You won’t find Rocky Balboa or Mike Tyson pulling punches come Boxing Day. That’s because the holiday is a bit of an implied misnomer. Boxing Day, celebrated in Britain, New Zealand, Australia, and Canada among others, is really not about fighting -- or box-ing -- at all. The holiday’s name stems from gifts uncovered from boxes and is celebrated traditionally on Decem-ber 26 each year.

There are a few different theories of Boxing Day’s origins. Some say the

tradition stems from Roman times, when money to pay for athletic games was collected in boxes. In the ruins of Pompeii, boxes made out of earthenware with slits

in the top, full of coins, have been found. The Roman collecting boxes could be what inspired British monks and clergy to begin the tradition of opening alms boxes in churches for collecting donations during the Christ-mas season. The money and other donations were then distributed to the needy after the Christmas holiday. Yet another theory says that Boxing Day stems from members of the mer-chant class giving boxes containing food and fruit, clothing, and money to tradespeople and servants as a form of bonus or thank-you for a job well-done. Because the gifts were packed in boxes, the term Boxing Day was coined.

Another popular belief is that Box-ing Day began in England, in the middle of the nineteenth century, under Queen Victoria. Boxing day was a way for the upper class to give gifts of cash, or other goods, to those of the lower classes. This custom is linked to an older English tradition where, in exchange for ensuring their

wealthy landowners’ Christmases ran smoothly, their servants were allowed to take off Dec. 26 to visit their fami-lies. The employers gave each servant a box containing gifts and bonuses, and sometimes, leftover food.

As the years progressed, so did Box-ing Day. Before the Second World War, it was common for working people, such as milkmen and butchers, to travel round their delivery places, col-lecting their Christmas box or tips.

To this day, Boxing Day is generally a time to give back to the community or the less fortunate in the spirit of the holiday season. Banks and public

offices are closed in the celebrating countries, although retail stores are usually open for purchasing Boxing Day gifts.

The day takes on many different forms around the world. In Ireland, it is recognized as St. Stephen’s Day or the Day of the Wren. St. Stephen was a little known saint who achieved eter-nal fame by being the first Christian to be martyred for his faith. He’s also named in the Christmas song, Good King Wenceslas.

In South Africa, Boxing day was renamed Day of Goodwill in 1994. In the U.K., it is the traditional day that

pantomimes start to play, and often sports are played, including horse racing and football matches. Other traditions for the day after Christmas include a charity event called the Box-ing Day Dip, where people in fancy dress swim in the sea. There are sev-eral such events held around Europe, but the largest is organized by the Lions Club of Sunderland in England. Participants are expected to jump into the North Sea. The oldest such swim is Tenby Boxing Day Swim in Pembroke-shire, Wales, which started in 1970. In Canada, there is a similar tradition, although it is held on New Years Day, called the Polar Bear Swim.
