OK, so where did summer go? Last time we wrote our editor’s note, it was baking hot and we had become very good friends with the landlord of the pub with THE best drinking garden. Now, we’re beginning to consider getting the Uggs out of their box and dare we say it, turn on the central heating. Brrrrr.

Anyway, the good news is that it’s Autumn and therefore it is wedding fayre season so the East Midlands is simply brimming with lots of exciting wedding fayres and events, some of which are featured within the pages of this edition. Oh and have you realised that this copy is slightly bulkier and a miniscule heavier!? Well, that’s because (with it being wedding fayre season and all) we’ve gone for a bit of a bumper edition to squeeze as much in as possible!

And, of course, we are very excited to be featuring the recent wedding of our editor, Lydia, when she became Mrs Burrows. Take a peek on page 42.

So, whether you’re reading this as a hard copy or sat at your computer on our website reading our snazzy new e-zine, we hope you enjoy and we really hope to see you soon at one of the Save the Date wedding events (turn to page 35 for more details). Don’t forget, you can keep up to date with all the wedding gossip on our daily updated blog and share your ideas and comments with fellow brides, simply visit www.savethedatemagazine.co.uk.

See you in November (when the central heating will most definitely be on!)

Passionate, driven and a flower fanatic are the best words to describe Kerry, owner of the Blossom Tree. With a real love for providing beautiful flowers to her clients, Kerry looks after each and every bride to be with acute attention to detail and a truly personal service. Kerry, talking about her work ethic says “I’m not a florist that produces the same designs for every wedding week after week. Our clients are not merely a booking on a certain day. Instead we provide a truly bespoke service and really work with our brides throughout the design and planning of their wedding to make sure the flowers are exactly what they have dreamt of, and of course within their budget.”

With a background in fashion, Kerry has her finger on the pulse when it comes to trends and styles and is always on the look out for new inspiration. And the Blossom Tree certainly keep one step ahead when it comes to the ‘flower of the moment’ and moving trends. With a current emphasis on French boudoir and luxury vintage chic, Kerry knows what works and what doesn’t and helps her brides every step of the way, to achieve the perfect ‘look’.

Having provided flowers for high end stores and brands such as Harrods, the Blossom Tree have also had their work documented in media such as OK! Magazine, Wedding and Cosmo Bride.

Who would have thought that the small but perfectly formed boutique florist, hidden in the depths of the Derbyshire countryside could make such an impact!? Well, take a look at the website, give Kerry a call or pop into the shop and you’ll soon see why.

What your wedding dress designer can do for you

- with Jackie Thompson Couture

Slim your waist

You love having a flat tum but may not have hours to slave away at the gym. Your dress designer can create a corset and skirt, or incorporate a boned bodice into your dress. These structured pieces will keep your waist nipped in and you feeling like a movie star.

Flatter your arms

A style with sleeves could be right for you if you’re not comfortable with the idea of a strapless dress. There are a variety of sleeves including cap, ! length and full length which will show your arms o", leaving you free to clap, wave and dance the night away.

Draw attention to – or away from – your décolletage

Discreet, barely-there or loud and proud – you want to show your feminine side o" in a way that suits your style and wedding day. Your dressmaker will be able to suggest necklines to suit every shape and size, from sweetheart and V-shape to cowl, asymmetrical and even strapless.

Bring your body into proportion

Let’s face it, most of us aren’t a ‘sample size’ and the thought of going into a shop can make us self-conscious. An experienced wedding dress designer will lengthen your legs, elongate your neck and highlight your best assets! Your dress is made to your exact measurements so will fit you perfectly.

Incorporate personal elements

If you’d like to include a family heirloom such as a vintage veil or beautiful brooch then your designer will happily design with this in mind. You can add a favourite colour or even base the style of your dress from an era you love to make your dress as unique as you.

For a bride, hearing gasps of delight as you walk down the aisle is one of the moments you’ll remember forever. Here’s why you should consider having your wedding dress made for you.

Jackie Thompson Couture specialises in wedding dress bodices, corsets and skirts. Their made-to-measure gowns are designed and crafted to fit you perfectly so you feel as amazing as you look on your wedding day.

As beautiful and timeless as hats can be when you’re at a wedding, wonderful handmade fascinators and headbands really do make a statement and can create a fabulous ‘look’. Whether you’re a guest or the bride herself, we at Save the Date really do love this look and having come across the amazingly talented Sheena Holland who is based just down the road in Derby, we were so excited to share her fabulous designs with you all.

So, we managed to get a quick interview with Sheena, the woman behind these sensational head pieces to ask her all about her business and where her talent derives from:

So, Sheena, could you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you came to this particular area of design?I was born in Camden, London and studied fashion under the fashion designer Katharine Hamnett in the late 1980’s at her design studios in north London as a design room assistant working on fabrics for the catwalks when her fashions were a statement both politically and creatively. She then went on to design large floral, wire and concrete sculptures in London, and work for the likes of Elton John’s 54th birthday and Michael Jacksons ‘World’ tour. Films such as ‘The Mummy’ and ‘Sense and Sensibility’, and HRH The Queen Mother’s 100th birthday celebrations.

I started making one o! Vintage feather and leather headbands in 2003 and was

the first designer to create the feather headband on a headband in a pad format. I now create headdresses and jewellery made from vintage materials using re-worked leather, antique, vintage jewellery and feathers combining fashion, shapes and colours from floristry. My designs have sold to many people, including the singers Pink and Lily Allen.

How would you describe your particular style and what materials do you enjoy working in the most?I would say my style is antique inspired rather than vintage inspired. I prefer older material to modern. But I do like a twist of modern in there. So I may create a modern style but solely out of antique pieces. I also like my work to look like you can wear it as a non genre piece. So it doesn’t dictate the age of fashion but more of a classic piece that can be worn as a vintage statement in fifty years time." I’d like to think i’m creating the next vintage.

I work mainly with feathers, vintage if possible ~ 99% of my work is with Antique or Vintage pieces of jewellery, so I remain stuck in that era, which is lovely. So I use Jet, Celluloid, Lucite, Aurora Borealis, Diamante, White Iron Pyrite and pearls amongst other things.

How do you go about creating the designs in your range and developing new ideas for your collection?I have to feel inspired by someone or something, often nature or colours blending with each other." It might be someone in the street that I see, who has put together an ensemble of colours or shapes in a garment that I like together and I get inspired to use another colour with them or work on that theme. The seasons changing help to shift me into thinking about using di!erent colours. And of course animals and their coats or birds and feathers inspire me all the time.

What advice would you give to someone who is looking to choose and wear a flamboyant fascinator for the very first time?I would first say try one on. Not to have a pre conceived idea as to what it looks like on or if you’re too old to wear something like that or even if it would suit you. The most unlikely women and men for that matter have tried on my headwear and then bought it by being so taken aback as to how much it suits them. I would also say try on the opposite colour of the colour spectrum, to your hair. So for instance if you have red hair go for an electric blue or a French blue and see if you’re not shocked by how much it suits you.

How cool would it be to have the same photographer who works with high class magazines, the Manchester United stars and funny man James Corden, on your wedding day? Well, Stuart Wood has earned himself an amazing reputation both in the commercial world as well as weddings and has been discovered by the BBC, Radio Times and Sky. And quite right too – Stuart is a real gem when it comes to original photography. We at Save the Date were so excited to get to know Stuart and his work, not only because he rubs shoulders with the rich and famous, but also because his work is simply stunning. With his high attention to detail, Stuart’s results are jaw dropping and he manages to create a truly dramatic scene with the simplest of shots.Having been a people photographer for TV and magazines for years Stuart is now building a very successful wedding photography business by bringing something di!erent to the genre. Known for his lighting skills and having to work quickly with some of the country’s top celebrities for the likes of the Radio Times

means he is ideally suited for the pressures of weddings. Apart from the famous faces, he also regularly shoots ‘real life’ features for magazines like Grazia where he has to work with people who are not used to being photographed. Having met and worked with Stuart several times, it is apparent that he finds that being able to put his subjects at ease and connect quickly with them is probably the most important skill of all and he is always striving to make sure that his wedding photography is relaxed, engaging and distinctive. Stuart has also joined forces with celebrated photographer, Crash Taylor with, ‘The Art of Wedding Photography with Stuart Wood and Crash Taylor’ - an intensive two-day course for wedding photographers who want to create images that ooze style and visual beauty. The workshop takes place on 10-11 November at Thrumpton Hall, Nottinghamshire. For further information visit www.crashtaylorphotoworkshops.com

In the last edition of Save the Date magazine, the girls over at Honeysuckle and Castle told us about a lovely wedding they were involved with on 9th July at Tutbury Village Hall. With a small venue hire fee, the bride and groom, Holly Nixon and Ricky Willis were able to pull out all the stops with the overall look and feel of the day and Honeysuckle and Castle have given Save the Date access to all the inspirational details from the day itself. Here’s just a few:! Honeysuckle and Castle’s very own crystal trees added to the style of the day and looked magical when glowing ! Hand made by the girls at Honeysuckle & Castle, menus tied in with the pink and butterflies theme! The Butlers Pantry in Mickleover provided the sumptuous food and fabulous evening bu"et! Flowers were all white, Avalanche roses with crystal centres and satin pink ribbon and arranged by Honeysuckle and Castle ! A relaxed string quartet, Derventio Quartet, played during the drinks reception and provided a truly elegant touch. The evening singer, Gina Price, was sensational and sang mainly motown and popular hits ! Honeysuckle and Castle created a Token tree for the guests to write a personalised message on a tag then hang it from the branches. This was placed in the entrance of the hall and the shimmering branches made a beautiful e"ect when night fell! A beautiful shabby chic table plan was designed by Honeysuckle and Castle and placed on an easel, with photographs of Mr and Mrs Willis surrounding it. It made a lovely personalised final touch

All images captured by Oehlers Photography - a lovely, relaxed and professional team to work with, Cathy and her husband, Brian are amazing at capturing photographs which tell a story.

ASK: Save the Date Lydia and Abbi answer your questions

Rachel: I cannot find any nice bridesmaid dresses. Lydia, where were yours from? Please can you help!?

I had such a nightmare trying to find bridesmaid dresses so ended up having them made which is possibly a bit of a pricier option but really worth it. I went to Couture Bridal Designs who are in Nottingham - opposite Bentons Brasserie. Lovely ladies and made my girls’ dresses just perfect for me. Other than that, French Connection have started doing lovely dresses which could be worn as bridesmaid dresses and have you tried the Dessy Collection? They are from America and therefore di!cult to see before you buy but lots of brides tend to have them and they do look gorgeous. Hope that helps.

Linda: My daughter is getting married at a venue which allows external caterers and to tell you the truth, I don’t know where to start! Can you recommend any high-end caterers within Nottinghamshire?

Linda, this is a tough one as there are so many fabulous caterers out there. Firstly, through experience, I can highly recommend Fiona Herbert Catering – amazing food with a real creative flair. Fiona and her team are simply brilliant at what they do. There is also Maverick Catering who I’ve heard are also fantastic and come highly recommended by many prestigious venues in and around Nottinghamshire. Finally, McArtneys, based in Nottinghamshire are a very stylish catering company and popular with weddings. There are lots more which I could mention too so if you’re still struggling, drop me an email and we’ll discuss!

Sarah: When do you book your flowers? Our theme is English Country Garden, with an Easter kick! I have my flowers in my head for my bouquet but just cannot picture the links with invites, etc. Help!

Oh, Sarah, English Country Garden sounds gorgeous! What I suggest is that the sooner you can get yourself to a florist, the better. They will help you visualise your flowers and explain how to turn that idea in your head into a reality! Once you have seen the florist and decided what flowers you are definitely having and you can picture the colours and the way they will be arranged, everything else will slot into place. Promise!

And just because you’ve been to see the florist and discussed your ideas, doesn’t mean you have to make a firm booking there and then. I would suggest that you confirm your booking with your chosen florist around 3 months prior to the big day.

Lauren: I want to have one person on each table with a fancy red coloured wine glass or goblet, and then a red silk napkin! Ideally I want to hire them but am struggling to find a great hire company! Any ideas? What a great idea Lauren! Love it.

Well, I must admit, we find it di!cult at times to come across theming companies, however, we regularly work with Wedding Event Design Studio who are highly professional and o"er a great selection of items to hire. Also, Honeysuckle and Castle is ran by two lovely sisters and they are primarily wedding planners but also o"er a service whereby you can hire items from them including glassware and napkins. Plus, both of these companies are local and therefore you won’t be paying over the odds for collection/delivery. Let me know how you get on!

Weddings are a constantly changing reflection of lifestyles. Each year!brings new fashions in everything from flowers to stationery, and!brides-to-be can easily find themselves adrift in a sea of endless choices.!Add in occasional family disagreements and military-style logistics and!planning a wedding suddenly seems a lot less romantic.

Luckily, the Newark Advertiser Wedding Fair is back to help make the big day go!smoothly. Held at Kelham Hall on Sunday October 3rd from 11am until 4pm, the fair is one!of the largest of its kind in the East Midlands. It features a wealth of!exhibition stands, fashion shows and entertainment. From cake makers and catering!companies to florists, jewellers, make-up artists, travel

agents,!photographers and venues, the range of services has been carefully selected!to be wide and balanced.

Stands will fill The Dome, Carriage Court, Cedar Room, Music Room, Peacock!Room and Drawing Room. Light refreshments are available throughout, and a!licensed bar is available from noon.

There will be plenty of bridal fashions and outfits for bridegrooms, members!of the wedding party and guests of all ages. Pageboys and bridesmaids will!be relieved to find up-to-date, fashionable styles that will not compromise!their street credibility. Wedding attire for traditional and civil!ceremonies will also be showcased on the catwalk.

First impressions count on wedding days and arriving in style is perhaps the earliest chance to make a statement. Outside Kelham Hall, a selection of cars will be displayed and there will be a marquee with stands to give plenty of ideas on marquees and how to decorate receptions.

Planning a wedding is a mixture of fun, frustration and ruthless organisation. From those just starting out to those looking for the finishing touches, it can all be found at Kelham Hall.

Tickets cost £4 and include champagne and canapés and a free goodie bag for the bride (while stocks last). Tickets are available from the Newark Advertiser reception, online at www.newarkadvertiser.co.uk or on the door.

Having trained at the London School of Beauty and received a diploma in makeup in media, fashion, airbrushing, special e!ects, occasion & bridal makeup and hair styling, Sophie is well equipped when it comes to making you look your best on your big day.

With a fabulous variety of experience ranging from working on TV shows such as Family Fortunes 2009 & 2010, National Lottery Guesstimation Quiz Show, Fearne Cottons First Fashion Show, Krypton Factor, Global Radio Press Shoots and LA Girlband Millionaires first British photoshoot, Sophie has been fortunate enough to work with some of Londons top makeup artists.

However, bridal make up is where Sophie's passion truly lies. "My favourite part about bridal make up is making someone feel special on their big day and being involved with everyone including bridesmaids and the mother of the bride. It's so much fun and a real privilege to be a part of", says Sophie.

Creativity is what Sophie prides herself on and she loves experimenting with di!erent styles and looks on the trial to ensure the brides feels just perfect with her overall look.

Based in Nottingham, Sophie is happy to travel to a brides home or venue across the UK and beyond and can quote depending on location. Group discounts are available and Sophie o!ers di!erent packages, depending on the clients requirements.

Bridal makeup needs to have enough colour to compensate for the whiteness of the dress. Remember, there is a big di!erence between everyday clothes and a wedding dress, so there should be a di!erence in the makeup too. Start by making sure the skin looks even and smooth, and then add colour to give cheeks and lips a glow. Finish with eyes that are defined but not overdone. To avoid feeling rushed, allow forty-five minutes to an hour for makeup application on the wedding day.

Natural light is best for makeup application, if possible, set up your makeup station near a window.

Use a moisturiser that will prepare the skin for makeup. Try Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base (£33.50). Avoid sun blocks and sun screens as they can give a “flash o!” to makeup. They reflect too much light under the flash photography, resulting in an overexposed shot.

Emphasise the eyes by brightening any darkness under them with corrector and concealer. Try Bobbi Brown Corrector followed by a Cream Concealer (£16.50)

Set concealer and foundation with a sheer loose powder. Powder applied with a powder pu! assures amazing wearability and reduces unwanted shine – a must-have look for pictures. Try Bobbi Brown Sheer Finish Loose Powder (£22.50)

If the wedding gown has an open neckline warm up the neck and chest with a dusting of bronzing powder. It will ensure that the face and body have a balanced tone. Try Bobbi Brown Bronzing Powder (£23.50)

For a pretty flush that lasts, use two shades of blush. Start with a neutral shade - try Bobbi Brown Blush in Tawny (£16.50), and apply it on the apples of the cheeks blending up into the hairline, then downward to soften. Finish with a pop of brighter blush. Try Bobbi Brown Blush in Pale Pink (£16.50) just on the apples of the cheeks. Balm or shimmer can be layered for a highlighting e!ect.

Neutral, brown and pale lip colours look washed out in photographs, so choose a lip colour that is one or two shades brighter than what you normally wear. For those who normally wear a neutral hue, it should be worn as a base, with a pink or rose colour on top. For those who normally wear dark lip colour, use that as they base and apply a brighter pink on top to give the colour a lift. Pinks, roses and plums are great choices for brides. Try Bobbi Brown Lip Colour in Sandwash Pink (£15.50)

Use a water-resistant liner that can withstand tears. Try Bobbi Brown Long Wear Gel Liner (£15) If you prefer to line with shadow, make it last longer by applying it with a slightly damp eye liner brush. Try Bobbi Brown Eye Liner Brush (£20.50)

Use an eyelash curler before applying the first coat of mascara. And choose a mascara that’s waterproof; it lasts longer and withstands tears. Try Bobbi Brown No Smudge Mascara (£17.50)
