Governor Martinez Administration and NM Legislature,

964 people have signed a petition on Action Network telling you to Save New Mexico Corrections!.

Corrections Officers have one of the toughest jobs out there, and scientific studies back up

that fact._

New Mexico's State Corrections system is teetering on the edge of crisis. Correctionsemployees need decisive action NOW from the Governor and Legislature to foster a safer,well-run system. It's mission critical for our state government.

The NM Corrections system currently languishes under severe vacancy levels, with severalfacilities operating with 40% vacancy rates. A result, Corrections Officers are workingmaximum level (72) hours of mandatory overtime, weekly, at some facilities. This workschedule prevents officers from having adequate time for recovery, self care, or their families.

Resulting fatigue, stress, and break-down of well-being, commonly referred to as correctionsfatigue is a major factor increasing the dangers of accidents or incidents at work.

NM Corrections Officer pay remains uncompetitive and below the median income level forcorrections officers (nationally and regionally). Low pay is a major factor preventing thedepartment from recruiting and retaining men and women into the career. The domino effectscreated by heavy workloads and high vacancies are undermining the departments mission.

Through its Labor Management Committee, the New Mexico Corrections Department andAFSCME have recognize all these life and death realities and agreed that addressing themneed to be an urgent priority.

AFSCME strongly calls upon Governor Martinez, her administration, and the NM Legislatureto tackle the issue of corrections fatigue by working with the union, and one another todevelop and implement concrete strategies and solutions addressing the crisis.

choice for our government to increase the wages, it's a necessity. My husband is REQUIRED to work18 hour shifts, back to back sometimes, making for 6 hours of sleep time, that's if we didn't live 30minutes away. So in actuality he gets only 5 hours of sleep time which isn't enough for another 18hour shift. All because they can't find enough people to work in the detention center. This isunacceptable and dangerous! How can you expect them to protect themselves, their co workers, andthe public if they are barely able to drive to work, if they only got 4 hours of sleep because they choseto take a shower.

This work schedule prevents officers fromhaving adequate time for recovery, self care, or their families.

Resulting fatigue, stress, and break-down of well-being, commonly referred to as corrections fatigueis a major factor increasing the dangers of accidents or incidents at work.

NM Corrections Officer pay remains uncompetitive and below the median income level for correctionsofficers (nationally and regionally). Low pay is a major factor preventing the department fromrecruiting and retaining men and women into the career. The domino effects created by heavyworkloads and high vacancies are undermining the departments mission.

Through its Labor Management Committee, the New Mexico Corrections Department and AFSCMEhave recognize all these life and death realities and agreed that addressing them need to be anurgent priority.

We wonder why there is such a high turn over rate. You can work in the many call centers in the areaand get payed more than a correctional officer. How is that even logical. These men and women wentthrew extensive training to do the job they do their saleries should reflect that. My husband leaves towork at 130pm and most days works a double , so he will return home at 630 am. He then wakes upand does it again. That gives him 6 hours of sleep . Most of the officers are forced four days a week,so that means they will not see there families for four days. Please take time to consider the above.Samantha Padilla
