CAREER HISTORY

April 2011 to July 2016 – Joseph Rhodes , Wakefield - Electrical and Control Design Engineer

Employed as a (project based) electrical and control system design engineer, working on large projects supplying mechanical and hydraulic presses and mechanical handling equipment to various customers around the world. Duties include electrical distribution and control panel design, specification and procurement of control equipment, development of Siemens Step 7 PLC and WinCC Flexible HMI software, on site commissioning and preparation of manuals. During this period I have also gained some experience working with Yaskawa robots.

The projects worked on include the following

A hot forging plant installed in Pakistan and which consisted of 3 off 800T hydraulic presses powered by 16 off 350KW pumps controlled by soft starters. The system was controlled by a Siemens 319F safety PLC and ET200s remote I/O stations running on “Profinet” and also consisted of an ASi networked safety system and HMI PC stations running WINCC flex.

Installation of 2 off Hydraulic presses and mechanical handling equipment including robots and conveyors installed in Brazil. The plant was controlled by 4 off Siemens 317F safety PLCs and ET200s remote I/O stations operating on a “profinet” network as well as PC based HMI units operating WINCC Flex software.

A complete production line producing blanks from aluminium coils installed in India. This consisted of a coil unwinding plant, a mechanical “blanking” press operating at 80 strokes per minute complete with a servo driven tool positioning system, a stacking system using Siemens servo drives and a pallet handling and stretch wrap line. Controlled by Siemens 300 series PLCs networked on “Profinet”

June 2002 to April 2011 – EC& I Project Engineer

Working as a freelance electrical, control & instrumentation engineer working on various contracts via own limited company.

August 2009 to April 2011 TSC Offshore – E C & I Project/Commissioning EngineerEmployed on a project to construct a Pipe handling crane and conveyor system for a North Sea oil platform. Responsibilities include reviewing design drawings, specifications and documentation along with procurement of PLC based control system and instrumentation and site management of installation involving Atex certified equipment (EExd, EExe, and EExi). Also largely involved in electrical commissioning of the system involving Siemens PLCs, profibus remote I/O, inverter drives, hydraulic movement, encoders, linear transducers, load cells, and various digital instruments.

Oct 2008 to August 2009 Mars Petcare – Electrical Project EngineerEmployed on a project to install a new production line, upgrade of the factory LV distribution network and installation of a factory wide Ethernet system. Responsibilities include reviewing suppliers’ drawings, specifications and documentation, management of installation contractors, review of risk assessments, method statements and control of PTW system, document control and drawing management. Also involved with the co-ordination of installation and commissioning activities.

Other duties include “hands on” commissioning of electrical distribution systems, control panel design, specification and procurement of instrumentation and “ASi” based control system involving Rockwell PLCs and equipment and assisting with commissioning of the fibre optic Ethernet system.

Oct 2007 to Oct 2008 Merlin Systems – Software Commissioning EngineerOn site commissioning of Mitsubishi PLC systems (GX IEC developer), Scada and HMI equipment (E Designer), along with profibus networks controlling ABB drives, Rotork actuated valves and various instrumentation and quality monitoring equipment on a water treatment works for Yorkshire Water (YW). Other duties include preparation of FDS and SAT documents and development of PLC code in accordance with YW standard programming practices. Also involved in the commissioning of Ethernet networks and leased line communications, along with telemetry systems.

June 2006 to Oct 2007 - Bovis Lend Lease & Briggs Automation - Electrical Commissioning Engineer Employed on a construction project for a (£70m) confectionary manufacturing unit. Duties included planning and supervision of process control system commissioning activities, preparation of FAT and SAT documentation and attendance of FAT visits to suppliers of process and packaging equipment. Other duties involved management of permit to work system, risk assessments and method statements and supervision of other commissioning personnel and sub contract companies

June 2002 to June 2006 - Unilever – Leeds - Electrical Project EngineerDuties included control of project planning and costs, preparation of budget estimates, development of URS and FDS documents, preparation of electrical scope of works, control panel design, specification and procurement of process instrumentation and electrical design for hazardous areas in accordance with Atex regulations. Responsibilities also included on-site management of PLC software and electrical installation contractors in accordance with CDM regulations, and testing and commissioning of process plant control systems.

Other duties included attendance of design review meetings and PHA and HAZOP studies, and preparation of technical files in accordance with CE regulations.

Nov 1986 to June 2002 - Roda Design Services – Electrical Manager

Employed by Roda Design Services, an engineering design company based in the Leeds area, mainly working for, but not restricted to, the food manufacturing industry. The company was involved in a variety of projects such as machine automation, services, plant installation and drawing management. My duties included, management of the company’s electrical engineering employees, project management, control system design, PLC programming and commissioning. Also I have been contracted out on a number of occasions to perform specific roles for various clients including management of a £800k E&I installation at Peterhead Power Station.
