A PROFILE SUCCESS STORY: MICHELLE SAILING
MONTRA: Waking up each day and preparing for the next challenge – maintaining weight or accomplishing my next personal goal of my workout or run.
ROLE MODEL: Misty Wolford, a friend of many years, is the example of overcoming the struggles that distract us from exercising. She always makes sure that there is time in her schedule to exercise. She believes we have to take care of ourselves.
SNACK: Loves Mexican Food and has been able to find ways to enjoy it without all the carbs.
MOVE: Running, in the beginning it was challenging to walk for 40 minutes. Now, I look forward to runs.
SOUND TRACK: Zombie Run App – Tracks the run and provides a story that she becomes a part of and encourages her to keep up her pace and praises her achievements.
AFTER YEARS OF STRUGGLING with my weight with little success, my life began to be more stressfulin 2011. My mother passed away, my employer of 30 years left Evansville which left me in a life changing transition. Plus, a childhood friend died suddenly. All these stresses among others were all causing me to turn to food for comfort. This became the norm. Then in 2015, God blessed me with a special gift from a friend: a free membership to Profile by Sanford.
Very reluctantly I made my initial appointment. I was terrified of failure, I knew I needed help...was this gonna lift me up and out of my misery? Or, was this gonna be another unreachable goal?
I attended the appointment and was welcomed by my coach, Leia – with her beautiful smile. There was no judging, just comforting peace and support to overcome my struggles. I joined Profile on May 16, 2015 – To my surprise, I was able to enjoy Profile Meal Replacements, bars and quickly began to feel satisfied with proper portion sizes. June 2015 – I had lost 22 pounds – I was beginning to feel a difference in my clothes. My confidence and motivation to exercise began to increase. September 2015 – Now 50 pounds lost – I continued to eat to my Profile Plan and was exercising 3-5 times a week. I began challenging myself to use a
variety of weights and cardio machines. January 2016 – It not had been 7 months and I was down 75 pounds. I had succeeded in celebrating all the Holidays without overindulging too much. I also began the C25K App and began running on the treadmill. March 2016 – Just 8 pounds from goal and I feel better than I have in many years. I continue to run using the C25K. I have built endurance and strength and I have signed up for a local 5K in April. July 2016 – 14 months after this journey began, I am down 100 pounds. I have more energy than ever. I exercise 5 days a week. I have ran four 5K races and I am registered for the Marathon Series Races. I could not have done all this without the help of my family and friends. They all have helped me stay motivated and have encouraged me when the hard days roll around. My plan for the future is to keep on moving.

Now in its thirteenth year, the YMCA of Southwestern Indiana will once again host the Evansville Half Marathon, sponsored by German American Bank. The race will take place on October 1st at 7:00 am on the Ohio Riverfront in Downtown Evansville. The route will be "New" again this year with North Main Street under construction. The new route will be available soon. We will still begin and end along the riverfront. We will also explore Historic Evansville, Bayard and Garvin Park, and the beautiful Pigeon Creek Greenway. The new route will be published soon.
Love the idea of participating in the Evansville Half Marathon but not sure you can be ready for

the full 13.1 miles? Now you can be part of a relay team and share the half marathon distance among a team of 2 or 3 people. Relay team members will complete specific legs of the Half Marathon course, and hand off a baton containing a timing chip to their teammate for the next leg at an exchange station. This a great opportunity to be part of the Evansville Half Marathon even if you aren't a distance runner or walker.
The discount for military service personnel is also an option again in 2016. The YMCA is partnering with locally owned company Ameriqual to offer the first 150 military athletes who register online the opportunity to participate for just $25. A special
race bib, race shirt, and special packet prepared by Ameriqual will be waiting for military registrants at their special line at packet pickup.
The YMCA encourages healthy living for all ages. To encourage an early start to a lifetime of physical activity, the Evansville YMCA Half Marathon includes a Kids’ Half Marathon, for school age children under 13. Kids will run or walk 12 leading up to the event and complete their thirteenth mile on the Half Marathon course, finishing at the “official” finish line. All participants will receive a running log, a t-shirt and a kid’s half marathon medal. The school or group with the largest number of participants will be eligible for a special prize.
Club Spotlight TEAM 13Last year the kiddos at Dexter Elementary won the school challenge with nearly 50 of its students training together after school and then showing up as a team for that final mile. They each received an official Evansville Half Marathon race medal and a pizza party during a special assembly at their school.
An aspect of the Evansville YMCA Half Marathon that always elicits very favorable comments from race participants is the very positive and active crowd support and entertainment along the course. Past entertainment groups have included musicians, cheerleaders, teams and church groups. For the last two years the Reitz Theater group has been out promoting their fall musical with lots of energy and fun displays. I have been promised they will be back and better than ever! So look for them along the Greenway...they have already snagged their usual spot!
Don’t think that near-professional status is required to provide the support that all race participants appreciate. If you have a group that you think could make some noise, signs, or just play music and cheer for the athletes, have we got a job for you! Contact Heather Lejman at [email protected] to snag your spot. If you are participating in the race, think about who you would like to see along the way and give them a nudge!
Approximately 400 of our race participants each year train with our Team 13 training group. Team 13 was formed in 2004, the year of the first Evansville Half Marathon, as a way to help non-runners and walkers get ready for a half marathon, and train folks it did. But something even more remarkable happened. It became clear that Team 13 wasn't just about finishing miles. It was about forming a supportive community for levels of fitness. As the program grew through the years, the number of trainees and volunteers continued to grow. Iit became clear to the group that the community aspect of the training group was as important as the training program and advice. Below are some comments from current Team 13 members:
"Joining Jumpstart and Team 13 has become very important to the changes I am making in my life. I’m
feeling like a new person; a better person. You may be standing there with the weight of the world, but when that prayer is said before the run, you know it’s going to be a good run. You realize there are people that care, strangers who encourage, and friends that cheer you at the finish line." D'Ann Christian
"This year I'm training to run it. It's hard, but I want to try. I tell myself to "listen to your body." Listen to your heart over your head. Do what you can, but push yourself. Be you, but be the best you. Team 13 taught me that." Janet Daniels
"The Half Marathon is seven years from my first cancer diagnosis, the day before my 57th birthday, and exactly one year from my last cancer diagnosis. It will be a much needed personal triumph for me after the past seven years to cross that finish line. And yes, I will proudly stick that 13.1-mile sticker on my car window. " Ravonda Murphy
"One the best parts of Team 13 is the enthusiasm of the volunteers and long time members. My favorite part of training is when the runners and run/walkers are on their way back along with the volunteers and other friends I have made pass you and say ‘’good job’’. The feeling that I receive from those two words makes me feel great because even though I am not running, I am walking and giving it my all and can still participate in the half marathon and prove that I CAN DO THIS!" Cassie Smith
As always, proceeds from the Evansville Half Marathon go back into the local community by helping the YMCA impact the lives of children

and families with after-school care, character development, teen leadership opportunities and more. The Evansville Half Marathon was founded in order to bring a first-rate racing event to the community – promoting health and well-being for all while generating funds to further the mission of the YMCA of Southwestern Indiana. The Y believes that lasting personal and social change can only come about when people work together to invest in youth, healthy living and community.
The YMCA relies on the generosity of volunteers to make a difference in the community with events like the Evansville Half Marathon. Annually, the half marathon requires over 400 volunteers. For volunteer opportunities and race information, visit www.evansvillehalfmarathon.org

FINAL THOUGHTS
WHERE'S THE LOVE?
SHARE THE ROAD.During this crazy presidential election cycle, I can think of only one issue that draws a bigger line in the sand: Cyclist and Drivers Sharing the Road. Look at social media posts, or read comments on a news story about a vehicle/bicycle accident and you will see the anger. Each side is quick to raise their torches and pitchforks.
I am a driver AND I am a cyclist. Sharing the Road goes both ways. Drivers need to understand that cyclists have the right to use the road and cyclists need to know that they are required to follow the rules of the road.If everybody would read, understand and follow the advice on pages 17 and 18 of this guide, the roads would be a safer and happier place for all.
Over the last few years there seems to be a growing tension between cars and cyclist. Some of it is a gut feeling, an almost palpable sense of tension I can feel when out on a ride. Other times it takes a very literal form. I have been spit on, passed with only an inch to spare, had a bottle thrown at me, run off the road, and screamed at.
When reading reports, online comments, and speaking to non-cyclist drivers, I see some crazy reasons for disliking cyclists. However, there are two reoccurring reasons that I actually understand a drivers aggravation with. First, that cyclists can slow down drivers down and second that sometimes cyclists do not follow the rules of road. I understand the frustration, but will never understand the aggression.
Looking at those two commonly cited driver complaints, I think it is normal not to like being slowed down until you have a safe and legal place to pass a bike. I get it. One of my own pet peeves is the person in my checkout lane that waits all of their groceries to be wrung up, and then and only then, decides to dig around to find their checkbook, and then search for a pen (hopefully no coupons).
Does this bother me? YES. Does this slow me down? YES. Do I feel like this person should be more aware of those around them? YES! Do I spit on this person? Throw a bottle of jalapenos from my cart at them? Get in my car to clip their shopping cart in the lot and send them diving for cover? NO! Why not? That would be crazy.
I also under drivers’ concerns that cyclist may not always follow the rules of the road. This is often given as a reason for anger, hate and a demand that if they don’t follow the rules they need to get off the road. Unfortunately, neither do drivers. Spend five minutes at the corner of the Lloyd Expressway and Burkhardt watching cars. You will see drivers run red lights, not wearing seatbelts, texting, and speeding. The actual number of violations is crazy. However, besides one honking horn, nobody was up in arms enough to throwing things, spit out the window and run others off the road.
If we don’t assault the checkout lane slow poke, and we don’t endanger drivers that are not following rules of the road, then why do people do this to a cyclist? A driver is protected by a seat belt, multiple air bags and two tons of vehicle. On a bike, a plastic and foam helmet and a single layer of spandex are all that protects a cyclist.
It has to stop. Peoples’ lives are on the line. Let’s all make the tri-state a safer place to ride, and help drivers and cyclist by following the rules, respecting each other, and sharing the road.
