improvement over the course of the season and when adding that she is a first year under 14, with the majority of her competitors a year older than her, her 2018 looks to have bright prospects. The curtain has now fallen for MTB this season and there is just one National Road Race left at Scarborough on 13th August.

Hull Thursday at the National Team Time Trial Championship: Jim Trevor

Each year the RTTC / CTT allow the best TT riders in the country to battle it out to become the National Champion in several events over 10, 25, 50 and 100 miles as well as over the 12 hours duration. Additionally, there is a hill climb, a closed circuit TT and a Team Time Trial. Events are organised by RTTC district councils or individual clubs. This year the Yorkshire District Council was awarded the honour of hosting the National Team Time Trial. The event, unusually for the RTTC / CTT, is measured in kilometres, being over a measured 50km (31.1 miles). The event involves 3 riders in each team working together to cover the set distance with the 3rd rider to cross the line being the counting time for the whole team. The 2017 event was on roads between Dishforth and Wetherby. So where did the Hull Thursday team come from? I’d seen the event advertised at the beginning of the season, but not knowing how the Hull Thursday Time Trial racers form would be in June I thought nothing more of it. Neil Cleminshaw (Clem) had a hectic winter work schedule overseas and everyone else seemed a little quiet. I’d had a lazy winter myself having gone through a busy spell at work. By late April and after a couple of training camps Clem was showing the type of form we have not seen from him since he turned vet and was displaying some of the class he had as a senior rider over a decade ago. It was clear he would get in any club TT team in the land with his form. But who else could produce enough power to be able to stay with Clem over the hour required. Could I? It was in late April in the VTTA National ‘15’ TT when Andy Carroll took 10 seconds out of me, over 15 miles on the V728 that I had the answer. Andy had certainly had an upturn in form and I’d be the third rider in the team. I thought about it for a couple of days before I asked Andy and Clem if they fancied representing our historic club racing for national glory in an equally historic National TT event. Both Andy and Clem were tied up on the weekend of the event, but within a week they had shuffled things round in their diaries to free up the Sunday and our attempt on the National title was on! Due to me working in Chester as well as Andy and Neil living in different locations our preparations for the event were theoretical rather than practical. We never had a practice run or even trained together. But we did communicate well over a closed group and met up from time to time during our normal racing activities. As the event came closer and we knew how our individual form was we were able to develop our race plan. Clem being by far the strongest would take up the early work on the front and keep the speed high during the early part of the race. As the effects of this workload took effect on Clem it was planned that I would become more involved with holding the pace, with myself being more of an endurance racer producing lower power outputs over longer periods and Andy would be saving his efforts for the final stretches as Clem and I would be spent of energy. So there was the plan. I all too often over 3 decades of being involved with amateur TT racing had seen race teams in 3ups and 4ups beat up on each other in some dual of internal team or club pride and ride completely inefficiently. Our plan was to not do this, stay tight, compact and understand each other’s strengths for the good of the team.

Page 13: Scene - htrc.co.ukhtrc.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/HTRC-Scene-July-2017.pdf · Club Scene July 2017 Hull Thursday rc Email articles for Scene to scene@htrc.co.uk For club information

So the day arrived. We all travelled to the event individually, due to our spread locations. The HQ was an impressive hall in Great Ouseburn more often used for large wedding receptions and beer festivals. Ilkley CC has been known to use the facility when they held the big regional TT events on the same roads a few years ago. The day was hot, very hot. On the way to the event it was 32 °C and that was 9.30 in the morning! As we were off at 11am we knew we’d be feeling the heat and humid conditions on the course. With sign on, bike preparations and fuelling done we warmed up together as a team. In the heat it was more of a loosen up rather than a warm up as we took care not to lose too much body fluid prior to the start. We sat on the line at 10:56 ready for our 10:58 start, Andy was on the line wearing 59 followed by me displaying the number 60 and Clem at the rear of our team as captain sporting the number 58, all in matching race team livery. Julian Read was my start holder, so I knew I was in good hands. Betty Phillipson was time keeping with Mark as clerk. Betty as she’d done for over 50 years, counted us down and we were off. 30 yards down Braimber Lane before we turned left onto the wide and quiet A168 and headed south. Now the course was on roads that all of us knew and that I had personally time trialled on many times. These roads are used for many Yorkshire events due to the excellent visibility, low traffic count and very wide road width making them the safest TT roads in the district. Unfortunately, these roads are notoriously slow and not a place where riders clock PB rides, due to the undulating nature and downhill runs into turns as well as ‘The Wall’ a climb that has an old red brick wall running in parallel to it. The course for this 50km would take us South down ‘The wall’ through 3 roundabouts to the most southerly turn on the outskirts of Wetherby and the 8 miles point. From there was the northern leg involving straight through routes on 5 roundabouts and the climb of ‘The Wall’ to lead us to the turn at the Dishforth roundabout which would see 24 miles covered. From this point a return of 7 miles would see us finish at 31.1 miles just 100 yards from the start area. So we were off, all in our identical white livery HTRC skinsuits, complete with NoPinz adjustments. As Andy peeled off the pole position that he had taken from the start line I took a turn on the front for a quite a good spell of time as we settled into the race, before the power house Clem steadily took the front position and as agreed upped the pace to that which he was to dictate. I

knew I was in for a tough day as at this point as I felt I could not match Clem’s power or pace on a fair 50/50 basis. It wasn’t long before we were descending ‘The Wall’ and the pace was in excess of 35mph. Clem had bigger gears than me and he was winding a good gear down the decline. I was using my ability to spin up, but luckily the aero effect of sitting on the wheel at such a fast speed was increased so I managed to not burn a match as my 53x12 gear was looking all too small. Andy was quiet on the rear but keeping it compact. Coming off the descent Clem controlled a good pace down to the turn at 8 miles. I was able to give Clem some respite from the work and took several turns on the front, but these were more periods for Clem to recover before bashing out further high paced leads for Andy and myself to follow. It was quite unfortunate for Neil that one of my vary rare periods on the front was as we passed the official RTTC photographer, thus it told an untruth in official pictures, as I was seen at the front doing the work. Sorry Neil! As we circumnavigated the 8 miles turn little changed at the beginning of the return leg with Clem hammering big turns on the front with a few rest periods covered by myself which were always followed by longer and harder turns by in-form Clem. As we headed for drag / climb of ‘The Wall’ at the 12 mile point I knew this would be the real test for our Thursday Team. Would we all make it up there together? I was nervous! Nobody wanted to be the one to call for a reduction in pace. Soon it was apparent that our race plan was working as for the first time just at the lower sections of the climb I took to the front with some pride that I would be able to make a positive input into our team. Conscious that it was a team race I rode at the front up the climb at an even power output regularly checking I could see 4 wheels behind me. I was able to put in a solid effort and was pleased to lead us up to the summit point where again Clem took to the front, as I’d certainly burnt a match on the climb. I was feeling better now as I’d put in an effort that had added to our performance. Our plan was still intact. We passed the half distance split point in a good time of 36.18. From here we descended onto the northern section of the course, a much flatter section split by numerous roundabouts. During the northern leg Clem was still pushing the pace, but I was able to assist him more with decent turns on the front as the pace became more manageable as the distance covered increased and my endurance abilities kicked in. The northern roundabout at Dishforth allowed us to monitor our progress against the teams around us, Yorkshire Road Club and Ilkley CC, both with strong teams with multiple Open TT race winners, such as Doug Hart, winner of 2016 Swift 12hr and Carl Saint who has won many opens over the last decade. I time checked the teams, we were doing fine. Clem’s input in the early stages and our team compactness had paid off. It was just seven miles to the finish now. From this point I knew it was Andy and my own turn to hit the pain button. Clem has burnt a lot of matches for us and we had to repay. So from the Dishforth roundabout I buried myself each of my turns on the front. Clem let me stay on the front for good amounts of time and I was pleased to be contributing. As I’d done in the early stages, Clem was giving me breaks at the front to allow me to recuperate before I put in my next effort. Once I’d lead us up the Boroughbridge

South hill at 30 miles all three of us wound it up to the maximum. Again Clem pressed the turbo button at the front for the final mile and after my effort up the last hill I just held onto Andy’s wheel until we saw the chequered flag and the finishing timekeepers, where all three of us sprinted in a near perfect line. We’d done it. We’d followed our plan. We’d done what many other teams had failed to do and worked as a team. We rode back to the event HQ at a snail’s pace in our post-race ‘warm down’. We were all soaked with perspiration, exhausted, hot and pleased with our ride. As all those of you who know Clem, it won’t surprise you to know that he gathered us for a photo at the HQ for his social media feed and you can now see this photo here. Next port of call, once changed, was the results area. As always with a National Championship this was complete with an announcer, split times and other paraphernalia. We were pleased to see our time of 1:09:58 being posted on the large results board. It now displayed that we had beaten the local rivals of Vive Le Velo sponsored ‘A’ team by a minute and a half and the Vive Le Velo ‘B’ team by over 3 minutes. We’d also taken the scalps of most of the other Yorkshire D.C. Club teams, including Bronte Whlrs, Drighlington BC, Rockingham CC, Otley CC. Many other clubs lost riders such as YRC ‘B’, HD Revolutions, York Cycleworks and even experienced top teams such as SSLL ‘B’ were listed as DNF as they were unable to finish with three riders. Once all of the results were in we found ourselves in 22nd place, but of the 21 teams ahead of us only Rutland, Ilkley and Yorkshire RC were cycling clubs, with the rest being sponsored bespoke race teams. All in all a good day for the three of us and a good day for Hull Thursday Road Club. As the author of this piece, I’d like to close out by passing my thanks to both Andy and Clem for a great days racing I won’t forget. Next year’s Team Time Trial will be hosted by the North East District Council, so should be based around the Newcastle area, so maybe Hull Thursday will compete again keeping up the clubs tradition of racing in the big events into the future.

Belper BC Mark Storer Memorial 25 mile TT: Neil Cleminshaw

Result sheet from the Belper BC Open 25 submitted to claim my new Hull Thursday RC Vets 25 Record with a respectable time of 51:11 (29.306mph average speed). I placed 20th in a great field (84 riders) A whopping 2 min 15 seconds off my lifetime PB from 2007 and a 1:58 improvement on the club Vets 25 Record set last season by Jymmy Trevor. I was only 18secs outside the Outright Hull Thursday RC 25 Record set by Joel Wainman back in 1996! This target was on the cards but the wind got blowing up in the last 5 miles, sucking me back on the final drags on the A50 which prevented it on this occasion, but I reckon it would be possible if everything clicked into place. Obviously, I'm really chuffed with jumping from a 53:26 PB to a short 51, which is a remarkable improvement for me. Also we were only 1min 10secs outside the HTRC Team 25 Record:

51:11 Neil Cleminshaw

55:36 JP Pretorius

59:08 Rich Walker 2:45:55 Team (2:44:45 existing record) with Club Time Trialling on the up and performances improving, this record is within our grasp, well done JP and Rich, great rides.

The Three Rivers - Lake District: Geoff Rawson

An early start this morning. Angie and I head for a classic ride in the Lake District. Leaving Beverley by 7:30 am in glorious early morning sunshine. Mountain bikes packed, shin pads, helmets, backpacks & food for the day all checked off. We headed over the highest point at Saddleworth Moor on the motorway and dropped downhill in to a freezing wet and rainy Lancashire. “ohh no” I’ve only brought my lightweight waterproof and no thick gloves, it’s supposed to be summer !!!” and other expletives were being passed about as we drove through a torrent of rain and watched the outside temperature indicated by the van drop from a Yorkshire 18C to a Lancashire 11C . “Well, we’re committed let’s keep going.” I said. We arrived at Staveley after passing through Kendal as I had missed the turn off on the M6 in the rain and motorway spray. So playing for time we visited Wheelbase Cycles in Staveley and admired the £8500 plus mountain bikes before checking out the latest road bikes upstairs. You could spend a small fortune here so, with strong resolve, we left the shop and drifted over the road to one of the best cafés in the Lakes, very popular with roadies and MTB’ers alike, Wilf’s Café. A refreshing coffee and bacon bun gave the clouds more time to clear and so we returned to our bikes, kitted out ourselves and set off on our bikes. A short pedal along the road brings us to the first of many uphill sections. This first being on a single track tarmac climb. The cooler temperatures we had felt on leaving Staveley Yard, were gone and so we made a quick stop to remove arm warmers and gillets and, after storing them in our back packs, we then completed the ascent in sunshine and sweat. So we turned onto the first bridleway of the day which, given the amount of rain earlier, was quite dry with few puddles to negotiate. Riding the tracks and passing through several gates we finally reached Dubbs Reservoir road and made a steady climb up and out into the Lake District hills. Keeping an eye out for red squirrels and adders, both we have prevously seen on this section, but not today, we rode along a technical track towards Garburn Pass. Some bits of this climb we “cleaned“ (ridden without putting a foot down) and others required a small dab or even a short push and as ever the sun is shining on our sweaty backs for the climb . Reaching the top and before the descent, our reward for all that pedalling upwards we stop for a Jelly Baby or two and to enjoy the superb views over to Helvellyn and High Street both, we smugly say to each other, “Ha! We’ve cycled up that!!”

Looking forward we set off down Garburn Pass, rocks and loose stones making the descent very tricky today. The trail has been “improved” due to years of erosion which, if anything, has detracted from its ridability as all the rocks brought in are oversize and very loose. Did we really used to ride down this on mountain bikes with 2 inch of travel and 1.8 inch wide tyres? Nowadays 5 inch plus of travel and tubeless tyres 2.4 inches wide with super low tyre pressures gives immense amount of grip. The trail improves as we reach the lower faster bits and we slide, bounce and skip back onto the tarmac at Kentmere for a short road climb to Magg Howe. And what a climb as your front wheel tries to lift itself up! Then turning ever upwards we head out towards Sadgill and Nanbeild crossing paths with two MTBers going the other way, our first people we have seen for over an hour. A very steep technical drop starts off very fast and wide open allowing us to get air and fly along. As we reached the double switchback hairpins where the trail suddenly drops at a gradient of 25% and slamming on those powerful disc brakes to bring our speed down to a slow crawl and with our bums laid right back over the rear tyre to stop us going over the handle bars, we clean another section down to a little stream letting go of the brakes. The momentum takes us up the other side, now pedalling in bottom gear we climb successfully up through the trees.

Today we agree to push up over the side of Sadgill instead of the alternate route through Longsleddale either is a tough push/climb. But we know that today the single track across the top will be a great challenge as it will be boggy and picking a dry line is a challenge we both enjoy. I shoot ahead as Angie takes the wrong line and out of site sink up to my ankle in cold wet boggy water, but play it cool as she catches up and don’t say a word hoping my wet black foot won’t stand out.

Soon we reach the Green Quarter and are flying down this narrow single track bit we enjoy so much as it turns from boggy muddy to fast steep rocky trail with some fast and tricky bits.

Turning across the ridge we once again hit a very steep bum hanging over the back tyre descent that goes on for over ten minutes. We both have “dropper seat post” which enables this move to be done a lot more safely than in the old days of a fixed post.

Excited by the thrill, at the bottom just stopping before hitting a gate, we re-join the road and double back up the tarmac road to Kent Mere Hall passing by Magg Home again.

Passing a barn we hear the farmer playing a thumping beat on his radio only to realise he is shearing sheep, and this must be the not so sheep calming music he is pumping out boom boom boom!!

The ascent out of Kentmere is a beauty - long steep track but, with a bit of skill and effort, fully rideable.

Passing over the second river, which today is a trickle even after the rain, we turn and go steeply downwards, faster and faster.

Stopping to take in more special views of the Lakes we can hear people talking and laughing ahead. The sun is out and the day has rewarded us for making the effort to get out and ride.

Angie and I come around the sharp corner before the final river crossing down a very steep drop and climb out on the other side.

We can see the water is very deep and ohhh no, there is a large family group with beer and wine sitting on the steep bank of the river crossing! Our minds say “don’t fall in, don’t fall off, don’t get wet“, and most important, “don’t make a fool of yourself”.

Bravely allowing Angie to cross over first by some sneakily applied braking, she shoots down and through the water which is knee high and freezing cold. The large group all cheer loudly as she cleans it and make it look effortless as she crawls slowly up the other side no dabs required.

Now it’s my turn and the group egg me on as I enter the water at speed. Suddenly I hit a hidden rock and start to slide sideways but my speed/skill and suspension take me across in one dry piece but that water was freezing. Another loud cheer and I make it too.

Our final fast single track approaches and we both know the dangers of taking your eye off the ball here as the knowledge you’re nearly there makes you inattentive. Even now, some six years later, we both know the exact spot where “Rusty” our MTB friend wiped out on the very last few metres on this rocky section and we had to carry him off it he was so badly winded. However, today, we laughed and whooped – we’d made it!

A final half a mile on tarmac and we are back at the van, happy and both with wet feet from the final river but what a day.

Stats: 22 miles, 3hours ride time 3,500 feet of ascent/descent.

Pit Stop: Clayton’s Corner Café. Andy Cawley

Outside seating area – Very cycling friendly café. Located in the village of Howsham on the main street B1434. (OS Map 112 GR 04/04) It’s about 16 miles from the bridge so makes an ideal destination for a short ride (less than 40 mile round trip) or can be included in a longer ride. One more reason to explore the quiet roads ‘over the other side’.

Jim’s Training Library Thank you to Jim Sampson who has donated his training books to the club.

Available to Hull Thursday members to borrow without charge. Library goes to all Committee Meetings.
