Food services rebrands two on-campus dining locationsSCC’s campus dining facilities will be

renamed and will debut new menus starting this February. The Plaza Bistro, located in the Student Center, will be renamed Scooter’s Place. The Café, located in the Café/Bookstore, will be renamed Cougar Café.

There will also be several new menu items to promote. Scooter’s Place will have a build-your-own burger bar and Cougar Café will feature a waffle bar.

The grand opening for Scooter’s Place will be from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4. The grand opening for Cougar Café will be from 3-6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5.

The opening events will include music, an appearance from SCC mascot Scooter McCougar, raffles and more. Students who enter the raffles could win lunch gift certificates, refillable mugs and tumblers. Faculty and staff who enter the raffles could win departmental box lunches or a departmental pie party.

“We are very excited to announce these changes for SCC’s food services,” said Pat Haynes, SCC director of bookstore and food services. “We have researched what students want, and we believe that these changes will meet their expectations.”

The spring semester has been underway for more than a week which means enrollment figures will continue to fluctuate for several more days. Institutional Research reports the college is down 4.7 percent in headcount and 5.4 percent down in credit hours but is slightly above budget projections.

Two snow days and frigid temperatures hampered the final days of registration. To assist students, Enrollment Services opened their doors for advising, registration, financial aid and cashier services on Saturday, Jan. 11.

“Traffic was steady and I think students really appreciated the college going the extra mile,” said Kathy Brockgreitens-Gober, dean of enrollment services. “We haven’t opened on a Saturday for more than 15 years, but it went so well it’s a service we may have to consider for future enrollment periods.”

Black History Month at SCC

Starting this month, SCC is offering nationally recognized Certified Production Technician Certificate for entry-level positions in manufacturing.

The certificate includes skills training in safety, quality and measurement principles, manufacturing processes, and maintenance awareness. Flexible lab and classroom opportunities allow local participants to earn industry-recognized credentials that validate their skills in current manufacturing processes.

This opportunity is available to both entry-level and current employees who want to improve their skill level.

Grant funding is available to qualified

candidates. This program is sponsored through the MoManufacturingWINS grant and serves Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) individuals, the unemployed, the underemployed, the low-skilled and qualified individuals who want to train for careers in manufacturing.

Program support specialists are available to help students succeed with the program application, training and career goals. Students will also learn lessons in problem solving, decision-making, teamwork, training and work practices.

The film 42 will be shown in the auditorium of the Social Sciences Building. The film is about Jackie Robinson, a Negro Leagues player in 1946, who never took racism lying down. Being the first modern African-American Major League player proved to be a major challenge for Robinson and his family, as they endured unrelenting racist hostility on and off the field, from players and fans alike. Robinson finds allies and hope where he least expects it.

Arrive Dance Company will perform in the auditorium of the Social Sciences Building. Arrive Dance Company is a St. Louis-based company that has a unique blend of jazz, modern, contemporary and hip hop styles and that challenges their dancers to be strong in more than one area, as well as providing choreographic opportunities within the company.

MTV at SCC? Well, kind of. MTV Cable Network supports MTVu, MTV’s award-winning college TV channel.

This spring, MTVu will begin broadcasting on 40” flat-screen TVs in the two dining service areas, Scooter’s Place and Cougar Café, as well as in the Fitness Center. Programming includes music videos from emerging artists that can’t be seen anywhere else, news, student life features and initiatives that give college students the tools to advance positive social change.

The channel is broadcast to more than 750 college campuses in 700 college communities nationwide and reaches nearly 9 million U.S. college students – making it the largest, most comprehensive television network just for college students.

The Child Development Center has been awarded a $19,990 Child Care Development Fund Grant through the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to fund a new climber for the playground and to be used toward staff professional development. Through fundraisers and parent donations, the CDC now has the funds to order the Nursery Gym for the new infant room.

MTVu’s agreement with the college includes free installation and TV monitors to enable the broadcast as well as additional funds to purchase flat-screen monitors that can display information about SCC events on campus.

MTVu is broadcast solely on college campuses and cannot be found on network television.

Ameren Missouri has awarded another $2,500 grant to the Pre-Engineering Department to purchase computers towards completion of their mobile computer lab.

The Foundation is teaming up with Great Southern Bank and the Greater St. Charles County Chamber of Commerce to host a five-session speaker series. Dates and topics will be announced soon. The contact with Great Southern Bank was made at a Foundation Explore event and was inspired to sponsor this project with a $3,000 donation.
